[PGT] Detroit Red Wings at Vancouver Canucks | Mar. 17, 2022
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Opponents are going to focus on Miller automatically - he's seen as the team's offensive engine just by his scoring pace. Can Horvat elevate his linemates as much as Pettersson can? At the end it's trying to find an equilibrium with a flawed roster - ie finding what gives the team the best chance to do well. A parallel to Minnesota. Fiala played with whoever is left: AHLers, guys who have since been waived, Ds forced to play at F etc. Just whoever can't fit on another line (- for the past couple of seasons before the Boldy call-up). It's because he can drive his line and force the other team to worry about them too. Kaprizov is needed for his scoring so they aren't going to hurt his line by putting him with lesser players and teams are automatically going to focus on his line - that would be the equivalent of the Miller line. As for the Ek line, it's their shutdown line for the toughest of matchups - that's always been Horvat's role. The 4th line is the 4th line. -
(Rumour) Giroux to FLA for Tippett, Samoskevich and draft pick
mll replied to RWJC's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Adrian Dater who falsely reported that Giroux had given Fletcher Colorado, St Louis and Minnesota as the teams he would consider. That was shot down in a hurry - Giroux had never even spoken to Fletcher at the time. Now Florida emerges as a favourite. -

Not sure that if you switch roles you would still come to that conclusion. Matchups are going to influence defensive results. Playing against the opponents' best lines that are expected to score every shift they are out on the ice, is going to impact chances against vs playing lines that hardly ever score or generate much. -

The guess is because he makes them better and it creates at least a decent line. Putting the weaker players together would make for too weak of a line which could be exploited. Miller and Horvat take on the tougher matchups so he can't as easily put them on those lines. Ahead of the Toronto game Boudreau was on the Kyper & Bourne podcast saying that he's mostly been playing him with 3rd liners and that he just makes them better - he cited Garland/Podkolzin but would think it's the same idea for playing him with whoever is left. -

Friedman in his 32 Thoughts: 27. Before extending Pavel Francouz, Colorado checked out the goalie market. Don’t imagine it was a coincidence Semyon Varlamov started against them last week in New York. Francouz’s extension appears to end that. The Avalanche aren’t done on or off the ice. They have inquired about Patrick Kane (don’t think so), Giroux and Copp (we will see), among others. Assistant GM Chris MacFarland not interviewing for openings in Anaheim or Chicago indicates there is an internal plan for him, too. 28. A couple of sources suggested they don’t believe Varlamov will go anywhere. We will see. Not that I’m expecting any info from GM Lou Lamoriello, but I’ve heard Cal Clutterbuck’s name quite a bit, too.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
mll replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Friedman in his 32 Thoughts on Vancouver: 13. One executive was talking about Vancouver and Winnipeg. He said he didn’t envy those teams making hockey decisions with the financial losses they’ve suffered from lack of crowds. They’ve worked their way into playoff contention, although the math isn’t on their side. In a lot of years, you might punt, but with everything that’s gone on the last two years, a playoff race and a postseason round is incredibly enticing. The Jets’ biggest decisions will likely come this summer, with Andrew Copp and Paul Stastny pressing in the moment. Copp’s got a lot of interest, in particular. Colorado for sure. Boston loves versatile forwards, and he is one. 14. The Canucks don’t have to rush (other than Motte) and seem prepared to wait until the summer unless either someone forces them to reconsider or a player they covet drops on their lap. One example would be Pittsburgh defenceman John Marino, but, as mentioned last weekend, it’s a difficult match. For one thing, the Penguins like their vibe and aren’t inclined to tinker too much with it. For another, with several tricky negotiations to come, they don’t want more. Los Angeles and Boston have checked in for some scoring, just not sure if it happens right now. Don’t see J.T. Miller going anywhere at this time; see that as a postseason conversation, including what it would take to re-sign him. -
Seravalli in explaining why teams could be targeting 2023 picks writes: https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/seravalli-nhl-teams-are-asking-for-2023-draft-picks-over-2022/ "But this trade deadline may be a bit different from the rest in that, so far, teams have asked for and prefer 2023 draft picks as compensation over picks from the upcoming 2022 Draft. They are seen as more valuable – and that includes later-round picks, not just first-round picks." and quotes Chris Peters: "I think there’s a general feeling that the first round in 2022 isn’t especially exceptional outside of the lottery range. There has been a perception for some time that the top of the 2023 Draft is much more plentiful than the top of 2022 in terms of true difference makers."

Cant see NYI retaining when they are looking to contend. Baugh doesn't think Colorado is doing anything on the goalie front.

Woodley seems to think so - a few months ago he was saying that he couldn't see Halak waiving because he has a young family.

The tweet in the OP says that it's Vancouver that is pursuing Liljegren.

Toronto doesn't have the cap space to add a 5M winger. Motte is apparently the player that interests them.

Drance was born and raised in Vancouver. Reporters are supposed to report only facts and remain neutral - being fan of the team they cover would disqualify them from being called reporters. -
[Rumour] Canucks interested in Brandon Scanlin
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Apparently 2x dozen teams called the Wild on him. The Wild were hoping to sign him but he feels blocked at the C spot he covets. 33pts (19 goals) in 24 games for Boston College. -
[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Garland has 14pts in 31 games since Boudreau took over. That's 9pts less than Pearson (32 games). Even Lammikko and Motte have 12pts over that stretch but they have a few more games than Garland. They might not feel like it's an efficient allocation of cap space. If Arizona is trading Chychrun it's because they don't believe they will be competitive any time soon. They are in a full tear down rebuild. So why would they want to add Boeser who is older and has a 7.5M qualifying offer when he won't even fit their competitive window + why would he even want to sign there? -
[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland

Teams would need to be granted permission to talk to Boeser and see if they can agree on a reasonable extension rather than qualify him at 7.5M. Garland has cost certainty. -
[Trade] Avalance trade Tyson Jost to Wild for Nico Sturm
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Sakic was considered the worst GM for quite a while and so many were asking for his firing along with Bednar's. He waited so long before trading Duchene and Colorado finished with not even 50pts / over 20pts less than the next team (Vancouver). It's only after the Duchene trade and them starting to win again that opinions started changing. He changed approach - he decided that if they were going to lose anyway, they might as well do it with their younger players and give them the opportunity to develop rather than bring in veteran players. He got rid of nearly half of their roster and they started to improve. -

Which model? Media always seems to be quoting public models as absolutes when they can be widely inaccurate with the sample size of just 1 game being so small. They only have shot location so they can't capture anything like pre-shot movements (ie a shot off a cross-seam pass is over 10x more dangerous than a shot taken from the same location but without the pass) or screens. -
[Trade] Avalance trade Tyson Jost to Wild for Nico Sturm
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Media all reporting that he was asking for more than 2M - he was an upcoming UFA. Guerin mentioned cost certainty in his presser. Also talked of both guys needing a change of scenery and believes that Jost has untapped offensive potential - he should get that opportunity at some point. Also says the trade was made to help the team now. Sturm has had trouble making the Wild lineup recently.
