[Signing] Sharks re-sign Erik Karlsson
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Cut & paste of his other tweets: Karlsson: The #SJSharks “never pushed me to make a decision, they just let me play hockey” last season. Calls it “handled extremely well, and professional on their part”. Karlsson: “San Jose has been a good team for like 20 years now, that shows a lot…” says playoff process and seeing teammates under adversity gave him great grasp of franchise/group. Karlsson: “My focus ever since I got traded to San Jose, was on San Jose”. Never really tested any other options out there OTT & MTL included. Karlsson: “This is something I was thinking about the whole year, but it wasn’t until the last couple weeks that they got real serious.” Karlsson: Says it was a “family decision” but also based on career/hockey to stay in San Jose. Any other reports had no merit. Karlsson: “I felt like a Shark all year”. Currently in recovery process - doesn’t expect groin injury/surgery to impact the start of his next season. -
Kovalchuk will be a UFA for the expansion draft and doesn't need to be protected. The expansion draft is in 2 years and his contract has 2 years remaining. LA is rebuilding and looking for picks/prospects - they need to get younger / faster. They are willing to take Marleau's contract because they don't need the cap space in the short term. They would like to send to Toronto a longer term contract at a lower cap hit in return because they think they'll need the space in a couple of seasons.

Barracuda shares the rink with the Sharks. They can go 21 players at home and bank cap space during that time - must be waiver free though. They might have to let Pavelski go though unless he takes quite the pay cut. -
[Report] Ducks name Dallas Eakins as head coach

Anaheim is rebuilding and Murray expects quite a few of their prospects to make the team next year. He gets to continue the work he started down in San Diego with their top prospects. -
[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on
mll replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Vegas is close to the cap and can't take on Eriksson - not that they would have interest. They have their own players to sign. They can receive cap relief for Clarkson's contract by putting him on LTIR. His contract is also insured and ends in a year - after Clarkson's bonus payment it's only 200K in salary. Eriksson takes a roster spot and it's a 6M cap hit for another 3 years. -

The Sharks don't consider Vlasic a bad contract. No way they are moving Meier. Wilson has already been talking to Meier and his agent about a bridge deal. -

He was a real difference maker for the 2 months stretch where he was fully healthy. Unfortunately they didn't have him healthy for the playoffs. They are obviously confident that they will get the elite player he was when healthy. -

Don't think it will be that high for Meier. Pavelski might be gone though unless he takes quite the pay-cut. They will probably move Braun - 1 year left at 3.8M. Both Burns and Karlsson play big minutes on the right side and don't need a 3rd pairing D at that price. -

Meier will take a bridge. Doug Wilson - via Kurz in the Athletic (paywall): “We historically have had players who have benefitted playing with really good players who understand to keep a group together, we’ve done bridge contracts,” Wilson said when asked about Meier’s next deal. “I’ve had conversations with his agent and Timo certainly understands how everybody’s been treated, and we’ll treat him well. Keeping everyone together is a challenge of our cap system. But I think it’s one of the reasons why we’re so loyal to our own players and young guys who have come up through the system is they know how we try to treat them.” -

He was dealing with a groin injury that required surgery at the end of the playoffs. -

A 2nd round pick in 2021. Sign and trade was the only option. Only the team who holds a player's rights at the last TDL before signing date can offer 8 years. -
They are looking for a difference maker. Fletcher and AGM Brent Flahr made perfectly clear that they are not interested in rentals or quantity. They want to compete now. Their target is established young impact players who can be with the team for the long term.

He is a RFA but the Canucks would need to qualify him to retain his rights. Hutton has arbitration rights and has played a lot of minutes last year suggesting that he was considered a 1st pairing D. Time on ice is a key argument in arbitration. He could end up getting an award that is a fair bit over his value. Teams cannot walk away if awards are under 4.4M.

Minnesota has no interest in giving up picks. It's more likely them that would be willing to move down to add a 2nd. Fenton talks of how bare their cupboards are. They need to re-stock with Fletcher having traded so many picks the past seasons.

[Rumor] Canucks interested in Anton Forsberg
mll replied to CRAZY_4_NAZZY's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Fletcher acquired Dubnyk for a 3rd round pick. Fletcher is looking for a veteran goalie to support Carter Hart. Markstrom wants to be a starter and he's a free agent in one year. Patrick is available for a difference maker. They are not looking to trade him but would be willing to if that's the acquisition cost of a legit impact player - they are looking for quality. -
There hasn't been one single sign and trade in the cap era according to LeBrun. There is no reason for the other team to have Vancouver negotiate the contract of a pending free agent. LA Kings are rebuilding and have no need for Edler. They are looking for picks and prospects to get younger.

CBJ lost picks but they also need players. They are a young team who want to continue to take steps forward. There's no reason for them to create holes in their roster without upgrades coming back - they are losing enough UFAs. CBJ has plenty of cap space to sign Duchene but David Savard just talked of him to Montreal media as all but gone. Wennberg did struggle last season but at the Worlds he got to play C1 for Sweden and it looks like he found his confidence. Kekaleinen talked of how Wennberg had a bad year but thought he was great at the Worlds and expects him to rebound next season. LD: Werenski Murray Harrington RD: Jones Savard Nutivaara Kukan That's 7 Ds with Clendening likely heading back to the AHL. There's no real reason for them to weaken their left side unless they get an upgrade.

Ottawa is talking long term deal with Ceci. They shouldn't have a problem to reach the floor. There's noise that they want to bring back Spezza to mentor their kids. Ceci was on a 4.3M deal last season. They are missing 14M to the floor but have 8 players to add to reach 23 including extensions for Ceci and White.

[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on
mll replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I don't think it's possible if he wants to stay in the NHL. Eriksson would have been paid an average of 9M after bonus payment in July, but the Canucks only had a 6M contract on the books. There will always be doubt that teams could agree at contract signing date to mutually terminate the contract before it's term - it's a way to artificially reduce the cap hit. -
The Canucks don't have a legit top pairing yet. To compensate they need better than bottom pairing Ds on their 3rd pairing because their top is not good enough for now. The Canucks were bottom-3 in production from the blue line and had trouble moving the puck out. By mid-February they were 3rd in dump-in rates according to NHL Network.

Luongo hasn't decided on his future yet - they'll probably know this week as teams can't start talking to free agents on the 23rd. Florida says it's up to Luongo - the understanding if he returns is that it will be in a back up role. He can't have the workload of a starter anymore.
