  1. Dumba needs a Tanev to succeed. In Minnesota he played either with Suter and now Brodin. Dumba can be an adventure in his own end. He needs a strong D partner to cover for him.
  2. Kaprisov is more untouchable than Dumba. They want a C1 for Dumba though. They have plenty of wingers but no one to set them up. Boeser would have trouble succeeding in Minnesota - no elite playmaker like Pettersson and too little speed in their lineup. He’s too slow of a skater to carry Staal, Parise etc.
  3. Friedman’s 31 thoughts: 2. Tampa outbid Boston for Coleman, but Edmonton made a real push. A couple of teams said they heard he was the guy the Oilers would give up a first-rounder for.
  4. When they acquired PK, Martin Brodeur talked about how they wanted to bring in a player with personality. Brodeur was working on the marketing side. NJD has to compete with the Rangers to bring in fans. Subban has a lot of celebrities on his address list as well as his fiancée Lindsey Vonn. That was probably part of the appeal for ownership. He still plays over 20 minutes a night. Nashville actually missed Subban according to several observers. They mentioned how he brought so much energy to the bench and was always trying to get players fired up and not give up. Nashville has had trouble finding that compete this season. Not sure NJD wants to trade him for a downgrade marketing wise unless it makes them better hockey wise. Cap dump for cap dump doesn’t improve their team so seems more likely that they keep the guy that can at least bring in celebrities. He might also rebound.
  5. Doesn’t sound like the Coleman trade influenced the Sharks’ ask - price was set before. LeBrun writes in The Athletic (paywall): “He was dealt Tuesday to Washington for a second- and third-round pick and to San Jose’s credit, the Sharks told teams over the past week or so that the price was a second- and a third-round pick. It was really important for San Jose to replenish picks after trading some away, and while some teams balked, GM Doug Wilson wasn’t going to budge on that price.”
  6. Fitzgerald in his presser of yesterday after the Greene trade. He was talking about how they have already big pieces in place - Hischier, Hughes and Blackwood. Says they are very confident in Blackwood. They tweeted the interview.
  7. 16 goals and counting with only 13 minutes of ice time. If the player files the team can elect 1 or 2 years, but here it would be 1 year because 2 would bring him to free agency. The following year he would then be up at the same time as Pettersson/Hughes. He would then be 1 year to free agency and will still have arbitration rights.
  8. He is 2 years to free agency and has arbitration rights. His agent will likely file to improve their leverage that close to free agency.
  9. They'll have no choice but to draft that C1. Guerin doesn't seem to want to move Dumba per Friedman's quote. His name is probably only out there on the odd chance they can find a RJ for Jones type of deal. Don't see it happening.
  10. I think so too but Guerin is under no obligation to trade him. He can wait - Dumba is starting to look better. Fenton failed a couple of trades and didn't maximise the return on Niederreiter and Coyle. Guerin can't do the same. He did well in the Zucker trade by being patient.
  11. Guerin is looking for a C1 in return for Dumba. The Wild desperately needs playmaking Cs. They have wingers and defence. Boeser would probably have trouble succeeding in Minnesota. They have nowhere close to the equivalent of Pettersson to set him up. They are also a rather slow team - he doesn't have the skating speed to carry Parise-Staal. Rask and Donato are even slower skaters than Staal. This was Friedman in his 31 thoughts - Dreger also says that Guerin wants a C1 in return for Dumba: Guerin wouldn’t discuss specifics, but, according to industry buzz, the most asked-about player on his roster is Jonas Brodin, followed by Mathew Dumba. (I’d bet there’s a bit for Marcus Foligno, too.) I don’t get the sense he’s inclined to do anything with either, unless it involves an elite centre, or maybe a No. 2 centre, providing that includes something extra — like a couple of first-rounders or something along those lines.
  12. + some 1.7M less because of the bonus overage. Canucks will stay in LTIR to finish the season so they can't bank cap space. Virtanen is 2 years to free agency and has arbitration rights - his agent is far better off filing if that is all you are willing to offer him. He already has 16 goals on the season playing just 13 minutes per game. Teams can't walk away if the award is just under circa 4.4M.
  13. With LTIR Canucks have over 5.5M in cap space to add. There are no roster limits past the TDL and would think that Benning wants to keep depth going into the playoffs.

    Bess done?

With Boeser, Ferland and Leivo on LTIR for the rest of the season and Bailey returned to Utica - CapFriendly shows the Canucks with 5.59M in cap space. There are no roster limits past the TDL.
  15. Not for Minnesota. Since 1 November Fiala has better numbers than Boeser despite playing with far lesser linemates and getting less opportunities - he was not on PP1 until very recently. Observers in Minnesota are talking of how they've hardly ever had a player like him in franchise history. They sound beyond excited about him. He was breaking out under Boudreau but for whatever reason Guerin made a coaching change. Minnesota has no playmaking Cs. Boeser wouldn't have an elite playmaker like Pettersson to set him up. There would also be no one to create space for him. There have too little speed in their lineup especially now that Zucker has been traded. Fiala has speed to burn so he can create space - Boeser's skating doesn't allow him to. He'll more likely struggle to maintain his production because the way they are set up doesn't help his skill set. I don't think Guerin would care about Boeser being a local kid. Zucker won the King Clancy for his charitable contribution and was very active in the community. He was a fan favourite with his wife also being a local personality. Guerin explaining the trade was saying he's not dumb and knows how much Zucker meant to the community but it's about doing what's best for the team.
  16. Coleman has been one of the most productive goal scorers at 5v5 - he's ranked 18th so far this season and has more 5v5 goals than anyone on the Canucks. Pettersson is just 1 goal behind but plays as the primary offensive line. Vancouver does their damage on the PP but are middle of the pack in 5v5 production. Coleman doesn't really play on the PP but has a key role on the penalty kill. Also - given how Tampa lost to CBJ last year:
  17. Berkshire uses SportlogIQ's video tracking software for his observations. Markstrom has been particularly efficient in the high danger scoring areas. https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/jacob-markstroms-season-impressive-think/ For years we were told Jacob Markstrom was the next great goaltending prospect, but he floundered in Florida and struggled to keep his spot in the league. Eventually the Canucks acquired him, but even with the confidence many hockey people had in him, it took a long time for Markstrom to establish himself. For the past three seasons now he’s been a high quality starting goaltender for the Canucks, and at the age of 30 he’s having the best statistical season of his career on the surface. Digging a little deeper, his performance is even more impressive than his .916 save percentage — which is way above the league average of .909 — shows. While the Canucks are a much-improved team this season in many areas, they still struggle to defend a lot of the time, especially off the rush. The Canucks give up more rush chances than any other team in the league this year, which should give some added context to Markstrom’s numbers. From the most dangerous area of the ice, Markstrom has been incredible this season, posting the fourth-highest save percentage from the inner slot in all situations in the league. Only Tuukka Rask, Jake Allen, and Henrik Lundqvist have been better in tight. From the high slot Markstrom is similarly dominant, exerting his influence on the slot overall to give the Canucks a breather when they have defensive breakdowns. Only Connor Hellebuyck, Carey Price, David Rittich, and Sergei Bobrovsky have faced more scoring chances on net overall than Markstrom, and of that group he holds the highest overall save percentage from the slot at .854, which says a lot. It’s a lot easier to build a team when you have a goaltender you can rely on night in and night out, and Markstrom has been that for the Canucks.
  18. Not allowed to keep healthy players on IR/LTIR. He was most likely placed on LTIR retroactively. Once he is ready to return they have to send someone to Utica to create the necessary cap space.
  19. Ferland is going to stay on LTIR rather than retire. The buyout window is mid-June to end of June. It's closed on 1 July. A 2nd window opens up only if a player on the team files for arbitration. Eriksson's buyout cap hit is 5.67M followed by 3.67M. His contract is buyout proof. Canucks are in LTIR to finish the season and with end of season cap space of only 30K. The bonuses of some 1.7M if not more are going to count against next season's cap.
