  1. Josi is still under contract this season - it's next year that he will be a free agent. They only have RFAs Sissons and Grimaldi to sign but do want to make changes to their team. It's not certain that Subban is the one on the move though.
  2. Seravelli says the belief is that the Jets have offered up Ehlers for one of their right shot-D.
  3. A TDL ago they sent out a letter to season ticket holders saying they don't think they can win with the team as it is constructed and announcing that they were going in a rebuild. They were still fighting for a playoff spot but started selling off players. They asked Lundqvist whether he wanted to be moved or stick around through the rebuild.
  4. Minnesota has one of the best top-4 Ds when all healthy. Fenton wants to keep them together - they have no replacement in the near future. It's easier to find wingers.
  5. Braun could be on the move - 3.8M. He is a RD like Burns and Karlsson who play top minutes. Nyquist is probably on the way out. Wilson doesn't exclude finding a solution with Pavelski. Might be challenging to retain him but the Sharks are contenders for next season. He will get better offers on the open market but teams willing to pay him might not be as well positioned as the Sharks. He turns 35 in July and might prefer to try again with the Sharks. Wilson seems to think that he can get a bridge from Meier - said he talked to him and his agent and they understand the cap. LaBanc is probably the same route. Barracuda and SJS share the same ice so they could also go with 21 players at home to continue to bank cap space - they probably have some waiver free prospects that will go up and down between both leagues.
  6. Ottawa's 2018 1st was top-10 protected so they pushed it to the following year only to find themselves last in the league in 2019. Can the Canucks really be confident that they won't win the lottery in 2021 when the 1st will no longer be lottery protected.
  7. In his press conference talking about the signing Wilson named Vlasic as part of their top D-players with Karlsson and Burns. They are not looking to trade him. "To have three-high end defensemen (Burns, Karlsson, Marc-Edouard Vlasic), to be strong down the middle is really important. I think that's the foundation of any successful team," Wilson said. "Yes, you're going to have to integrate others in, you have to make decisions, but I tell you, knowing that we have this type of defense, knowing we have these types of centermen, it's a really good point to go forward and build our team off of."
  8. 6M is not enough of an incentive to leave the Sharks. They are competitive now and their window is wide open. Vancouver is still rebuilding and who knows how long it will take and who will still be around when the rebuild is done. Canucks have still quite a few missing pieces and no top prospect in the minors ready to make a push before a few years. The D needs work while the Sharks have probably the strongest blue line in the league. The Sharks would gladly match a 6M aav - it's far less than his potential worth. They think he's going to get so much better. They feel he's just starting. There was close to 20 game stretch where he didn't get a goal. Wilson has no intention to trade Meier - their window is open and he's a key part of their team. He said he talked to Meier and his agent and they both understand that a bridge will be the way to go given their cap situation. Doesn't sound like he thinks there will be an issue to get Meier under contract. They should be able to move Braun (3.8M) and fill the rest of the roster with cheap contracts/ELCs.
  9. There's another approach that allows to exceed the cap up to his cap hit. Under that approach it's assumed his replacements are already on the roster. The CBA has an illustration - art 50.10 (d): llustration #4: The Upper Limit in a League Year is $70.0 million. A Player who has an SPC with an Averaged Amount of $2.0 million becomes unfit to play on the last day of Training Camp, and on the same day, his Club exercises the Bona-Fide Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception on such Player. On Opening Day, the Club has an Averaged Club Salary of $71.5 million (excluding Earnable Performance Bonuses up to the full amount of the Performance Bonus Cushion). The Club is deemed to have already fully replaced the unfit-to-play Player with any Player or Players on the Opening Day Roster. If these replacements are maintained through the conclusion of the season, the Club's Averaged Club Salary is $71.5 million, as the Club is permitted to exceed the Upper Limit by $1.5 million because of the Bona-Fide Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception.
  10. They want to accelerate their rebuild. LeBrun says they are going to be aggressive this off-season and plan to be very active in free agency. Panarin is apparently a key target.
  11. Don't think it's allowed if he wants to stay in the NHL. He would have been paid an average of 9M but the Canucks only had a cap hit of 6M. It would be too easy for teams to artificially reduce the cap hit by agreeing with players at the contract signing date that they would mutually part ways a few years before the contract is up. It's pretty similar to recapture contracts where they tagged on additional years to reduce the cap hit with the understanding that the player could retire before the contract is fully played out.
  12. See the illustration from the CBA I posted a bit earlier on the so-called training-camp approach. And here are examples from CapFriendly for both approaches: https://www.capfriendly.com/ltir-faq Basic Equation Example The league upper limit is $69M. A team has an averaged club salary of $68M and a player with a 35+ contract with an AAV of $5M ($3M cap hit and $2M in performance bonuses) becomes injured and the team places him on LTIR. The LTIR relief pools are calculated as follows: AAV of LTIR player is $5M Cap space = $69M - $68M = $1M ACSL = $69M - $1M = $68M LTIR relief: Base salary relief pool: $3M Performance bonus pool: $2M Once the team operates above $68M, they have $3M in salary relief, and $2M in performance bonus relief pools. To add to this example, if the team were to recall a player from the AHL with a cap hit of $950k, the ACSL would be maximized, allowing the team to further exceed the league upper limit: AAV of LTIR player is $5M Cap space = $69M - $68.95M = $0.05M ACSL = $69M - $0.05M = $68.95M LTIR relief: $3M Base salary relief pool: $3M Performance bonus pool: $2M For this reason, when a player is activated onto LTIR, one day recalls are relatively common as they can be used to maximize the ACSL. Training-Camp Equation Example The league upper limit is $69M. A team has an averaged club salary of $71M and a player with a cap hit of $5M ($5M cap hit, $0 in performance bonuses) becomes injured and the team places him on LTIR. The LTIR relief pools are calculated as follows: Team cap hit = $71M ACSL = $71M - $5M = $66M LTIR relief: Base salary relief pool: $5M Performance bonus pool: $0 Once the team operates above $66M, they have $5M in salary relief, and $0 in performance bonus relief pools. When using the training camp formula, 100% of the relief pools are used when the player is initially placed on LTIR.
  13. and the Blues. In the playoffs they had no one drafted top-10 the past 8 years. Highest in the lineup drafted the past 8 years was 14th in 2010.
  14. 4 x 1st. The compensation is determined by dividing the contract value at most by 5 years. Wilson has already talked to Meier about a bridge deal. He isn't going to sign an offer sheet.
  15. About a week ago they did a pre-draft conference with Fletcher and AGM Brent Flahr where they touched several subjects. That's not where I got it, but here's a quote from Brent Flahr that conveys the feeling that a D would be their preferred option assuming he's BPA. They got caught in Minnesota when they went for needs and took Eriksson Ek over Boeser because he was a C. Charlie O'Connor behind the Athletic's paywall “I think the way we look at it, we will take the best player at 11,” Flahr began, before acknowledging that organizational needs would not be ignored. “I think as we go in the draft, we have some young defensemen that are in the NHL right now, and a couple coming, but we’d probably like to add defenseman depth to our organization going forward, whether it’s at 11 or the second or third round, we will see. But again, if the best player is a left winger, we will address that.” [...] And within that top 15, they currently have at least two defensemen in their top 10 — even though only one blueliner (Bowen Byram) is viewed as a lock to be taken in that range. If No. 11 comes around and Byram is the only defenseman off the board, the Flyers will have at least one player at that position who they rate as high-end staring them in the face. ---- Fwiw Poile the year they drafted Fabbro said ahead of the draft that they take BPA but were hoping for it to be Ds in the 1st 2 rounds - they got Girard in the 2nd round. The year before they said they wanted Cs.
  16. He's on IR because they didn't need the cap space but next year they will put him on LTIR which will allow them to get up to 5.25M in extra cap space.
  17. They are looking to build a true scoring 2nd line. They want a C2 to play with van Riemsdyk and Voracek/Konecny. Those are offensive players. They are not looking for someone like Sutter at C2. Easier minutes and less pressure to score for Patrick at C3.
  18. Stecher is more valuable than Hutton and Biega but he might still not garner a lot of interest around the league. Stecher's ice time kept on decreasing at the Worlds as the tournament went on. He started top-4 and by the finals he was a D7 playing only 6:36 and 7 shifts in the final game. He got overtaken by Fabbro (10 NHL games) who started as D7 and even Philippe Myers (21 NHL games) who joined mid-tournament.
  19. Hutton could cost more than Dillon or even Braun. He has arbitration rights and teams can't walk away from awards under 4.4M. He was played like a top pairing D and ice time is a key argument in arbitration. Sharks don't need another D7.
  20. Whatever is left. He's over 35 so they can put performance bonuses based on production, games played etc. They will be shedding the Martin buyout cap hit of 1.4M in a year and that can cover part of a bonus overage.
  21. There's another option - you can go above the cap up to the Clarkson cap hit and assume that his replacements are already on the roster. Detroit has been using that approach in the past. The CBA even gives an example of the option of exceeding the cap instead of trying to get under. It's assumed that his replacement are already on the roster. Art. 50.10 (d) Illustration #4: The Upper Limit in a League Year is $70.0 million. A Player who has an SPC with an Averaged Amount of $2.0 million becomes unfit to play on the last day of Training Camp, and on the same day, his Club exercises the Bona-Fide Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception on such Player. 22. I think he will and it will be a very team friendly contract. He wants to win a Cup.
