Cap Hell for Canucks!!! (GREAT NEWS from Daly re: CAP for next year!!)
mll replied to HKSR's topic in Canucks Talk
Benning seems confident that there are no cap issues. He probably has some roster adjustments already in mind for this summer. You are missing the bonus overage in your calculations. You have Ferland on LTIR and once a team is using LTIR they can't really bank cap space. They aren't accruing anything towards their end of season cap space to pay their bonuses, so it gets carried over to the following season. CapFriendly has the Canucks' end of season cap space at 30'474.- ever since Ferland went on LTIR. That amount hasn't changed despite the movements with Utica and even the Toffoli trade. They are not going to be able to come out of LTIR so the the team will start next season with some 1.7M in bonus overage as Pettersson/Hughes look to hit their schedule A. It could be more if there are games played bonuses. It seems less likely that Pettersson will hit his schedule B of 2M but the season is not over. He has to be top-10 in one of goals, assists, points or points per game. As long as Ferland is on LTIR there will be this overage issue so you need to add the 2020/21 bonuses to your total - would think that Pettersson/Hughes will again hit their schedule A plus Pettersson will continue to progress so maybe he could hit his schedule B. There might also be bonuses for other ELC players. -
Off-season cap space is calculated differently than regular season cap space. In the off-season every player under contract is back on the team's roster. Players on 1-way contracts count at their full cap hit. Players on two-way deals count at the pro-rata of the time they spent on the NHL roster the previous season. RFAs count at the pro-rata of their time on their roster at their qualifying offer.

1 July a year ahead of free agency. I'll reword to make it clearer.

Players on multiple year contracts can be extended as of 1 July a year ahead of free agency. Players on single year contracts can be extended as of 1 January - 6 months ahead of free agency. There are tagging rules though so that can delay the announcement.

[GDT] Around the NHL | February (23-29) 2020
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
CBJ lost both Elvis Merzlikins and Riley Nash to injury last night. Neither travelled to Minnesota for their next game. -
Likely to give him the opportunity to stick in the NHL. Most teams don't try and limit a player's career and he's already 27. He has mostly struggled in the NHL for them so he wasn't really an option to backup Blackwood and they've recently recalled Schneider and demoted him to the AHL. So whether McIntyre or him in the minors it probably didn't matter too much for them. They also save a bit of cash although at this point of the season with only a quarter of the season left it seems fairly negligible.

The trade was 1 for 1 - the Canucks still have their 3rd round pick.

[Rumour] Wild trade Zach Parise to Islanders

Parise has said that he has every intention of playing the full length of his contract provided he is healthy. The recapture penalty has been brought up several times in Minnesota media so he is fully aware of the consequence an early retirement would have. He is the one that asked for a trade last summer because he was concerned about a rebuild with so few years left to his career to win a Cup. NYI is his team of choice to reunite with Lamoriello. -

Suter is still a top pairing D. Still averages the most minutes of any D on the Wild and is up to 41pts on the season - 0.67 pace. -

Talks started last year under Fenton. Parise had expressed concerns about the Wild rebuilding and not being sure if he was up to it. -
[Signing] Predators re-sign Rocco Grimaldi

Relentless worker. Grimaldi-Bonino-Smith has been their most reliable line this season. -
He hurt his ankle last year and returned too early and apparently hasn’t quite had the same speed since. Florida was looking for a LD and was talking with the Wild about Brodin. I get the trade for Carolina where Haula hasn’t quite fit in but a bit surprised by the move by Florida. Feels like those two teams aren’t done yet.

Another Boeser Deal(Discussion)
mll replied to Nuxfanabroad's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Virtanen was 6th overall. He is still working on piecing things together some 6 years after being drafted. Pettersson and Hughes are up and running. Goldobin is a 1st round pick that is already out of the league. Button, Pronman and Wheeler all had Madden as the Canucks’ 3rd best prospect on their respective draft rankings. A Boeser replacement might not be in the pipeline past Podkolzin and Hoglander and who knows how many years away they are. The guys you should be thinking of moving out to create cap is not Boeser. It’s the support players. As young players get better they don’t need the same level of babysitting. Horvat has already played more NHL minutes in his career than Beagle. Benning believes MacEwen is close to being a full time NHLer - do you really need Roussel. Isn’t it overkill to have both Sutter/Beagle when Horvat takes on the larger matchup role already. Dumba is not the right target if you are looking to protect the net. Defensively he can be a real adventure. -

Look at their roster. It makes too much sense. For years they have been lamenting not having appropriate Cs. Guerin is not going to start his GM tenure by lying to fans. Fenton got fired also for his lack of communication with fans and media. You don’t have to disclose who you are talking to but a GM can perfectly admit the obvious. Top 6C is a major issue in Minnesota. Benning is pretty transparent on what he is looking to add. He talked of adding top-6 wingers and did just that.
