  1. They just added Martinez. Tuch went on LTIR a few days ago but is expected back before the end of the season. They have to move cap out to be able to activate him once he is ready to return. They now have a roster of 20 per CapFriendly.
  2. Performance bonuses are accounted for at the end of the season and come out of the end of season cap space. On CapFriendly the Canucks’ end of season cap space has been stuck at 30’474.- ever since Ferland went on LTIR. Any bonuses beyond that amount will be carried over to next season’s cap. Pettersson and Hughes are expected to hit their schedule A of a combined 1.7M. Gaudette and MacEwen might have some games played bonuses. This is Mirtle explaining why Vegas wanted to move the Clarkson LTIR contract: “If you have to use LTIR during a season, which they would have with Clarkson, any and all bonuses immediately carry over to the following year’s cap. You also don’t accrue additional cap space as the season moves along if you’re in LTIR, which can be a nuisance that makes roster maneuvering more difficult.” Cap space is banked when the maximum daily cap hit exceeds the daily cap hits of the players. LTIR allows to exceed the maximum cap hit up to the amount needed to remain cap compliant. So whenever a team is in LTIR there’s no daily difference created that can be banked towards the end of season cap space (as the maximum daily cap hit is equal to the daily cap hits of the roster). The recall conditions with LTIR in use also limits who can be recalled from the minors. In LTIR the performance bonuses that are still attainable have to be covered in a recall. Juolevi has a cap hit of 863K but his recall cap hit with LTIR in use would have been 2.3M earlier this season.
  3. According to Friedman on his latest podcast Manson, Fowler, Lindholm, Rakell, Silfverberg are not going anywhere.
  4. They can have discussions to tell him they want him back and sign him after the draft. It’s also the same year that Pettersson, Hughes are up and they will likely be the priority. Canucks cap situation is unclear with Markstrom, Toffoli, Tanev etc this season. Who comes back, at what costs, are they moving contracts, what about the bonus overage next season, Ferland’s LTIR status all have an impact on the cap. The roster after the summer will give a far clearer picture.
  5. Pearson will be UFA in a year so unless they extend him before, he wouldn’t need expansion draft protection.
  6. 2.325M It’s 100% of the base salary (without bonus) of the final season for salaries above 1M. CapFriendly has a calculator: https://www.capfriendly.com/qualifying-offer-calculator He has arbitration rights and filed last time.
  7. Fwiw NJD talks of using draft picks to acquire young players like they did a few years ago, when they traded a couple of picks to get Palmieri out of Anaheim - he was 23/24 at the time. They also moved picks to get Johansson from Washington. Sounds like they will be looking to make similar trades - guys with some NHL experience but still fairly young.
  8. Mostly offensive Ds available and so many teams looking for D. Scandella getting traded for a 2nd after it took only a 4th for Montreal to get him not all that long ago.
  9. Per Seravalli they apparently asked about Martinez so some indication that Benning might think that the D-corps needs some improvement.
  10. NJD doesn’t have to trade Simmonds if they don’t like the return regardless of what market says. If NJD’s ask is too high teams can walk away. So many trades don’t happen at the end of the day despite discussions taking place. Benning did not want to trade Hamhuis to Dallas because he didn’t like the return. Dallas didn’t want to pay Benning’s ask. Situations evolve constantly. A team is always under assessment. Benning gave Baertschi a 10M deal and now is trying to move him. Look at the Wild. Leipold sending a video message telling season ticket holders that they are not rebuilding. So much that they gave Zuccarello that contract. Now a year later the plan has changed and they just sold Zucker for futures. At any point in time a GM is going to have a certain view on his team but he will continuously adjust the plan. Nothing is linear and certainly not player development or decline. As for NJD Fitzgerald just gave a presser after the Greene trade. He has a certain view of where they are now but maybe in a month it might be different. For now they think Blackwood is the goalie to build around. So seems logical they wouldn’t have much interest in Demko at this point in time. If Blackwood can’t continue his development then they will have to change plans. They apparently talked to Zajac about waiving but he wasn’t interested so unless he changes his mind or they buy him out he’ll finish his contract there. Some teams spend too long on certain players and would probably be better off moving on faster. At some point they will have to make a decision on Zacha but they don’t seem there yet. Galchenyuk went from a 3rd overall with a bright future to someone who struggled to become that C1 they thought they drafted and with off ice challenges. Things don’t stay static and the relationship evolved to the point were it wasn’t surprising that they wanted to move on. Domi is not as secure anymore with the emergence of Suzuki.
  11. Looks like Fiala was trying to break. He turned his skate to try and stop but Hughes pushed him into Markstrom.
  12. Hopefully they do or trade him elsewhere. I see no use to add Simmonds at all costs. They have MacEwen who riled up the Wild last game but Green sits him. Benning explained he brought in guys like Roussel to stand up for the skilled players.
  13. NJD is undecided on trading Simmonds per LeBrun. Sounds like the return will have be worth it or they’ll just keep him. It’s not the Canucks that have the upper hand in the trade - they are the ones who want to bring in toughness. NJD doesn’t have to do anything.
  14. NJD doesn’t have to trade Simmonds to the Canucks. As Fitzgerald was explaining it’s his choice to do what he wants as it’s their players. If the Canucks want Simmonds they’ll have to pay the price that NJD is asking. Doubt it would be Gaudette. Zacha is not going anywhere and they still have Zajac for another year. Also Gaudette is being sheltered and NJD is more likely to shelter Hughes. Not really viable to have 2 lines that need protection from matchups.
  15. They wanted to clear Subban’s full cap hit and not take a roster player back. Gaudette was waiver free. Johansen Duchene Turris Bonino Sissons Jarnkrok are all Cs. It’s a veteran lineup that Gaudette had close to no chance of making - all signed long term. The interest in Gaudette seems exaggerated. Poile explained that he chose the team that was willing to take Subban without retention. He made the return sound secondary.
  16. NJD are unlikely to be interested in Demko. Brodeur is pretty well positioned to judge goalies. Just this week Fitzgerald was talking about how they have pillars for their future already in place - Hischier, Hughes and goalie Blackwood. They are more likely looking for a veteran backup.
  17. They are though so they need to have size elsewhere in their lineup.
  18. After trading Greene Fitzgerald was talking about how they have big pieces already in place - he named Hischier, Hughes and goalie Blackwood. They are more likely looking for a veteran backup to support him and not someone to take his job. They already have Butcher as undersized D. They can’t just remove size from their lineup and replace them with undersized players. They need also some physicality and pushback in their lineup. Subban has far greater marketing appeal than Eriksson and can still rebound.
  19. Friedman also suggesting prospects not necessarily D. From his 31 thoughts: I do think the Canucks still would consider adding a Wayne Simmonds, but that’s more difficult without a 2020 first- or second-rounder. “I don’t foresee us trading any more picks,” Benning said, adding he’d consider something with other prospects. What the Toffoli move tells us, however, is he’s going to try.
  20. Over 5.5M in LTIR cap space perCapFriendly - possibly roughly 1M more as MacEwen would likely be returned to the AHL.
  21. From what I noticed you were suggesting Boston or NYI - teams heading to the playoffs. Not the same as a cap dump to make a trade work. End of season were nothing is in play for LA vs start of the season. Would have been more convenient for the Canucks to move Baertschi rather than Schaller as he has that year left. They weren’t able to make it happen.
  22. Schaller is an upcoming UFA. He was a cap dump in the deal to make the money work. Not a trade where he was considered an asset. LA is out of the playoffs at this point of the season. Everything resets next season and most teams don’t want to start their season with cap dumps on their roster.
