[Signing] Wild sign Kirill Kaprizov
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
This is ridiculous. The NHL has those teams burn a year and by not allowing them to play they can't get a P1 visa from the US government to come over and join the team as they aren't playing. Affects Sorokin with NYI too. Tourist visa on his own means 14 days of strict quarantine where he can't even leave his hotel room for meals and has to have everything delivered. -
Don't think Nashville would be interested. Watson seems to be a bit of the odd man out under Hynes and they need some meanness - not many players can make Chara buckle. Trenin is also younger, cheaper and can play C. Virtanen has arbitration rights and the award could be too rich for Nashville and without the option to walk away. It also limits their flexibility until the arbitration process is over. Poile always argues about Nashville dollars to get players at a lower number - favourable taxation and low cost of living. I am not sure that they would want to bring someone like Virtanen over either. Poile says that whenever he makes a deal he worries about character and whether the player will fit into their group. Fiala and Virtanen were drafted the same year. They felt that Fiala was too young for their group and that Granlund was a better fit maturity wise. The Predators are looking to win a Cup and the earlier the better. I think they'll prefer to keep their homegrown talent and find someone that fits their age group better.

Can the Canucks afford to let Chris Tanev walk away?
mll replied to Patel Bure's topic in Canucks Talk
The Canucks are below average defensively. Retaining Tanev and keeping the rest of the D-corps intact is probably insufficient of a change. Edler missed 10 games but the Ds were otherwise healthy enough to play. Only Hughes was a rookie and he was the best D. Mike Kelly previewed the upcoming series using Sportlogiq's tracking technology and says 'the Canucks are one of the worse defensive teams in the league'. He calls Markstrom elite and thinks he should have be on every GMs ballot for the Vezina. System is probably also part of it but Markstrom has been masking how bad the team is defensively. Even ignoring advanced stats, numbers show that the Canucks aren't particularly strong at 5v5 and rely on the PP to win games. Some 80% of the game is played at 5v5 and some 2/3rds of the goals were scored at that strength in the league this season. The 24 teams of the extended season have allowed on average 136 goals at 5v5. The Canucks have allowed 145 - only 5 of the 24 teams have allowed more. Only 6 of the 24 teams have a negative differential at 5v5 but only 3 have a worse one than the Canucks (significantly worse though). Production wise the Canucks are average at 5v5. The Wild even outscored them by 15 goals at 5v5 this season. There's somewhat of an over-reliance on the PP and Markstrom. Adding Toffoli to improve 5v5 scoring does make some sense. Games are won by goal differential so somewhat the choice between scoring more or allowing less to win games. Not sure it should just be Tanev or Toffoli. Other teams will have to make cap decisions too so should also depend on who becomes available. -
Tryamkin is a RFA and has different rules than college players who are going to sign their 1st NHL contracts. Podkolzin can join as soon as his KHL club releases him regardless of when that is because he will be signing an ELC. Tryamkin is a RFA - different rules.

There is no quarantine before entering the hubs. That's why it's so important that players and anyone joining the bubble follow protocol of phase 3 and don't bring that virus inside the hub. A player could decide to break protocol and see friends his last night of phase 3, catch it and enter the bubble positive. The Penguins' 9 are isolating because they had a dinner party and it turned out the wife of a player was positive. It's now 7 days before entering the bubble of phase 4. From the protocol: Players have to "stay at home as much as possible and avoid unnecessary interactions with non-family members. It is strongly recommended that family members limit their exposure to non-family members during this pre- travel 7-day period to the extent possible, and to stay home as much as possible to reduce potential exposure of Club individuals."

Phase 3 is the start of training camp which was Monday. Sweeney did say some international players had to complete quarantine requirements and could be late joining phase 3. Sounds like they went skating while completing quarantine requirements. They practiced separately from the main group on Wednesday but have been kept out since. Pastrnak's agent said they are in quarantine now because they had contact with someone that tested positive.

[Proposal] Cap Dumps and Finding Team Fits
mll replied to Phil_314's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Detroit is in the middle of a rebuild. They need young assets that are going to fit their upcoming core not more veterans - they have plenty of those. I don't see what's in it for Detroit - it doesn't help their rebuild. They were also perfectly happy to tank to get a better pick. Friedman just this week was wondering if Detroit was even going to spend money. They are expected to still be bad next year. Owners are set to lose considerable money so why would they want to increase their losses when Detroit seems to want to play their kids so they can develop. Sakic was saying that he by far prefers losing while kids are developing than losing with veterans who don't do much for their future. I would think that teams have noticed how that change of approach has helped Colorado. The worry initially was the players in Detroit would be resigned to losing but it's apparently not the case. Yzerman even confirmed that Blashill was coming back. I don't think that it's the kind of deal Detroit wants to do - it costs money to ownership, takes away ice time from their kids and doesn't even help with their rebuild. Eriksson also has that extra year which would limit their flexibility to retain or add better players. There are several teams that are going to be squeezed by the cap - would think that teams will have the opportunity to get some good players at a bargain and it will make it harder to dump cap. Teams also know that the Canucks are looking to clear cap and they might try and exploit the situation. LA already has veterans of their own. Similar argument really. Not sure the Canucks 4th line is impressing anyone really. More and more teams are using advanced stats to help their decision process. -
[Signing] Tryamkin Re-signs in KHL for 1 Year
mll replied to Odjick29willkillyou's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
There's the signing deadline for RFAs to consider - it's about a quarter into the season. It was 1 December in previous years but will obviously have to be adjusted. Past that date he won't be able to play in the season. There's also cap space and roster spots to consider. Not sure the Canucks will keep cap room open to add him mid-season - unless someone is unexpectedly on LTIR there probably wouldn't be room to add a 2M contract mid-season. It feels more likely that he could be added for 2021/22 because of the RFA signing deadline and also cap space. They would also need a roster spot open - the RFA signing deadline is close to 3 months before the TDL where roster limits are lifted. -
[Report] Canucks to part ways with Judd Bracket
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
It was also the process - in his twitter message Brackett writes that an agreement could not be reached on the level of input on staff personnel and the process. Benning's quote also indicates that it's far more about say on who to draft than personnel. -
Apparently a lot of players did not want to return but the financial impact is so dramatic that they felt they had no choice. Given the numbers and consequence it feels like it would take a lot for the league to not return. Several players already left their families at home for phase 3. This is from the same Friedman article (posted in the NHL/NHLPA ratify CBA extension thread): The two sides also had to navigate Paragraph 17 of the Standard Players’ Contract, which details what happens when, “because of any condition arising from a state of war or other cause beyond the control of the League or of the Club, it shall be deemed advisable by the League or the Club to suspend or cease or reduce operations.” The pandemic sure qualifies, and the clause allows for a player’s salary to be reduced, or in an extreme scenario (cessation) cancelled. “(The NHL) never threatened us with this,” one player said, before laughing a little. “But we knew it was there.” Another said the possibility was raised that if a return to play wasn’t attempted, the financial damage would be so great that the NHL wouldn’t resume until a vaccine existed. Whatever the case, it was one of the final issues to be settled, with the league agreeing to limit its use of this clause through the end of the 2020-21 season. [...]

[Signing] Wild sign Kirill Kaprizov

So they burn a year and might not even be able to bring them over. Sorokin and Romanov in the same situation. -
Thomas Drance tweeted in response to someone upset about his observations on Virtanen: "I'm one of eight public observers at the game. Fans want to know who played well and who played badly. Jake had as tough a scrimmage as you can have - even getting yelled at by his teammates - my job is to find a way to let fans know that fairly."
-
Training camp in the KHL is starting now and they have a salary cap in place. No guarantee that his team would have a spot for him later in the season. He is at risk of being without a contract depending on how the Canucks' off-season plays out. The belief is that it's going to be much harder to move unwanted contracts because of the flat cap. Also some teams might no longer be willing to spend to the cap until there's more normalcy and they can have fans back in the stands. Owners are going to lose considerable money next year and they might not want to compound their losses and decide to impose an internal cap. It's unclear where every team stands and what was a possible trade a few months ago might not be available anymore. We don't know yet how teams are approaching their spending for next season. Not every owner is necessarily cash rich vs asset rich. Some unexpected players could become available and teams probably want to retain some flexibility. It's perfectly reasonable for him to return back for another season. He needs some guarantee which the Canucks where not in position to offer him right now. His side is a bit upset because they wanted to sign but will try again next year. From the Canucks point of view it also makes sense. They don't know yet if they can move the contracts they want to move. Tryamkin would be a nice add but he was not a priority over Toffoli, Markstrom and even Tanev. They first need to figure out how much cap they have available.

Per Dhaliwal he turned down a deal earlier this year from his KHL team because he wanted to come to Vancouver. Now he had to take a 15-20% pay-cut as that deal was no longer on the table. He also says that Diamond talked to AGM Gear who told him the Canucks are not giving out 1-way deals at the moment. He wonders if it's not a directive from ownership who doesn't want to end up paying an NHL salary in the AHL. You can listen to Dhaliwal here: https://c1.futuripost.com/ckstam/playlist/dhaliwal-tryamkin-wanted-to-return-was-saying-all-the-right-things-but-the-canucks-couldnt-do-a-1-way-deal-25623.html Btw the highest salary in the KHL this season is Shipachyov at circa 1.75M. The 25th highest salary is half that amount (~ 875K).
-
That's why I haven't. It's a quarter into the season and you start counting from the start date on. The CBA MOU says tentative date is 1 December - it's not even an absolute date. The KHL looks to be starting on time though. Training camp is already under way.

[Signing] Tryamkin Re-signs in KHL for 1 Year
mll replied to Odjick29willkillyou's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Saw that Kalnins tweet a few weeks ago before the signings. There was another report saying CSKA wouldn't allow them to leave before the season is completed. Wild were looking into it for Kaprisov and it was not an option - he's a winger and not a goalie though. There was also concern that he wouldn't be released even if they had an agreement given that there's no transfer agreement between both leagues. The NHL agents they have have also been prevented from doing business in the KHL. Do you know of any names who left mid-season voluntarily with an out-clause especially local players. I know they've kicked out some international players and have let some players move on as soon as the team was eliminated instead of waiting until end of April. Wonder if they still give them out now that they've introduced a salary cap. Tryamkin's agent says they didn't even really start discussions and cited salary cap issues as the reason. He even said that the Canucks were probably a bit relieved that he extended in the KHL - one less issue to worry about. They are a bit disappointed by the outcome as Tryamkin really wanted to come over but understand the cap challenges. They'll try next year. Dhaliwal says his agent talked to AGM Gear and he was told that they couldn't do a 1-way deal right now. He wonders if that comes from ownership not wanting to pay an NHL salary in the AHL. He apparently had a nice offer from his KHL team earlier this year but declined because he really wanted to come over. He now had to take a 15-20% pay cut on his new deal according to Dhaliwal. Says Diamond was really not happy - he didn't sound particularly happy either in his interview. Tryamkin's agent Todd Diamond: https://post.futurimedia.com/ckstam/playlist/listen-25607.html Dhaliwal: https://c1.futuripost.com/ckstam/playlist/dhaliwal-tryamkin-wanted-to-return-was-saying-all-the-right-things-but-the-canucks-couldnt-do-a-1-way-deal-25623.html -
From Friedman: But… there’s two weeks before we get there. Two teams train in Florida, one in Arizona, one in Texas. The numbers in those states are staggering. The vulnerability is much greater in Stage 3. There were some conversations about moving out of those states, but one objection came from players feeling they were already being asked to spend enough time away from their families.

Fitzgerald was saying before the pause that NJD has 3 pillars to build around - Hughes, Hischier and Blackwood. If they move him they would then still be looking for that C1 which is just so hard to find. You even think that Hughes could work his way to a top centre so why wouldn't NJD? They have holes all over their lineup with them saying D is a weakness. If they are trading Severson their D gets worse and puts them even further away from being competitive, and they would no longer have a C1 going forward anymore. Why not just use the time they need to build their Ds to let Hughes develop. It was just his 1st season. NJD would certainly be interested in Boeser but not at the expense of Hughes. If they move Hughes they need to bring in a C that will likely cost more than an ELC player and it doesn't help their C1 issue once their window opens up. They have picks that they are willing to move for that kind of trade - would create cap space for the Canucks. Fitzgerald talked of using picks to make similar trades to the ones they did to bring in Palmieri and Johansson - that was pre-pandemic. Drance has been saying for a while that Virtanen's analytics are poor and in particular his defensive game. NJD is giving a bigger role to their analytics department. It was even believed that they were one of the reasons Shero lost his job as he wasn't integrating them in decisions. Don't see NJD being interested in Virtanen. They are also looking for players that can be role models for some of their younger players like Hughes and that's probably not Virtanen either.

[Signing] Tryamkin Re-signs in KHL for 1 Year
mll replied to Odjick29willkillyou's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He wanted to come over per his agent. Canucks didn't have cap space clarity to sign him at this point and it was too big of a risk for him to wait for them to sort things out. -
[Signing] Tryamkin Re-signs in KHL for 1 Year
mll replied to Odjick29willkillyou's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He's not expansion eligible because he only has 2 pro-seasons and not because he isn't signed. Only pro time while signed to a NHL contract count. Seattle can select unsigned RFAs. Nichushkin was in a similar situation as Tryamkin spending time in the KHL. Like Tryamkin he was qualified when he left Dallas for the KHL so that Dallas could retain his rights. He was not under contract by Dallas but had 3 pro-years and had to be protected in expansion. -
No. It's a CBA clause. Normally it's 1 December for a start in October - about 25% into the season. There's never been any exception.

[Signing] Tryamkin Re-signs in KHL for 1 Year
mll replied to Odjick29willkillyou's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Doubt the KHL would do out-clauses. NHL agents have been blacklisted from doing business there as they don't want talent getting away. Kaprisov and Sorokin were told they had to play the full year. There's a salary cap now too and players had to take paycuts. The highest earner is Shipachyov at 1.75M. Andrighetto would have been 1.3M but he seems to have signed in Zurich. -
He can't though. Not if the NHL starts on time - scheduled tentatively for 1 December. He will be past the RFA signing deadline and will have to wait for 2021/22 to play in Vancouver. The NHL season would have to start sometime in February for him to have a chance to make the RFA signing deadline - it's about a quarter into the season.
