[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
mll replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He actually would still have 1 year left to UFA. UFA is earliest between age 27 and 7 pro-years. He turns 25 this season and has 5 pro-seasons (it's minimum 40 games) so 2 seasons left. The team can avoid the qualifying offer by filing for team elected arbitration. Gives them then time to continue to try and negotiate a deal till the hearing. The award if the arbitration goes through can't be less than 85% of his last season - so 6.375M. -

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks

That roster is not realistic and contradicts Guerin. He's regularly interviewed and has been consistent in his message. Guerin insists that he won't rush prospects. He says he wants them to become difference makers and not just guys who play in the NHL. He explains that the best place to develop is in the AHL where they will get the minutes they need. They claimed Pitlick off waivers to make sure they wouldn't be giving one of their open spots to a prospect. They already have an understanding with Goligoski to bring him back at a lower cap hit per Russo. He was signed because it's short term deal and gives time for their prospects to continue to develop. Pitlick plays wing not C. Rask is regularly a healthy scratch and won't be brought back. EriksonEk is a checker. They really wanted to make him work with Kaprizov but it didn't click. He's certainly not a playmaker. Gaudreau is already 28 and has never been a linenup regular before now. He's ideally a 4th liner but is getting far more minutes and a bigger role than he should because of their lack of C. They are interested in Miller because he is a C which they need and is on a good contract and would bridge the gap to Rossi. Being on a short term deal helps them. Fiala is a winger and not a C + as RFA he would be looking for a long term deal. Guerin traded Kunin drafted 15th overall in 2016 because they wanted that high 2nd round pick towards their rebuild. They also moved Donato for a pick. Last season he loaded up on UFAs on the hope of trading them at the deadline for additional picks but the pandemic put a damper into that + the Wild were solidly in a playoff spot. The Bjugstad trade was for a conditional 7th round pick. They also didn't have to give up the pick because the conditions were not met. He re-signed for cheap as depth player and has been a healthy scratch at times. Bjugstad's agent had to convince Guerin to make the trade. That's the only trade where they were possibly going to lose a pick. Otherwise it has either been hockey trades or players traded to get additional picks/swapped for better picks. His mandate is to build a perennial elite Cup contending team. Ownership is more than fed up of only making the playoffs and has agreed to a proper rebuild. That's why prospects won't be rushed. They still want to be competitive - having a winning culture is part of building a perennial contender. Guerin was particularly shocked when he came over and felt there was a country club atmosphere where they had players who were there for personal reasons vs for hockey reasons. -

Their buyouts for Parise/Suter increase by 8M next season to reach 12.75M. They will have considerably less cap space next season and the 2 after that where it goes up again by another 2 - ie 10M more than this season. That's why they are willing to move Fiala and/or Greenway in a hockey trade for a top-6 C. It's not worth investing on wing when they have winger prospects that can replace them and their need is a top-6C. The Wild are in a rebuild - that's in part why they believe they will be able to weather those ugly buyout cap hits for the 3 coming seasons. They expect to be injecting prospects into their lineup. Minnesota is the state that has the most NHLers - they are bound to have a few on the team. Doesn't mean they are specifically targeting local players. He couldn't care less where guys are from. Fans favourites have been from all over the world. Guerin had a previous relationship with Goligoski from Pittsburgh. The expectation is that they will be able to get him on a more favourable deal next season when they will be in a significant cap crunch. Taking Bjugstad was doing a favour to Rutherford - they got him for a conditional 7th which they didn't have to give up because the conditions weren't met. His agent had to lobby Guerin to agree to the trade. He's back because he's cheap and their cap space is very limited. Boeser has little chance to succeed in Minnesota. They don't have any playmaking C to set him up and it's not like he creates his own chances consistently. Fiala at least can drive his own line. He creates a lot of chances but is just completely snake bitten right now. Friedman on his 32 Thoughts podcast assured that Guerin is vey patient and that he's not moving Fiala unless it makes his hockey team better. Dumba was on the trade block for ages with Guerin even confirming it. They never got what they wanted (a top-6 C) so he never traded him and even gave him the "A". -

Doubt it. They don't have the cap space + Guerin mocks the idea that he would target players because they are local. -

He hates the Leafs - his quote. His team growing up was Detroit. -
[Report] Canadiens fire GM Marc Bergevin
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
Bergevin doesn’t draft. Most GMs don’t - they feel they would just interfere in the process. Armstrong, Yzerman, Guerin have all spoken against getting involved. Trevor Timmins has been Bergevin’s long time head of amateur scouting and when promoted to AGM a few years ago kept the responsibility of overseeing their amateur scouting. -

Hansen explains that coaching is minimal on a PK - either you have players who know how to kill penalties or you don’t. He blames it 100% on personnel even saying that the guys they have aren’t PKers. He points out that they are missing a right handed C for draws and don’t have shot blocking Ds. Benning blames it on systems. Could Hansen and Green be right and it’s a roster issue rather than about systems. -

Instead of Schmidt 5.9M + Virtanen 2.8M + Holtby 4.3M Tanev + Toffoli and even Stecher + backup goalie Not Markstrom as they had Demko and they couldn’t protect both in expansion. -

They didn’t even play 10 minutes together at 5v5. Toffoli was playing with Pettersson. -
[Report] Canadiens fire GM Marc Bergevin
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
Hello to all, Saying farewell to an organization like the Montreal Canadiens is not an easy thing to do. I want to leave the organization in the same way I came in: with a lot of pride. If there is one word that comes to mind right now, it is "thanks." Thanks to everyone who, in one way or another, has helped make this dream come true. Thanks to Geoff for his dedication, support and trust throughout this journey. Thanks to the players, the coaches, the management team, the scouts and all the hockey and administrative staff I worked with. Without you, I would never have been able to realize my dream. Thanks to the media for their professionalism and coverage. I would never have thought, in my life, that I would be getting more visibility than the Premier. Especially... Thanks to the fans for their support, passion, and loyalty to the Montreal Canadiens. The last years have been high in both emotions and learnings. You have witnessed my journey leading the organization. You won't be surprised to hear me say it has not been a long, quiet river, and at times, it felt like we were living in a TV show. Despite the challenges, the organization I led with passion always fought back. For me, each experience, good or bad, made me a better leader. It was in 2012 that I accepted, with pride, the challenge of leading the Montreal Canadiens towards a 25th Stanley Cup. Even if I always said that the goal was to make the playoffs and that everything was possible once there, the real objective was always to bring the Cup to Montreal. I know you would have liked to hear me say that at each golf tournament at the start of the season, but this thought was behind every decision I made since my first day at the head of this organization. Last year allowed us to get closer to the ultimate objective but we fell short of hoisting the Holy Grail. Despite this, I am proud of what we achieved as an organization. I sincerely hope this objective will be achieved sooner than later. Montreal is the city where I took my first skating strides and it's also the city where I learned to lead the NHL's winningest franchise. This city and this organization will always have a special place in my heart. That said, and despite the fact that this journey is coming to an end, I am proud of the legacy I'm leaving within the organization. The current team is much better than the results show, and I am convinced that my successors will be able to rise to the challenge. It is with my head high and with unforgettable memories that I am leaving my role as General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens. I wish this organization and my successor all the best for the future. Thanks again, Marc -

They can't. Only ELCs can be sent to the ECHL without their prior consent. -

(Proposal) Retool to balance out the roster
mll replied to KillerWhales33's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Craig Button says Barzal is a good player with flashes of brilliance while Pettersson is a brilliant player. Don’t see NYI being at all interested in Poolman. He would just make their defensive woes even worse. Trotz is very much into analytics (credits their use for winning a Cup) and Lamoriello even used them to target their goalie when in Toronto. Sportsnet using tracking technology pointed out that he was bottom tiers in d-zone turnover rates which is something that Trotz would likely be mindful of. Drance just polled a few executives and pro-scouts and they have him with negative trade value. NYI are missing what Leddy brought - they are looking for a left PMD to replace him per Staples. -
(Proposal) Retool to balance out the roster

Poile once said the most important skill in his mind is speed and Boeser really has little of that. He can score goals though so maybe a bit of an adjusted deal could have them bite. Myers instead of Fabbro. Not sure about the other pieces though. Kunin and Trenin are depth players but are still helping them win games. Burroughs has no trade value. Boeser is struggling and Nashville finally has found some balance after some difficult times. Poile says he worries about the room in a trade. Nashville can’t make a trade that hurts their competitiveness or players will stop buying in and they are just getting everyone to believe in what the are doing. They are in a competitive rebuild as Poile puts it and part was fixing culture where he felt players weren’t all in and now they are. The roster isn’t good enough to contend yet but they are playing for each other. -
Don’t see CBJ being interested. Boeser is struggling and doesn’t have Laine’s upside. There were reason’s why things didn’t go well last season. CBJ had no playmakers last season and traded Atkinson for Voracek who is a pass 1st F with the key objective to help Laine. They look to be clicking. Things didn’t always look to go smoothly with Tortorella but he has been replaced with Larssen this season. Laine is currently injured. He just lost his father a week ago so don’t think CBJ are going to worry if he is not quite on his game when he comes back.

Yes. Most cases are settled before arbitration. Has to be settled before the hearing though - before they could still agree on a deal before the ruling but that's not the case anymore.
-
The tweet was from 2019.
-
They can avoid qualifying him by taking him to arbitration before issuing his qualifying offer. The ruling can't be less than 85% of his QO so minimum 6.375M. He would still be RFA on a 1 year deal. Arbitration can damage relationships but it's an option.

Since when does the league take political sides? The group building the arena belongs to an owner that is strongly in favour of Quebec's independence and was even active politically before he withdrew for personal reasons. Marek and Friedman were just talking about how the NHL doesn't like to do their business in the open and prefer discretion. When a national network negotiates a deal they look at the territories covered. They want presence in the largest market - Carolina, Florida and Phoenix are huge. Take them out and there are penalties that are going to impact the revenue of the league. The league looks at revenue generation overall.

Horvat doesn't address any need. They don't need Glass to play C2 any time soon and have him in Milwaukee developing. Granlund is their C2 and on a 4 year deal. He is a PPG - 19pts in 19 games while playing a solid two-way game. Hynes prefers him at C than wing. He's his go-to player - does it all and is trusted in all situations. They also have a re-surrected Duchene who is on wing but can play C - he's ppg this season. He's finally playing how they expected him to. Far more to the inside than the perimetre game he was playing the past season. Johansen plays C1 (although his line often plays less than the Granlund line). He's played with a rotating cast of linemates - mostly their younger players with Forsberg injured (been back only this week) and Duchene playing mostly with Granlund. He's primarily a playmaker and helps set up their goal scorers - the production isn't consistently there as those young wingers are still figuring out how to score. Horvat is not a set up C. Johansen earns 8M - they are better off having him in an important role than diminish it. He's also done a good job at it this season and has been fairly productive with 16pts in 20 games. Hynes had a few players adjust their approach and it's now coming together. Don't see how it would make them better to part with Sissons - he's their top PKer and is on a reasonable deal for a C3. Horvat doesn't even kill penalties regularly. C is not really an area of need for the next few years. They are missing high end goal scorers and are trying to develop them as part of their rebuild. Poile calls it a competitive rebuild - they want to get younger and bring in prospects but still want to compete. It's a work in progress and they probably need to draft a few more of those high end players. Ekholm was signed this off-season - his deal starts only next year. Poile listed signing him as a priority. Ekholm plays a key mentoring role to those young Ds and is also a reliable defender. Myers is poor in his own end and doesn't have the same solid fundamentals that Ekholm has. They've actually been mostly average defensively and Saros has been winning games for them. They need their young Ds to continue to develop.
