They don't have the cap space to add for this season without removing a player from their roster. They most certainly aren't trading Kadri before the playoffs. If they had cap space they wouldn't be allowed to use roster emergency exception - this allows to bring up someone without him counting against the cap.

Colorado has no cap space - they can't add without removing from their current roster. They just had to recall Dylan Sykura on emergency roster exception where his cap hit doesn't count against the cap. As for next season Burakovsky is probably not back but the way Kadri is playing that space freed up could well go entirely to his cap hit if they find a way to extend him (+ a cheap replacement for Burakovsky). Kadri is 4th in points per game in the entire league with 59 in 40 games and plays a more critical position than wing.

Colorado have Kadri who will be UFA after this season. They are very unlikely to put money in wing when they have a far more important position to pay. MacKinnon is also up a season after. Colorado entering a serious cap crunch. Friedman thinks their target is Giroux for this TDL but isn’t sure they can even make it work as they are completely cap strapped - cost a 4th or 5th round pick to use a 3rd team in previous seasons so cap could be only 2M and that’s still a hard fit. ... LA went into a rebuild to get prospects and aren’t even serious contenders. They need to plan for their post-Doughty so wouldn’t expect them to part with D-prospects just yet. .... Edmonton not willing to give up a 2nd when they were losing games and now they've added Kane. They probably think they’ll outscore their goalie issues and doubt they want that 1.5M bonus on their books next season. Vancouver has a back-to-back this week. The Wild have the buyouts for Parise/Suter that increase by 8M next season and again by 2M a season later. They will have 13 to 15M on their books for the coming 3 seasons. Boeser is not having a good season and his lack of speed is apparent. Can’t see the Wild having interest in a winger and they don’t even have the cap space anyway.

[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland

Still young and cost controlled for another 4 seasons after this one. Gives some talent for Hughes / Hischier to work with and allows them to give their young prospects more development time. -

That was their conclusion to give him a match penalty - they had the choice between a minor or a match penalty. From the rule book: Rule 48 – Illegal Check to the Head 48.2 Minor Penalty – For violation of this rule, a minor penalty shall be assessed. 48.3 Major Penalty – There is no provision for a major penalty for this rule. 48.4 Game Misconduct Penalty – There is no provision for a game misconduct for this rule. 48.5 Match Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent with an illegal check to the head. If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline can be applied by the Commissioner at his discretion. -

[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland

Friedman just said that Rutherford is talking to teams about multiple forwards including possibly Garland (but says not Pettersson or Horvat) and that now that the front office is in place he thinks that Rutherford is about to get going in trying to reshape the Canucks. On his podcast, Friedman said that teams have told him that Rutherford let them know that there are things they are considering doing. Rutherford in his pressers has also implied that Vancouver are not built to be contenders just yet - talks of how he wants to get younger, faster and have a team that can come together in a couple of years. -
[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland

He's not part of the discussions Rutherford is having with other teams and neither is Pettersson but Garland is per Friedman. Surely teams have called on Horvat and/or Pettersson which implies that Rutherford is not interested in trading either Horvat or Pettersson. -

Vancouver was pegged as a bubble team that was poorly constructed. Rutherford looks to be validating that take - the team isn't constructed to win and have a depleted prospect pool. Sounds like he's considering selling off some of their better players to try and fix the issues. If he's comsidering trading a 25 year old Garland signed to a reasonable deal it suggests that he doesn't think they can win now and/or that he can get what he is looking for with some of those older veteran contracts - some might even be unmovable. Given where things look to be heading I would think he would have preferred having them miss the playoffs with Roussel, Beagle, LouiE coming off the books (combined 12M) and Guenther in the system, then also missing the playoffs but having a 31 year old OEL with an NMC for another 5 seasons at 7.2M despite having Garland. Garland is a 0.65 ppg player in Vancouver and it doesn't feel like he'll be able to bring back the equivalent of 9th overall. That high draft pick was used in part to also off-load cap in the deal. They are walking a fine line. After this season Demko has 4 years left, Hughes 5, Pettersson 2+1 to UFA and Horvat is 1 year to UFA. A player already drafted would have been a few seasons into his development. Podkolzin is in his draft+3 - ie over 2 years of development have gone by and although there's promise he's not making much of an impact just yet. Draft today and it could take several years for the player to start making a difference and those key players near free agency. -

Both teams are in a rebuild. CBJ and Buffalo themselves are looking for more picks and prospects. -

Not up to the NHL anymore. It’s going to arbitration unless there’s a settlement with the NHLPA. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
mll replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Covers Pittsburgh who are believed to also be interested. They just lost Zucker indefinitely following core muscle surgery. Marek compares the Chychrun ask to the Burns trade - 1st round pick + Charlie Coyle who was picked 28th overall the previous draft + Devon Setoguchi who was 24 at the time of the trade. Also doesn't see Florida parting with Lundell or Anaheim with McTavish to get Chychrun. -
By point percentage Anaheim are not in a playoff position and have tailed off after a hot start. Since the Christmas break they are 5-7-2 or 0.429. Only Edmonton and Seattle have a worse record over that stretch in the division. Manson, Rakell and Lindholm will be UFAs and if they can't reach a deal by the TDL would expect them to be traded.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
mll replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Russo doesn't think the Wild are seriously in on Miller - the cost listed also just doesn't make any sense for them. Boldy-Rossi are players they are building around with 15M in dead cap for the next 3 seasons. They weren't willing to give that up for Eichel when they thought they needed a C1 but now their top line has been one of the very best in the NHL so there's no pressure to go find a C1 anymore. He thinks they'd like to upgrade at C3 to play between Boldy-Fiala who have clicked instantly. Russo thinks they are looking at guys like Giroux or Pavelski. -

Coyotes lose vote for new arena - future unclear
mll replied to mll's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Only a guess but there are rules that the NCAA have to adhere to to retain their amateur status and an overlap with a pro team is likely an issue. The Coyotes will also need to make changes to meet NHL standards - would give their team an advantage over other amateur teams if they accept pro funding. -

Friedman on his podcast says that it's basically a done deal. He was told that they have to make changes to the arena to meet NHL standards set in the CBA notably to the visitors' dressing room and weight room and that it could reduce capacity to 3200. The NHLPA is not happy but there might not be anything they can do. -

The contract was for 3M but Benning convinced him to have it spread over 2 seasons by making the conditions easily attainable - it was a cap trick so he could have more to spend this season. How can they now go and tell him that his 3M contract negotiated in good faith will only bring him in half.

[Rumour] Tyler Motte drawing interest
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
The qualifying offer will likely be seen as an issue. Laine didn't have a great season and signed his. Unless they can agree on a deal beforehand then he might just be considered a rental for the post-season. He's 0.5 ppg this season.
