  1. Home is Portland, Oregon.
  2. Toews - top 4 offensive LD. Leads their Ds in average PP ice time. Doesn't play on the PK. Boeser seems to get quite a few assists where he shoots on net and someone gets the rebound. That's not really being a playmaker.
  3. There might be no takers for those players. Cap space is scarce and draft picks don't guarantee drafting an NHLer. Some teams might also be forced to operate on an internal budget to limit the losses. Revenue is going to be significantly lower than the actual cap. Owners are going to take a large portion of the losses initially including a portion of the players' share with escrow capped. They will be made whole over time but some might have liquidity issues next season. I wonder how challenging it was to get Boeser under contract. He apparently turned down a long term deal. He also has a 7.5M qualifying offer. Maybe the Canucks aren't that confident that they will be able to fit him under their cap long term and that his demands could exceed what they are willing to pay him. Pettersson improves the numbers of everyone he plays with. Boeser adds playing with him but does he hold the same value playing with Horvat or Gaudette.
  4. Not to the Wild. He's not a C1. He probably has even less value to them because they have no elite playmakers to set him up. He'd be wasted on their team and likely couldn't make the same impact given their set up. Pieces need to fit to have a good team. He wouldn't fit on their team the way it's built right now. In a few years once they find playmakers.
  5. The Wild are looking for a C1 in return for Dumba not another winger. They also have no use for Sutter - he was already offered up to them earlier this year and Guerin declined per Russo. Russo: "... but as much as Guerin would love not to trade Brodin or Dumba, if either player could get the Wild closer to a No. 1 center or bring back a No. 2 center and other assets, he'd seriously consider it." Friedman on Guerin: "I don't get the sense he's inclined to do anything with either (Dumba or Brodin), unless it involves an elite centre, or maybe a No. 2 centre, providing that includes something extra like a couple of first-rounders or something along those lines."
  6. Canucks had injuries all through this season and didn't bother calling him up past that early season recall - they preferred playing Eriksson in their top-6. Now everyone is healthy going into camp (save maybe Leivo) - chances he plays is close to nil with the Canucks already having to scratch players they had as roster regulars.
  7. Both want to play. Luke Kunin also has type I diabetes. He excludes sitting out and can't wait to get started. There is a provision though that says that players with pre-existing medical conditions that puts them at risk of developing a serious illness from covid could be prevented from participating. The determination will be made by team doctors in consultation with the league's chief medical officer.
  8. 2020/21 was never going to start in September whether they finish this season or not. Some owners don't even want next season to start without fans in the stands. It's now scheduled for 1 December per the CBA MOU. They projected revenue for this season at 4.8 billion. They are talking of losses in billions and don't even think revenue will reach 3.3 billion next season. Players share revenue 50-50 with owners. Their salaries are already around 65% of revenue so they have a considerable sum to pay back to achieve that 50-50 split. Playing those games allows to reduce some of the losses. Instead of escrow at 35% it could be closer to circa 28%. The NHL has to negotiate a new US TV deal. Going dark would likely hurt their negotiations. Several leagues are resuming and it's important for the NHL to not lose market shares. Also some of the local TV deal foresee penalties if the season is incomplete and teams don't reach a certain number of games. McKenzie painted a pretty dire financial situation for the league. It's not just about players/owners. Teams are furloughing staff or even laying them off. Closing the league has an impact on employment, tax income for government programs and unemployment. Some players think it's going to be one of the toughest to win. Rosters nearly all fully healthy and no momentum built. Everyone starts from the same point.
  9. Dhaliwal insists that everything Sekeres said yesterday was bang on. He said he talked to people around the hockey world and they confirmed it.
  10. My understanding is that they will only produce the feed but not the commentary which should still be local announcers. For example the Wild will have local announcers commenting the game remotely off that Sportsnet feed. They won't be present on site. In normal times each broadcast produces their own feed off the different cameras available where they select what they want to show their viewers. For these games there will be only one feed produced as broadcasters of the teams playing won't be on site.
  11. I don't think Boeser would be heading to Minnesota. Every media outlet has reported that the Wild are looking for a C1 in return for breaking up a D-corps Guerin calls elite. Russo: "... but as much as Guerin would love not to trade Brodin or Dumba, if either player could get the Wild closer to a No. 1 center or bring back a No. 2 center and other assets, he'd seriously consider it." Friedman on Guerin: "I don't get the sense he's inclined to do anything with either (Dumba or Brodin), unless it involves an elite centre, or maybe a No. 2 centre, providing that includes something extra like a couple of first-rounders or something along those lines." They don't have a gifted playmaker like Pettersson to set Boeser up so he would likely be wasted in Minnesota. They also don't have tonnes of speed which would limit Boeser even more. It's not really a good fit. They would take Boeser but I don't think the Wild would trade a key asset for him. He's a luxury rather than a need and he might not even do all that well there. Their need is a C1 and it doesn't make much sense to trade Dumba for a winger. Staal is up next year and he showed his age this season. Parise and Zuccarello have NMCs so it's not like they can just erase them from their roster. They would just be putting themselves in cap trouble while having an inefficient lineup and not filled their biggest need. Dumba is also not the best fit for Vancouver given how shaky they have been defensively. He is a risk taker and does well in Minnesota because he played with Suter and now Brodin who can cover for him. Adding Dumba would likely put a further strain on Markstrom.
  12. His agent excluded that Baertschi would go to Europe. Baertschi calls Portland home. Regular buyouts are unlimited. There will be no compliance buyouts. Salary retention in a trade is limited to 3 contracts.
  13. Pettersson and Hughes have hit their performance bonuses. It pays them a combined 1.7M (850K each). Ever since the Canucks used LTIR on Ferland their end of season cap space has been stuck on 30'474.- per CapFriendly. Those 30K is the amount they have to pay their bonuses and anything in excess gets carried over to next season as an overage. Gaudette and MacEwen might have some games played bonuses that will also count towards the bonus overage. Canucks will have about 16M (maybe a couple 100K more) with Ferland healthy and Baertschi buried. The new CBA allows to spread the overage over the next 2 seasons in equal parts. Instead of having 1.7M as an overage in 2020/21, the Canucks could elect to have 850K in 2020/21 + the remaining 850K in 2021/22 (that will come in addition to the overage from 2020/21). Pettersson/Hughes will still be on their ELCs next season and will certainly again hit 1.7M combined. Pettersson also has an additional 2M bonus. He needs to finish top-10 in the league in either goals, assists, points or points per game - hitting on 1 target qualifies for the full 2M.
  14. No. There is no guarantee that he can get a contract. The way he spoke earlier this break was pretty clear that he is not looking to terminate his contract. It's up to the Canucks to find a trade partner, buy him out or send him to Utica for another year - there's no escrow in the AHL.
  15. Here's NYI's cap situation: https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/islanders They have about 10M with RFAs Barzal, Pulock and Toews to re-sign.
  16. Understandable that he opts out. Why be confined to a bubble and away from his family with close to no chance to play. The Canucks already have too many Fs on their main roster. I'd be very surprised if he goes to Europe - his agent excluded that idea. His life is in North America. He doesn't even return to Switzerland in the off-season anymore. Doubt he'd walk away from what the Canucks owe him either now that he has a young son.
  17. This is the Wild's roster. Teams are allowed 30 skaters and an unlimited number of goalies at camp. They will only be allowed to bring 31 players in the bubble. Pateryn is out indefinitely with an upper body injury. It looks like the rest of their roster is accounted for. Goalie Kakhonen will have an equal chance to be the Wild's starter per both Evason and Guerin. Luke Kunin has type I diabetes. He has very intention to play but there is a clause that says players with pre-existing medical conditions who are at risk of developing a significant sickness from covid-19 could be prevented from participating. McKenzie explained that they have to undergo more in-depth testing before being cleared to play.
  18. I would target more reliable players in their own zone rather than Barrie, Dumba (not that the Wild would trade him for a winger) but there was apparently interest in Barrie. Don't think he's going to get his ask of last year. He hasn't had the best of seasons and the cap is staying flat.
  19. They re-seed after each rounds. The by-teams are playing a round robin to determine their 1 to 4 seeding in the playoffs. In case of a tie they will use point percentage of the regular season. The Canucks will be seeded 5, 6 or 7 but cannot be 8. Calgary-Winnipeg both finished lower than the Canucks so Vancouver will always be seeded ahead of them. The other 2 play-ins have a team ranked ahead and one lower in the standings.
  20. The Devils identified D as their weakness. Would they even consider parting with him. I do think they would be interested in Boeser but possibly for draft picks rather than create a hole on an already weak defence. Fitzgerald has been confirmed in the GM job and he was talking of using picks to find players. That was pre-pandemic but not sure much has changed since and he's now in charge. He calls Hischier, Hughes and Blackwood the pillars to build around. He referenced the trades they made to get Palmieri and Johansson (both went for draft picks) as the kind of trades they are looking to make. Benning was apparently interested in Tyson Barrie - there were rumours last draft and again this TDL. There's no more UFA interview period but free agency could possibly open up the same day as the draft if the schedule is respected and the finals don't go to game 7. On the same day they could sign Barrie in free agency and trade Boeser for draft picks.
  21. NYI look to be in an even more complicated cap situation than the Canucks. They have just over 10M in cap space to sign RFAs Barzal, Pulock and Toews.
  22. Media seems pretty consistent in saying that signing Toffoli is a top priority with Markstrom for the Canucks.
  23. Canucks can retain on 3 contracts. Benn finished D7 in Vancouver. Not many teams are going to pay 2M for a D7 or even D6.
