  1. Woo slides I believe yes. Utunen (sp?) maybe? Focht? Next year would be an overage year for him in junior if I’m not mistaken, perhaps they think it would serve him best to play pro hockey instead. I’m only throwing Try’s name out there because management has openly said they’re exploring the possibility of bringing him back and maybe Benning just grouped him in with young prospects to avoid saying “a few young prospects plus another sorta young guy whose prospect status is debatable” or something along those lines.
  2. More of a dark horse possibility than anything, especially considering Woo is already signed to a contract.
  3. Relatively speaking he’s young and by some definitions still a prospect. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was one of the five Jim was referring to.
  4. Tough to say that when neither one of em has ever done it.
  5. I believe we’d be stuck with his cap hit and salary prorated for the remainder of the season.
  6. Possible. I still think steroids are more widespread than failed drug tests would have you believe. I think the same is true in the NFL. I also think the change in approach to hitting is a significant factor in the increased home run output. Hitters are more inclined to sacrifice some average for more bombs.
  7. Who knows the league’s motivations behind it but yeah, I’d agree, the league probably knew and had done nothing about it. Not unheard of. Look at Ray Rice and the NFL. I could see it being that Houston is a big market that had been relatively unsuccessful for the last number of years so they figured it was for their own benefit to see the team succeed. It’s possible. I also don’t believe that the league has cracked down on steroids to the extent it appears to. Players are better at hiding it and know better than to juice themselves to the point of looking like bodybuilders and making it totally obvious. Steroids make the game better, integrity be damned.
  8. But the numbers still showed that they hit significantly better when they were proven to have cheated. Again, have you played? I’ll say it again- timing is huge. Timing is the difference between bombs and rolling over.
  9. Could also be that he realizes he’s done in North America if he doesn’t perform with Montreal. Not sure if that’s a huge incentive for him but it’s possible.
  10. Yeah, I’ve met him a couple times through friends. Saw him when he was in junior and the AHL but it’s probably been 5-6 years since then. He was a solid guy, very down to earth.
  11. Look a little deeper- specifically, look at the splits on Correa, Altuve, McCann, Reddick. I can’t remember if Bregman was quite as extreme. All of those guys were at least 100 points better at home. McCann was like a Mendoza hitter that year and on the road in playoffs but looked like Ted Williams at home. It’s possible it’s just coincidence but I don’t buy it. Have you played much? I ask because I just simply don’t agree with the way you’re underselling the value of timing for hitters. Watch high school or college hitters take a round of BP seeing straight fastballs vs a round with curveballs mixed in. Timing is huge, and that’s just with their fat 60 year old coach flipping in batting practice. The difference is even more substantial when we’re talking about hitters facing off against freaks like Aroldis Chapman.
  12. @kingofsurrey might bust a nut if we acquired Dillon. Can almost guarantee he has some story about a neighbour/coworker/bowling teammate who knows Dillon.
  13. Have you seen the home/road splits from that playoff run for their star players ?
  14. No big league pitchers hits his spot every time. They rely on a change of timing to keep batters off balance. There’s a reason why fastball/change up is the most effective combo in baseball- it disrupts timing.
  15. Disrupting timing is a massive part of pitching. If the pitchers lose that ability the hitters gain a major advantage. I don’t think you can trivialize it like that.
  16. City workers, ICBC (some of it), hydro, etc. Some people don’t have the option.
  17. Players like Blais, Maroon, Reaves, etc are far different from Tkachuk. Even a Tom Wilson, whose had his fair share of questionable or objectionable hits, isn’t in the same league. At least Wilson will answer the bell when he has to. I don’t have an issue with the hits Tkachuk laid per se (though they were definitely borderline at the least)- my issue is that if you’re gonna run around looking for stuff like this you better be ready to answer the bell when it’s time. Don’t write checks you’re not willing to cash, so to speak.
  18. I think part of it with baseball is this is a sport so entrenched in tradition that some fans even objected to safety netting being put up around the infield because it broke from the way things used to be. Bringing in video review was like asking baseball purists to donate vital organs. It’s not an easy sport to change and using technology to relay signs is seen as a major no no. Players tip signs from second base all the time. Pitchers and catchers don’t really like it but it’s part of the game. If you watch on tv you’ll see catchers throwing down a series of signs when there’s a runner on second rather than the one or two they’d put down if there wasn’t.
  19. I’d say it’s pretty fair. Marincin is a fringe NHL’er and should be happy he got a 1-way.
  20. I mean, it’s no worse than this year’s. Arguably easier with Canada out of it.
