[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
mll replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Lundell has more EV points per game than Miller. The difference in production is on the PP where Lundell doesn't get the same opportunities as Miller. Lundell is their top penalty killer. They are targeting Giroux per Friedman. The whole Philadephia brass were watching the Panthers AHL team the other day with Florida willing to move Tippett. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

From the MacIntyre post-game article: “He's a leader. He's our leader offensively, and he's our leader as a spokesperson. And I think a lot of the guys, you know, they follow him. I mean, he's our real star. Every team has one, and I would say he's our offensive star.” -
[Waivers] Olli Juolevi (claimed by Red Wings)

MacIntyre says that Benning over-ruled Brackett on the Juolevi pick. https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/canucks-mailbag-whats-going-gm-jim-benning-judd-brackett/ "But Juolevi was Benning’s choice back in 2016 because the GM wanted a defenceman and loved what he saw from the Finn at the world juniors. He could have chosen Mikhail Sergachev or Charlie McAvoy. Benning is believed to have gone with Brackett’s first-round recommendation ever since." -
[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He was asked about superstars and answered that they didn't have a bonafide superstar but Hughes was going to get there in time. He thinks Pettersson has the potential to become one and that's when he pointed out that he was playing him mostly with 3rd liners. -

Marek/Friedman believes that it's likely because he knows he won't be able to move the Ds as easily. It's more cap in / cap out trades on D and that wouldn't help to create cap space. -
You can't ignore that Boeser has a 7.5M QO and it's not like he's having a great season either.
-
Don't see either team willing to take Dickinson. Pittsburgh have so few years left with Crosby/Malkin and can't waste cap space on an inefficient contract. NJD are looking to take the next step and need to add players that bring something rather than just bodies. If Boeser gets anywhere close to his QO then they would be adding near 10M in salary when both players have combined for only 23 pts at EV so far this season. Boeser with 17 pts at EV would be tied 8th among Fs on NJD. They must really believe he can rebound.
-
If media is to be believed they don't seem interested in keeping Boeser though.

[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland

Boudreau seems to imply he's a 3rd liner. He was on Kyper & Bourne and talking about Pettersson said: 'I've been playing him with 3rd line guys for the most part. He makes them better. He's not playing with a Marner. He's playing with Höglander and Garland'. Garland has 13pts in 26 games under Boudreau - 0.5 pt/g playing 15:40. That contract doesn't feel all that efficient under Boudreau. -

Still a non factor to explain why they are struggling now vs earlier in the season - he wasn't playing when they took the division lead. -

Tuch didn't play for Vegas at all this season - he was on IR when they were piling up points to start the season. It's Stone that they are missing not Tuch. -
Feels like the better teams now have both skating and passing. There's also chemistry - knowing where to be before the puck even gets there. Skating speed has pretty much become a requirement. A few years ago, a team like Nashville could get away with sloppy passing because they were one of the fastest skating teams and could get to the puck 1st. That didn't last.

[Speculation] Canucks exploring Tyler Myers trade
mll replied to brian42's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Can't see Nashville adding a 6M D for their 3rd pairing. Their top-4 has been set all season. Poile also talks of being in a transition to get younger. Matt Roy is their 2nd most used D after Doughty - don't see why LA would have any interest. -
Giroux is a winger for Philadelphia and not a C (when everyone is healthy - Couturier had season ending surgery and Hayes is on IR). Was moved to wing several seasons ago now. He only takes draws just like Miller did for Pettersson on the Lotto line. Flyers apparently have Konecny on the trade block. Can't imagine they are looking to trade Provorov. They acquired Ellis to play with him but Ellis had a season ending injury 4 games into the season.
-
Should probably also consider passing skills. Minnesota under Boudreau had a lot of really slow skaters but they were a fast team. Boudreau in Minnesota once said (via Russo on twitter): "Tape to tape passes create speed and if you can pass tape to tape, it has the illusion that you’re skating a lot faster bc I’ve never seen a guy skate faster than a puck" Could also maybe make a difference between acceleration and speed - runway is not the same in all situations. Getting to the puck 1st on a face-off is more about the 1st 3 steps than speed.

Don't think that's the plan. They are trying to understand the trade value of the different players they have. It will then allow them to see which pieces they can move and decide who they should move. Some contracts might not be movable. Some might only be possible in cap in / cap out type of deal and others might not bring back the return they hope. Wouldn't be all that surprised if they try and extend Miller. An extension carries a risk but there's also the risk that the assets they get in return never pan out or their timeline is too far out. It's not like they have Demko, Hughes and Pettersson under contract indefinitely - only 4 years for Demko after this season, 5 for Hughes and 3 (2 under contract) for Pettersson. Rutherford spoke about the importance of development and how he likes to over-rippen players in the AHL. He gave the example of Blueger who could have played in the NHL 2 years before they finally brought him up. He was drafted in 2012 and went the NCAA route, signed his ELC in March 2016 and was brought up in the last half of the 2018/19 season due to injuries. A player drafted recently could be a number of years away from making the team under Rutherford. Adding to the prospect pool will improve the structure on how they develop and add players to the NHL team in the long run, but it doesn't sound like it's going to be prospects fuelling the roster in the near future. He also said that he wanted to create cap space because if there are opportunities they can then take advantage whether in a trade or UFA. Says that Demko masks a lot of flaws and that they are holes in the roster and highlighted their lack of footspeed. Sounds like a roster composition issue but not a maturity issue - the players on the team are ready to compete today (other than Podkolzin and Höglander who could use some AHL time).

[Rumour] Predators shopping Filip Forsberg

Doesn't feel realistic though. Poolman's contract was mocked by the analytics community and NJD rely on analytics to make their decision - ownership even fired Shero in part because he didn't involve that department in his decisions. Does Fitzgerald even have interest in Boeser? NJD is a fast skating team + why would they want to deal with 7.5M QO. All the arguments you give for not keeping Boeser are the same for the team taking him on board. -

With UFAs too. Nashville agreed with Turris on an extension before they pulled the trigger on the 3-way trade with Colorado/Ottawa. -

Which team is going to want to give up assets for him and then risk having him sign his QO. -

or they simply don't qualify him and still try and negotiate a deal with him. He can't be thinking that a team is going to pay him 7.5M as a UFA. -

If he signs his QO, it will also be a 7.5M QO a year later.
