  1. Poile didn't technically fire Trotz. His contract was coming to an end and he simply didn't renew it. Poile explained that he still had a lot of respect for Trotz but felt it was time to go out of his comfort zone and try a more aggressive style of play. Trotz's defensive minded system was getting them nowhere. Poile was saying if you want to play an offensive system you need an offensive coach. So he hired Laviolette.
  2. It's outdated. Marleau is no longer with Toronto for example. Soderberg is with Arizona and not Colorado. Pominville isn't playing anymore. Quite a few players on the wrong teams.
  3. He has taken only 38 face-offs in 50 games played in the Q this season. He has been playing wing.
  4. Green is the one that has the overall responsibility. If he doesn't like Baumgartner's approach he needs to instruct him to change it.
  5. Wasn't a line change. The Pettersson line was just on the ice before they pulled the goalie. So with Demko pulled Green went with Horvat Pearson Roussel and Gaudette as the 4x Fs.
  6. Because you don't know which team will ultimately make the dance. No one expected Nashville to struggle as much for example. Also who knows if he can see himself in other colours. The Sedins did not want to play for another team. Koivu just refused to waive.
  7. He's still their leading scorer. All time Duck and just one year left. He has a similar status for them as the Sedins no? Friedman thinks they could move Henrique if the right deal comes along.
  8. If Anaheim wanted to really tank they should move on from Rakell, Manson, Lindholm, Fowler etc but apparently they want to retain those players. Their prospects will be a year more experienced. Maybe it won't be sufficient. Wonder if Anaheim might buy out Backes. The cap hit is manageable and Boston covers 25% of the costs.
  9. Eriksson? Does a depth prospect really hold any kind of value? Teams have depth prospects of their own. Who do you have in mind?
  10. That's not what I wrote. I said they are not tearing their team down. It doesn't mean that they are going to decline getting a 1st round pick. Every team needs to continuously draft if they want to be able to renew their roster.
  11. To get a 1st round pick. It's apparently a very deep draft with many saying it will be possible to find 1st round calibre players in the 2nd round.
  12. Why would they want to burden themselves with Eriksson who costs more and be forced to find another face puncher. Aren't they just better off keeping Deslauriers. They aren't tearing their team down. Murray told media he expects a quick turnaround because they have so many prospects developing already. Probably why Friedman says they made it known to him that guys like Silfverberg, Rakell, Lindholm, Manson aren't going anywhere.
  13. Deslauriers was a UFA but they just extended him for 2 year less than 3 weeks ago. Seems a bit quick to get rid of him. He's the one that drops the gloves for them. I am guessing they want some protection for their young players. Eriksson can't fill that role. Friedman on one his recent podcast says he was told that none of their top guys are going anywhere. Fwiw their long time beat writer Eric Stephens was suggesting a 2nd round pick or a prospect like Jett Woo to take on either Benn (who is now D7) or Baertschi as cap dump.
  14. It could also be pre-emptive. Bailey was recalled on emergency conditions but didn't play as they had 12 Fs ultimately able to play.
  15. The team was up 3-1 but he was back on the ice once the team needed a goal. Here are his final shifts in the 3rd period: 21 3 6:18 / 13:42 6:48 / 13:12 00:30 22 3 8:45 / 11:15 9:26 / 10:34 00:41 23 3 16:25 / 3:35 16:27 / 3:33 00:02 P 24 3 18:23 / 1:37 19:49 / 0:11 01:26 G
  16. Pettersson is not an exception. McDavid plays through plenty of abuse. Hitchcock got mad last year but it didn't change anything.
  17. Valiquette (founder/owner of CSA) has the numbers: As Woodley was explaining most observers/GMs simply look at SV% and GAA and ignore context. Will be interesting to see what happens with his contract.
  18. Extending Markstrom should probably be the priority. CSA Hockey is probably the next level of advanced stats out there. They've tracked every play sequence that has led to a shot on goal. They capture context. They know whether there was a screen with how many players, whether there was a passing play, whether it was a 2on1, 3on1, whether it was off the face-off, off the rush etc. They know the probability that a given play sequence has historically resulted in a goal. By mid-February Markstrom had saved the team some 22 goals above expected. CSA is proprietary so information is rarely available. Easier accessible stats like Natural Stat Trick are not as elaborate as they are based off data points, and can't capture context other than shot location and make some assumption on rush chances. They are often used as proxy. CBJ even posts the Natural Stat Trick numbers on their Jumbotron during games. Natural Stat Trick has the Canucks towards the bottom in expected goals against at 5v5. Heatmaps show that the Canucks allow above average shots from the main scoring areas. SportlogIQ's video tracking software has Markstrom top-5 in goals saved above expected. Re-modelling the defence might not yield much better results if it's more of a system issue rather than personnel. Most of the advanced stats numbers are suggesting that the Canucks are operating in one of the worse defensive environment in the league. Barry Trotz thinks defence is the easiest thing to fix. He says it's not skilled based. For him it's about work ethic and character. Although he didn't say it, he's likely also implying systems. Some here are pointing out the shortcomings of Green's approach. Benning and his crew are watching the same games. Either they feel it's a non issue or they'll address it. Under WD they asked him to adjust systems and brought in Doug Jarvis to help him out.
  19. 3-3 going into the 3rd and then stopped competing. So many players not earning their pay-checks on that team. Mental resiliency and compete is too often lacking.
  20. Tragic numbers and remaining schedule - in red teams in a playoff position. It's simply the number of points a trailing team can still achieve, less the points of the team in wildcard 2 plus 1. He updates them daily. Chicago has 17 games left and can in theory still reach 100 points. Nashville is in Wildcard 2 with 72 points. 100 - 72 gives 28 add 1 = 29.
