  1. This doesn't help Minnesota though and they actually get a fair bit worse and on top of that are giving up a 1st round pick. They have no top-6 Cs in sight and you are taking away one of their best prospect and potential top-6 C in Khovanov. Wheeler has him going in the 1st round in a re-draft. Since 1 November Fiala has better numbers than Boeser while playing with far lesser linemates and way fewer opportunities - they have no Pettersson equivalent on the Wild. Fiala was not even on PP1 until recently. He had a rough start in October but looks to be breaking out. At C he has mostly been playing with Koivu who has now been demoted to C4, wingers forced to play C in Donato/Kunin, or Rask who has often been a healthy scratch and is a buyout candidate. Wild observers are talking about how they hardly ever had a player like him in Wild history. Dean Evason in January was quoted saying that the organisation is so excited because he has tremendous potential. He is a much better fit than Boeser - he is so dynamic and can create offence for his line with his speed - he's blazing fast. Boeser would probably have a very hard time maintaining his scoring pace in Minnesota - he wouldn't have anyone to set him up. They also don't have a lot of speed in their lineup and he's not particularly fast. Soucy is the reason Guerin is willing to trade Dumba for a C1. He has emerged as a top-4 D. Brisebois is unproven and might not even become a NHL regular. The Wild have too many wingers - they have no use for Goldobin. They moved Zucker to open up a spot for Kaprisov. Galchenyuk won't be brought back.
  2. Hischier is actually really good defensively. He's also very good at getting to the scoring areas. He was top-15 in high danger shots last season according to SportlogIQ's video tracking. He's not sheltered and plays against the opponents best players. He's probably their next captain. Don't think they need Gaudette when they have Zacha.
  3. NJD are building around Hughes and Hischier - they are going to be their C1/C2 for years to come. Madden is not going to dislodge them and at C3 it would make them so slight down the middle. Madden is a 3rd round pick and there is really no guarantee that he amounts to anything - like any 3rd round pick. Not only their top-3 Cs would be undersized, but they get another undersize player in Stecher and remove further size on D. On D they already have Butcher who they just extended. At wing they also have Bratt and Gusev. How much smaller should they become. NJD really wanted Bahl in the Taylor Hall deal. It just doesn't make all that much sense to replace a prospect with potential, that fits the age group of the core they are building around, with Stecher who is what he is - an undersized 3rd pairing D with arbitration rights and a too high qualifying offer. NJD has cap space and is not forced to make a move they don't want to. Would think that they are well aware of Ferland's health and that the Canucks are looking to add toughness. LeBrun says they are undecided on moving Simmonds. He also believe that the Penguins will show interest. The Canucks are not in a very strong bargaining position. They have no end of season cap space and are operating in LTIR which is going to create a bonus overage - Pettersson/Hughes are going to hit the max on their schedule A. It's evident that they have to move contracts out. Teams might use that as leverage to increase their ask if they have to take a cap dump contract back.
  4. Gusev and Tolvanen came from the KHL after their post-season ended. Gusev signed his ELC on 14 April 2019 with Vegas - he could have played in the post-season but didn't get into a game. Tolvanen signed his ELC on 29 March 2018 and actually got into 3 NHL regular season games.
  5. Who is he going to trade though. They have mostly youth, or unmovable contracts due to NMCs, contract term, and/or performance. Unmovable: Parise, Suter, Zuccarello, Rask, Pateryn, Dubnyk, Koivu (UFA but apparently uninterested to waive his NMC) Maybe Staal - 1 year left but a limited NTC (probably turned it into a virtual no trade by selecting teams who won't target him) and it's not like they have a replacement in sight. Guerin himself extended Spurgeon. He apparently really likes what Foligno brings on and off the ice - don't see him going anywhere unless an overpayment. Maybe Hartman but he has 1 year left. Friedman quote in his 31 thoughts: Guerin told the Star-Tribune’s Sarah McLellan, “If there is quit, there will be more trades,” but the Wild told him not to worry with a 4–0 shutout of Vegas. What he’s hoping for is the the Ryan Donatos, Jordan Greenways and Luke Kunins take advantage of Jason Zucker’s move to Pittsburgh. (Left unsaid is that it also creates a 2020–21 opening for Kirill Kaprizov.) “Don’t assume more is coming,” the GM said. “That’s not necessarily the case.” Guerin wouldn’t discuss specifics, but, according to industry buzz, the most asked-about player on his roster is Jonas Brodin, followed by Mathew Dumba. (I’d bet there’s a bit for Marcus Foligno, too.) I don’t get the sense he’s inclined to do anything with either, unless it involves an elite centre, or maybe a No. 2 centre, providing that includes something extra — like a couple of first-rounders or something along those lines. Whatever the case, Guerin could have made several moves already, but showed patience. The biggest beneficiary may be the Wild itself, because it would have been easy to give up on Kevin Fiala, now on a tear. “Big difference,” Guerin said. “He’s driven.” Don't really see Guerin wasting his best trade chips unless he gets what the team really needs. Moving Soucy makes limited sense because he's the reason that would allow Guerin to move Dumba or Brodin. The quote by Friedman seems to suggest that he's not quite ready to give up on their youth. ErikssonEK and Fiala are not mentioned but they are turning into key players. I just don't see a lot of trade options. I also don't think he wants to sell for the sake of selling. He seems to have waited out Rutherford to get Addison and didn't take back a cap dump with term.
  6. They just traded veteran Zucker for futures. Galchenyuk is an upcoming UFA. The trade was motivated to get prospect Addison, that 1st round pick and open up a spot on the wings for Kaprisov. That's a rebuilding move.
  7. Thomas Drance has the Canucks with a bonus overage of roughly 1.7M going into next season - the schedule As for Hughes/Pettersson. Teams can't really bank cap space when they are in LTIR so it creates overages that count against next season's cap. He also confirmed that Pettersson could hit an additional 2M if he is top-10 in either goals, assists, points or points per game in the league.
  8. On Insider Trading earlier this week. Pierre LeBrun: That's the not the plan for the Arizona Coyotes. I understand why people are asking the question; after all he may walk out of the door July 1st and get nothing in return, but the reality is owner Alex Meruelo, GM John Chayka and Taylor Hall's agent Darren Ferris all sat down for dinner Sunday night in Montreal. They're all on the same page as to where this is headed right now which is we'll talk after the season. Meruelo really wants to sign Taylor Hall. The Coyotes haven't had a player of this calibre in a long time. They can offer him an eight-year deal which no one else can offer and, yeah, there's a risk because they are not in a playoff spot, but they're happy to live with that risk.
  9. Only 16 games and 250 minutes tracked. With that little sample size per 60 numbers can often be overestimated.
  10. Even without them the Wild would probably still be middle of the pack. They have depth. Even without Sutter their D would still be really solid. They need to find a C1 / C2 and a decent goalie. The goalie they can find in the summer and have Kahkonen in house. The C1 they must draft and maybe can find a C2 in free agency. Their young players need to continue to progress. I get the no man's land comment. That's where they were with Niederreiter, Coyle, Granlund - good enough to make the playoffs but not good enough to do anything. It sure sounds like Guerin is not going to settle for mediocrity and players have to show they want it or they could be out. Fletcher kept on finding excuses and making changes on the fringe and they lost years. Doesn't sound like that will be Guerin.
  11. There's only 1 bad contract - Zuccarello's. The Wild are the best team at limiting quality scoring chances against but goaltending has been below average. Sutter is still a top pairing D and is on pace for 55 pts on the season. Why would they want to get rid of him? Parise has 21 goals on the season. For now these players are still efficient - who knows in a few years but they are not the problem right now.
  12. Neither are those contracts for now. Parise has 21 goals on the season. Sutter still plays close to 25 minutes a night and is on pace for 55pts. Those contracts could get ugly down the stretch but for now they are not limiting the Wild. It's not them the issue.
  13. They are using LTIR for Kevan Miller - he is back on the ice but they really don't know when he will be ready to play. If they think he will be back before the end of the season they will need that cap space to activate him.
  14. Very few playoffs teams actually have the cap space to add Schaller. It would limit them to make other moves. NYI is really one of the few. Cap space is also pro-rated. So a team at the cap still has to be 1.9M under to be able to add Schaller. At the end of the season the sum of all the daily cap hits can't exceed 81.5M and if a team hasn't banked cap space - they only have the pro-rata of whatever is left of the season. Many teams can't bank cap space throughout the season because of injuries and players on IR still count against the cap. The teams who have been using LTIR haven't banked cap space and unless their players have season ending injuries it limits what they can do at the TDL. CapFriendly makes it really easy because they calculate the full cap hit that can be added today while already accounting for banked cap space and the pro-rata. You have to find teams who have a current cap space of more than 1.9M. There aren't that many.
  15. Leipold has no problem spending right up to the cap. He is fed up of mediocrity and doesn't want to make the playoffs to just make the playoffs. He wants to win a Cup. He's the one that tasked Fenton to evaluate their former core and make the necessary moves. He doesn't want good but not good enough. Guerin's role is to build an elite Cup contending team - not just a team that gets into the playoffs. That's why it really doesn't surprise me when Friedman says the ask for Dumba is an elite C1 or a C2 with 2x 1st round picks. Anything less and it doesn't improve their team and they will continue to be stuck in no man's land. Guerin says he's not interested in making a trade for the sake of making a trade. There are empty seats but it's inevitable given where they are right now. The fanbase sound impatient to get Kaprisov over. Fiala looks to be breaking out so there's some buzz there too. They only have 4 more games to the TDL.
  16. I don't expect Dumba to be traded. They will have to draft their C1. Guerin seems very determined on not accepting anything less than what he really wants.
  17. Let's hope they find takers. It would solve a lot of cap issues and create much needed space for next season.
  18. They actually have quite a lot of youth in their lineup and there are still some inconsistencies in their play given them being so early into their careers. There's really not much to tear down. It's more about patience and letting players develop. Virtanen was drafted in 2014 and has still no reached his potential - why would the Wild trade players who were drafted the same year or later than him. They are still the best team in the league at limiting quality chances against. There is no reason to dismantle their D-corps. Goaltending has been a letdown with how solid they play in front of their goalies. They have Kahkonen coming though - he was drafted the same year as Demko and showed really well during his emergency recall. They might need to find a stop-gap goalie this summer and buy out the final year of Dubnyk - don't see that as an issue. Koivu is UFA. Staal has only 1 year left. Parise and Suter aren't going anywhere (NMC and recapture contracts à la Luongo) but they are still playing important roles. Spurgeon just got extended by Guerin. Really the only veteran contract that is a nuisance is Zuccarello's and he has a NMC. They moved Zucker to create a spot for Kaprisov. Sturm will replace Koivu. Their young players seem too young to give up on. Foligno has been great and is only 28 - would think they will even extend him. Fiala ??? Kaprisov Parise Staal Zuccarello Foligno ErikssonEk Kunin Greenway Sturm Hartman That 2nd line is the issue going forward as well as C1 but Parise has 21 goals on the season. Staal will be in his final year. They need to add players in the system to find that C1 / C2 and 2x top 6 wingers. There's Boldy, Khovanov, Beckman and they have 2 x 1st round picks this season. No guarantee that these prospects make it but adding that 1st round pick while opening a spot for Kaprisov was a good move for Zucker.
  19. They will conduct a full search in the off-season. It was something that Guerin had been thinking about for a while. Boudreau was in the final year of his deal. They blew a 2 goal lead last night and those 3rd period meltdowns have been happening a lot this season.
  20. Pettersson and Hughes are likely going to hit their schedule A of 1.7M combined. Gaudette and MacEwen might have some games played bonuses. There is about 27% of the season left today. The Canucks are in LTIR so they are not banking cap space. They can only create cap space over the rest of the season. To create 1.7M with 27% of the season left they need to clear some 6.3M - 6.3M x 27% = 1.7M. The closer to the TDL the more cap space they need to clear because there is less time left to bank cap space. There will likely be an overage and the earlier they can come out of LTIR and start banking cap space the better.
  21. Tuch was an expansion mistake and the Wild could sure use Haula today. Niederreiter, Coyle and Granlund were good but not good enough. The Wild made the playoffs but were unable to go deep. The Wild want to win a Cup and it was apparent they were stuck in no man's land with that core. They had to shake things up. Fiala is becoming the game breaker Fenton described and few Wild fans would revert that trade now. Niederreiter is struggling in Carolina and although Rask was a pitiful return - his buyout cap hit is only going to be 1.3M which is manageable. Donato for Coyle was a win for the Bruins but Coyle was not able to carry a line. In Boston they have a top line so he's not under the same pressure as in Minnesota.
  22. He's not under any pressure. Leipold is not interested in making the playoffs just for the sake of making the playoffs. He wants to win a Cup and it's not going to happen this year. I think it's more how they lost. They had a 2 goal lead and blew it. It has happened quite a few times this season where they were ahead and somehow sat back and didn't get the full 2pts.
  23. Parise has 21 goals on the season and is still doing Parise things. Suter still plays close to 25 minutes a night and has 39pts (0.68 pace). The Wild are best in the league at limiting quality chances against and Suter, although he has slowed down, is still a solid top pairing D when paired with Spurgeon. Parise and Suter for now are still performing. Zuccarello is really their only contract that doesn't look great today and he has a NMC.
