[GDT] Around the NHL | December (05-11) 2021

500th win for Fleury - only 3rd goalie to reach that mark with Brodeur and Roy. -
Juolevi hasn't played a single game for the Panthers yet. He was on IR from the start of the season. Went for a conditioning stint to the AHL for 3 games and has only been activated off IR earlier this week. He was a healthy scratch for the lone game played since he came off IR.

(Proposal) Acquiring Jake Middleton (SJ) and Trent Fredric
mll replied to Odd.'s topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Don't see why SJS does it though. They are much better off just buying him out. The cap hit is lower for next season. They won't be stuck with Pearson and get to keep Middleton. -

The Sharks are in a re-tool to get younger. They can't move most of their veteran contracts so they are looking to add youth around them. Don't see them in the slightest interested in Pearson. DeBrusk asked for a trade but Boston isn't looking to just give him away. Haula hasn't quite worked out so he's more likely on the block than Frederic who looks to have been playing C3 the past few games. Can't see Boston giving up 2 players picked in the 1st round for that package. -

Never going to happen. Makes both team significantly worse. The Wild are also top of the West and building around Ek and Kaprizov. -

Sullivan won 2 Cups. Reaves was acquired after their back-to-back. Pittburgh won on speed and skill. -

He was there in Chicago. Tallon was also investigated in Florida for racial and religious comments - couldn't be substantiated. The league doesn't disclose everything - they want to preserve their brand. -

The Penguins didn't have much push back. That's why Rutherford went out and traded for Reaves. Sullivan barely played him though (6:45 per game) so after not even a full season they traded him at the TDL with a 1st + 3rd to acquire Brassard. -

The league apparently doesn't want him around an NHL team. Dhaliwal says Vancouver started talking to him but the league stepped in. Sekeres when his name came up said his sources tell him that there's no chance the league would allow for Tallon to be hired. -
Vancouver also purposefully tanking? Remove Demko and they would probably give Montreal a run for 2nd to last. Losing Price and Weber created a huge hole. Jake Allen had to take time off a few times when in St Louis because he struggled with the pressure of being the starter.

Their 1st Cup was under Shero - Crosby was in his 4th season and Malkin in his 3rd. -

It's McPhee himself that decided to promote McCrimmon to GM. He was worried about losing him with so many teams interested in him. -

McPhee is president of hockey ops for Vegas. Don't see why he would want to take a lesser role in Vancouver when he has a winning team in Vegas. -
IR is minimum 7 days. So Hamonic will miss at least the next 3 games.

Ek is as untouchable as they come. Him and Kaprizov are their building blocks. They need Ek far more than Pettersson as they have a Pettersson equivalent in Kaprizov. Minnesota is very much into analytics and tracking technology. Sportsnet using tracking technology graded Poolman's contract rather poorly.

Tulsky was hired by Ron Francis after Rutherford left Carolina. He is currently AGM with Carolina and many believe he is ear-marked to be their next GM. Doubt Dundon or Waddell would allow him to be interviewed. -

Can be discussed whenever. There are restrictions when it can be filed with central registry though. If players are on a 1 year deal - 6 months ahead ie 1 January. If players are on a multi-year deal - a year ahead. -
The Wild obviously don't make the trade given their winning record. Doesn't make any kind of sense to upset their team just yet. It would also make their team worse as Horvat is not really needed and it would create a hole in their top-4. Guerin doesn't believe in rushing prospects so Rathbone would go straight to the AHL. Minnesota has already found their centre. Their top-2 lines look set in stone with how dominant they have been. Guerin bought out Suter in part so he could protect Dumba in expansion and then gave him the A - doubt he is looking to trade him just yet. With 13-15M in dead cap for the coming 3 seasons they will need prospects like Boldy to replace roster players who they can no longer afford. The Wild are still in a rebuild and Guerin has made it clear that he is not trading any of their key prospects. Don't see how Dumba helps Vancouver - the Canucks don't have a D like Suter or Brodin to cover for his defensive lapses. Rask is more of an F13 on the Wild. He mostly gets in the lineup when others struggle or are injured/ill. He doesn't have much footspeed. Boudreau used Horvat to shutdown the Bergeron line - don't see Rask able to fill that role. Boudreau also barely played him. Dumba struggles to defend. Feels like that trade would make Vancouver worse.

The back-to-back Cups were before he acquired Reaves. Reaves was acquired in summer 2017 and never made it to the playoffs with the Penguins. Rutherford traded him that same season at the 2018 TDL to acquire Brassard (gave up Reaves + 1st round pick who became K'Andre Miller + 3rd round pick). Feels like an unnecessary trade but Rutherford hated how Crosby got hit in the head by Niskanen during their previous playoffs and decided to add toughness. Sullivan hardly played Reaves (not even 7 minutes per game) so they traded him before the season was even up. -

Rutherford had an article in The Players' Tribune a few years' back where he covered some strong moments and trades he made for their 2016 Cup but also gave some insight on his philosophy in building a winner. Excerpt: https://www.theplayerstribune.com/articles/jim-rutherford-what-you-dont-know-about-being-a-gm As a GM, you’re always asking yourself how you can build a winner. Yes, you absolutely need guys with speed, talent and hockey IQs. But you also need guys with strong character, because a hockey season will throw all kinds of things at you that you could never see coming in July. Ultimately, as a GM, you’re constantly trying to solve this puzzle: How can I build a team that can win a Stanley Cup? Not make the playoffs. Not compete. Win the thing. If not this year, then in five years? It’s a long game, not a short one. In order to solve the puzzle, you have to be paying attention to the landscape of the league as a whole. This is very important. Both of my Stanley Cup teams came together after some pretty big shifts in the way the game was being played. With the 2006 Hurricanes, we knew that the game was going to be officiated differently after the lockout. The league was cracking down on the clutch-and-grab style that defined the ’90s, so we went after players who would excel in the new environment. The league always moves in cycles. And there’s not just one way to win. When I came to Pittsburgh in 2014, the trends had been flip-flopping back and forth. L.A. won with size and physicality. Chicago won with skill and discipline. (Personally, the Blackhawks are my favorite team to watch and learn from.) Then the Kings won again … size again. Then Chicago won again … skill again. Once a team wins with a certain philosophy, the rest of the league moves to either copy or counter it. The answer isn’t to follow along with the trends. The answer is to figure out the best identity for your team. -

Hunt was pretty much a 3rd pairing regular under Boudreau in Minnesota. Not that there were better options - Pateryn was injured for most of that season and the other D on the roster was Seeler.
