  1. Dhaliwal says they are torn about what to do with Miller. Stan Smyl also this week said that cap space is a big issue and that they have to deal with that if they want to move forward.
  2. It was one of the changes in the CBA MOU ahead of the bubbles. The award is only if they go through the arbitration process where both sides have a hearing where they present their arguments to a neutral arbitrator. Before that hearing they are free to negotiate a deal. The qualifying offer doesn't come into play when they agree on a new deal. They can structure the contract as they wish.
  3. Conditional picks upon re-signing are no longer permitted. The arbitration award cannot be less than 85% of Boeser's last salary - 6.375M. He gets to decide whether he wants a 1 or 2 year award. There is a deadline to take a player to arbitration.
  4. So many Miller threads - so posting the same info also here. From Friedman's 32 Thoughts: 1. My sense is that part of Vancouver’s thought process includes the possibility of re-signing JT Miller, not trading him. I’m not saying that’s the likely outcome, but, at the very least, they’ve investigated the idea and what it would take. That’s one reason other names — like Conor Garland’s — are out there. President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford wants to create room, and will explore almost all options to do it. I do think at least one team’s made a run at Miller (my guess is the Rangers), but obviously not to the point where the Canucks said yes. --- Another Sportsnet article has MacIntyre saying this on Miller: "I don't think they're in any hurry to trade JT Miller at all," Sportsnet's Iain MacIntyre said on Monday night's post-game show. "There's a lot of teams interested in him, and if they get an offer that's too good to pass up, then they'll probably trade JT Miller this spring. But I'm not sure they're going to get that offer. With him in particular, I would still probably be more surprised, not shocked, but more surprised than not if they trade him this season. I think that's a deal they could do in the summer, at the start of next season or even during next season."
  5. Petry was playing behind Weber. Without Weber he became the de-facto top D. They didn't have reliable goaltending without Price and a lot of their players struggled this season. Petry has also openly criticised Ducharme's system. Friedman in his 32 Thoughts believes Montreal could find a trade partner in the off-season. 6. A few teams indicated they see Jeff Petry more likely as an off-season deal as opposed to this deadline, although those predictions certainly could backfire. One thing to remember: as ugly as this season’s been for him — and the Canadiens — his underlying numbers last year were very good. And that hasn’t gone unnoticed.
  6. In part to create cap space but Garland should bring back a decent return. Smyl again echoed Rutherford this week saying that cap space is a big issue and that they need to fix that to be able to move forward. Boudreau has a puck mover at the top of his wish list. When Rutherford replaced Johnston with Sullivan he blamed himself for not bringing in enough puck movers. Pittsburgh didn't allow many goals against but felt that their lack of mobility limited their offence. He traded for Daley and Schultz who wasn't known for his defensive play and they went on to win the Cup that season.
  7. Friedman in his 32 Thoughts. Thinks the Canucks are also looking into the possibility of re-signing Miller. 1. 8. There has yet to be a sign and trade in the salary cap era. Boeser is not worth 7M on a long term deal either. The stats you are quoting are highly influenced by goaltending. CBJ doesn't have Demko in net.
  9. Depends on Pettersson. Aside from his scoring Miller also brings a sheltering effect. Without Miller there's no more buffer for Pettersson and he becomes the de-facto top offensive C - more pressure on himself to produce while also facing tougher matchups.
  10. Is King coaching the PP? I thought Boudreau took that over.
  11. CBJ named Boone Jenner their captain and signed him to an extension that starts this coming season. Davidson says he's part of their fabric and represents the culture they are trying to build. It seems unlikely that they would want to move such a role model. Jenner also shelters their younger players. If they remove him then that role goes to players who might not be ready for it, which could hurt their development and confidence. CBJ uses Sportlogiq for their tracking technology - they've even organised an analytics conference with them as sponsors. Sportsnet using that same technology concluded that Poolman was one of the worse contracts handed out last summer. Boeser has a 7.5M qualifying offer and no known ties to Columbus - he could just sign his qualifying offer like Laine did. They are also in a rebuild and would probably be the ones trying to acquire more draft picks rather than give them up.
  12. That's what I wrote. Ideally they find a better C for that Fiala-Boldy line. Russo wonders if they won't look at Pavelski or Giroux and doesn't think that Miller would work for the TDL. Guerin might not want to pay much so maybe just a defensively responsible C that leaves the puck handling to Fiala/Boldy. They don't need a C for the Kaprizov line though. Eichel completely lost his cool last time he played against Ek.
  13. Hartman didn't start at C1 but climbed his way up. Of course Kaprizov is carrying his line - that's why he is being paid 9M but that line with Hartman has excelled. They don't want someone else to take the puck away from Kaprizov who wants the puck all the time. That's why Hartman also works so well there. He lets Kaprizov and Zuccarello do their thing and it's working. Breaking up one of the best lines in the league is highly unlikely. Evason says they don't have line numbers. So switch Ek and Fiala' lines if you prefer. Ek is their shutdown C. He plays on that GREEF line who is so dominant for them - they have yet to allow a 5v5 goal which is exactly what that line should be doing. It's a line built for the playoffs. They take on the toughest matchups and frustrate players like no tomorrow because they just play so hard and physical. Also one of the best lines in the league - there's a clip explaining why somewhere from NHL Network using tracking technology. Fiala plays on an offensive line. They could use a C for that line. Fiala has more EV points than Miller while being pretty much on an island all season till they've recalled Boldy (7 games as a line). Wonder what he could have done with some talent earlier. Teams don't really break up lines that are dominant but try and fix the lines that aren't. Their top line and the GREEF line have excelled. Fiala and Boldy are clicking but could use a better C than Gaudreau. Guerin has repeated a few times now that it's no longer like in the past and you don't need a C to drive a line anymore. Says you need a line driver but it doesn't have to be a C - gives Fiala as example who does it from the wing. He goes in detail about that when he was guest on one of Russo's "Straight from the source" podcast.
  14. They would need to clear about 14M in cap space at the TDL to be able to absorb his 1.5M bonus this season. Can't bank cap space in LTIR. They are 9.1M in LTIR but have 3.6M in cap space so they could move Hamonic to IR. Would still leave 5.5M in cap space to clear to get out of LTIR. Then they have to bank cap space. With 20% of the season left they need 7.5M at the TDL to bank 1.5M by season's end.
  15. Players on LTIR count against the cap but the team can exceed the cap to fit them in. Their regular roster will still be under 81.5M but the contract of the player on LTIR can go beyond the cap. When a team has a player that has to go on LTIR they have to try and maximise their LTIR relief. It sets a new notional salary cap for the regular roster. Teams have to try and get as close as possible to 81.5M (without exceeding it) so that they don't lose any cap space for having to use LTIR. Vancouver weren't able to maximise their LTIR relief this season and are operating at a new notional cap hit of 81.2M for their regular roster - ie they lost 300K in cap space right off the bat compared to a team that is not in LTIR. When a team is under 81.5M they can bank the daily difference for future use. That's not possible in LTIR because they are exceeding 81.5M by using LTIR. Bonuses come out of banked cap space at the end of the season - if it's insufficient the difference gets carried over to the next season. As there's no banked cap space in LTIR the bonuses are entirely carried over into next season.
  16. He's a UFA in a season - would be 29 on a new deal and could also be too expensive and not even want to stay there.
  17. They are actually negotiating a new deal with Goligoski. Was agreed when they signed him last summer but they didn't want to average the contract because of the buyouts so it's expected to be somewhere between 2-3M per Russo. Fiala is likely going to be too expensive to fit under their cap. They didn't sign Greenway to trade him. That GREEF line is key for them and has yet to allow a 5v5 goal against. It's one of the hardest line to play against. Minnesota already has one of the very best top lines in the NHL with Hartman playing C1. There's really no chance that they break up that top line up or the GREEF line. The Wild are 3rd in goals for per game. Fiala has more EV points than Miller while playing with considerably lesser linemates - Freddy Gaudreau at C and on the opposite wing mostly Rask or whoever else didn't fit on another line. Gaudreau was a 13th F /4th liner for Pittsburgh and has pretty much been tied to Fiala all season. Boldy was promoted 9 games ago and is ppg. Guerin just confirmed that he's there to stay. Him and Fiala have clicked immediately and have scored some key goals for them over that stretch. Ideally they upgrade on Freddy Gaudreau to play C between Fiala and Boldy.
  18. Giroux could be had for ~2M at 75% retained by using a 3rd team. Last season the cost was a 4th or 5th round pick to use an intermediary. Harder to do with Miller because he has that extra year. Smyl says cap space is a big issue and they need to take care of that so they can move forward. Not sure they'd want to retain on Miller. There are only 3 retention spots available and some contracts might not be movable without a retention. Didn't see Miller to AVS either. Seravalli says Carolina are interested in Miller.
  19. Boeser for Fiala is not likely. For cap reasons - the Wild are in a far deeper mess than Vancouver with 13M-15M in dead cap for the coming 3 seasons. They likely won't even be able to retain Fiala whose qualifying offer is much lower. Fiala has also been the more productive player while playing with significantly worse linemates. Guerin doesn't believe in targeting local players - was asked about it. Fan favourites have been from all over the world and he has actually shipped local players out. Russo also shot down the idea that it would matter.
  20. Which is what was noted when Friedman says he wasn't sure they could make the cap work. Giroux could be had for 2M by using a 3rd team. The NHL investigates all LTIR cases - they've apparently tightened the process. Garland was the asset offered up - not Miller. Trading Gompher for a winger creates a hole at C and he's one of their top PKers. Garland also has 4 years left to his deal when they have Kadri up at the end of the season + they also have MacKinnon a year later. One of the objectives listed by Rutherford is to create cap space.
  21. Keeping their GREEF line intact - Russo tweeted that it was a big reason for the signing. He also noted that they haven't allowed a 5v5 goal against this season.
  22. Russo doesn't think their interest in Miller is serious for this TDL. Wild likely won't have the cap space to extend Fiala so he would have probably been their principal in a Miller trade. Fiala and Boldy have found instant chemistry since Boldy got brought up and with all the lines going so well he doesn't think they want to remove from their active roster. He thinks they want to find a C to play between them. Thinks they could target Pavelski or Giroud. Minnesota are going to have 13-15M in dead cap starting next season (an 8M increase from this season followed by another 2M the season after). They need cheap players on ELCs and Rossi, Boldy, Addison as well as Wallstedt are considered to be their untouchables.
