  1. Can only retain on 3 contracts + they have term so not the best use of the retention spots. Bottom of the lineup players don't bring back much in a trade either - not a good use of owners' limited cash.
  2. not if they have negative value and their value won't go up on a team that is purposefully tanking.
  3. Little's contract is covered by insurance and will help Arizona reach the floor and allow them to spend less money. Dickinson/Poolman have to be paid.
  4. Fiala is the one ear-marked to be traded and they have prospects coming up - should allow them to keep the rest of their roster intact.
  5. Mini scouting report by Mike Kelly below highlighting his strengths. Top-40 in % of dump-in recoveries and top-25 in puck battles won.
  6. They had to take 30 players and not all were going to earn a roster spot - better to let someone walk then to have an unnecessary contract on the books. Vegas took 3 UFAs to be - Thorburn, Brickley and Berube directly walked to free agency a few days after being picked in expansion. Reinhart and Pulkinen never played for Vegas and took up 2 spots in the AHL. Grubauer was a Vezina finalist and has struggled this season. He was protected in expansion but Colorado failed to extend him and Seattle then signed him as a UFA. Doesn't feel like they did enough of a proper due diligence.
  7. Was talking only about contenders who want to win now and have to be rather mindful on how they spend the cap space and trade chips they have. With how his season has gone there's not a lot of time to bet that he will rebound. It just doesn't feel like he would be a logical TDL acquisition unless they are giving him away for cheap and the team won't mind if he ends up a scratch. I could see a non-playoff team or even contending teams in the off-season being interested - there's more time to see where he could fit and a full training camp. Vancouver would likely need to allow his camp to talk to the different interested teams so they can agree on a reasonable extension. Don't see teams willing to risk that 7.5M qualifying offer or mess up their cap structure by overpaying him.
  8. Arbitration eligible RFA with 1 year to free agency. Not seen as part of their core so no value to try and extend him. They are looking to build through the draft per Clark. Seattle only took players with little term in the expansion draft - they couldn't do like Vegas because GMs were more cautious so instead it's now that they are working towards acquiring draft picks.
  9. LTIR is hurting Tampa more than anything this season. If they didn't have Seabrook they could have been banking cap space and wouldn't have to be trading out players to fit everyone under the cap. At the TDL with 800K in banked cap space and just 1M of cap space a team can add a 5M player and remain cap compliant - not an option in LTIR as there's no banked cap space.
  10. Paul is a C - taken the 2nd most draws on Ottawa. Was apparently looking for around 3M and they couldn't bridge the gap.
  11. There's only 20% of the season left and he has struggled to produce at EV this season. It often takes some time for guys to settle in their new environment and there's just not a lot of time left. It's a risk to give up much for him and it's not like contenders have endless cap space. It's more useful to invest in someone that is more guaranteed to make an impact. Hagel for example has elements to his game that even when he isn't producing he brings value - not really the case with Boeser.
  12. Was never on the table. It was for Miller back in November. Fiala will in all likelihood be traded this summer - they don't have the cap space to sign him even if he only takes 5M.
  13. Feels like too big of a risk that he can't turn it around in the short time there is left before the playoffs. Other issue is his lack of speed with the top teams all so fast skating teams.
  14. What offence though? He ranks 259th in EV points this season or 209th if you look only at Fs. Why would any contender want to put him in their top-6 when he hasn't produced much of anything this season. He also doesn't bring the physicality of a bottom-6 player.
  15. Per Russo. The Wild gave permission to McBain's camp to talk to the different teams. Guerin made it clear that he wanted a list of several teams that he would be willing to sign with. Not just 1 team or he will make him wait till he reaches UFA - ie preventing him from burning a year now. McBain didn't want to sign with the Wild because he felt they were set at C for the foreseeable future and didn't want to end up C4.
  16. Brandon Pridham, their AGM, used to be senior director at the NHL's Central Registry. He helped draft the 2012 CBA and was heavily involved in creating the salary cap system.
