  1. Didn't sound like it was about a better return but about whether he's even available. Per Seravalli teams have moved on because the sense is that Vancouver isn't committed to moving Miller. He even thinks they could keep Miller for next season. Talked of how they could move on from Boeser which helps the objective of opening cap space while keeping Miller who brings so much more and has a lower cap hit. In his interview Rutherford talks of how they hope to keep enough good players that they can continue to compete. He also points out that offence is carried by only a handful of players. He was asked about his philosophy on signing players in their 30s. Rutherford insisted that he's not speaking of anyone in particular but in general. He's not necessarily against it. He gave the example of a 6 year deal and says you have to be aware of your competitive window and realise that maybe the player won't have the same role the final 2 years but there are example of players who can play well into their 30s. Talks of how you also have to look at how players take care of themselves and keep themselves in shape. Says it all factors in in making that kind of decision.
  2. He's an upcoming UFA - ie not an Eichel situation where team/player couldn't agree on the best course of action.
  3. He's 2 years away to UFA but if the team takes him to arbitration he is the one that gets to decide whether he wants a 1-year deal or a 2-year deal.
  4. It's Adrian Dater that tweeted those 3 destinations. Russo denied it - he has Fletcher on speed dial. LeBrun also denied it.
  5. Not in Minnesota. He wouldn't crack their top-9 as it's currently built. All wingers more impactful or productive than Boeser. Guerin also mocked the idea that he would target local players - fanbase is far too smart to think it matters. They want to win. Russo says ownership couldn't care less and is not even from Minnesota. It's been known that they have 13M to 15M in dead cap for the 3 coming seasons. They need very cheap ELC players.
  6. 800k for Pitlick given the days left to the season. You really believe Benning/ownership preferred paying more to get Toffoli then simply waiving Schaller to the AHL and one of their extras.
  7. Seravalli says teams have moved on to their B and C options because they feel that Vancouver is torn on what to do with Miller.
  8. They are in a full tear down to the earth rebuild. Ownership looks also unwilling to spend. Doesn't make sense for them. Boeser is too old and expensive + they are looking for draft picks. Armstrong made it very clear in his interview to LeBrun. Which player is going to want to sign with them to play in that mini arena. Would expect them to target LTIR contracts to hit the floor - ones that are insured and where the cost is picked up primarily by insurance. Ferland's contract is apparently not insured.
  9. So you think that the cost to get Toffoli from LA was inflated because they sent Schaller and his 1.9M the other way?
  10. Doubt it mattered much at all here. They are trying to sell their assets to help towards their rebuild. Can't imagine they would turn down a deal because they have to take back some cash on an expiring UFA. They actually even got to save cash. Either they took back Pitlick and his pro-rated 2.2M (so about 800K in actual cash) or have the deal fall apart with Calgary then not having the cap space to bring in Toffoli. Toffoli is owed about 1.9M for the rest of the season - they still save over 1M in actual cash for this season alone.
  11. It does in building a perennial contender. That's why there are concerns with the D-corps as it's built. A sound process/reliable D-corps and an excellent goalie is more likely to lead to replicable and sustainable success. Results are more volatile if they have a poor process and have to over-rely on goaltending. Puts them also an injury away of everything falling apart.
  12. Just looking at numbers, Nashville could use an upgrade on Rittich as backup. They have the cap space to absorb Halak's bonus this season. Wouldn't even ask Nashville to give up anything - just swap backups.
  13. They would need to clear some 11M in cap space to absorb his 1.5M bonus this season. The 1st step is to get out of LTIR. Teams can only bank cap space if their full roster including IR/LTIR players fit under 81.5M. They have 5.4M worth of players on LTIR. They are 127 days into a 200 day season. At say day 150 (which is a bit earlier than the TDL) there would be 25% of the season left. To bank 1.5M by season's end they need to be 6M under the cap as 6M x 25% = 1.5M in end of season cap space.
  14. And no team has had their goalies outperform their environment more often than the Canucks according to tracking technology. Spencer Martin even faced the 2nd highest expected goals against this season vs Edmonton. The defence was so porous where they allowed 28 shots from the slot (which was the most faced by any goalie in any game at that point in the season). McDavid also had 16 zone entries with possession - most of any player in any game at that point too.
  15. If a team is a contender they are unlikely to want his bonus either. Cap space is far too valuable when a team is right in their contending window. Looking at CapFriendly there only 2 teams in a playoff spot that could fully absorb his bonus this season - Nashville and maybe NYR*. For all the others it would carve into their cap space of next season. * For NYR it might be less evident because they are looking to add at the deadline. They have also exceeded the bonus cushion by nearly 2M and need to absorb that penalty this season, or it would carry over and they will be tight with the increase to Fox and Zibanejad.
  16. Don't think it mattered. Montreal is not going to make the playoffs. By moving Toffoli they save money already - he is paid over 5M this season. Pitlick was just a contract to balance out the cap.
  17. Have a hard time seeing Anaheim hanging on. Verbeek made it clear that he has no intention of losing their UFAs for nothing - Manson, Lindholm, Rakell could all be moved by the TDL if they don't agree on an extension by then. Doesn't feel likely that they'll bring all 3 back given their rebuild.
  18. Friedman in his 32 Thoughts: 19. There are teams doing their due diligence on Vitali Kravtsov, making sure the forward will return to the NHL next season. The answer is yes.
  19. Those 2 execs likely offered their assessment independently from each other. They probably don't even know who the other exec was.
  20. JR's advice to Guerin was make fair deals or you won't be making many.
