[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on
mll replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Chicago sent goalie Cristobal Huet to Europe. https://www.capfriendly.com/players/cristobal-huet He was on 5.625M cap hit. By the sounds of it Chicago got full cap relief but continued to pay his salary. It was under the former CBA where cap hits could be entirely buried in the AHL. Wouldn't a loan to Europe be treated like a demotion to the minors - a 1.075M cap relief with the balance remaining on the books. -
[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on
mll replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
MacArthur's contract is insured and helps them reach the floor. They are probably looking for more LTIR contracts which are covered by insurance. They get the cap hit for minimal cost. Eriksson takes a roster spot and has to be paid. -

Only the arbitrator has to buy it. As you demonstrate Hutton is not a top-4 D. He was deployed as one and his agent can argue that in arbitration with ice time being a key argument. Teams can't walk away from awards under ~4.4M. His arbitration rights and his excessive ice time complicate a possible trade. If the Canucks want to retain him he could end up being overpaid if he takes the team to arbitration.

[Speculation] Lucic says he would like to play here
mll replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Puljujarvi thinks he will be traded but it sounds like Holland would like to keep him. Earlier this past season they were apparently telling teams that if they wanted Puljujarvi they had to take Lucic - here they don't even get cap relief. Lucic for Eriksson is still 6M on their books. They might as well keep Lucic and hope he rebounds under a new coach/new GM. Even if they are trying to move Lucic alone without taking Eriksson back, 6M is not going to buy them an upgrade on Koskinen, 3x top-6 players and a D-corps. They don't have the cap space to fix their team in one off-season. Edmonton could be better off just keeping Lucic for now and continuing to add to their prospect pool. They've got some good prospects coming but not enough. They can re-visit the situation later once Holland has a better view of the team and how the players fit Tippett's system. Trading picks and prospects will never allow them to have the right structure to move forward. They will be continuously trying to fill holes through free agency and that's often just bad contracts waiting to happen - especially on a struggling team where free agents ask for more term/dollars to convince them to sign. GMs have been talking "Detroit model" for years. It collapsed because they didn't have enough good prospects coming up through the system and ended up signing players to too onerous deals. Holland probably wants to do it better in Edmonton. He is not going to want to compound the mistakes of the previous regime by trading picks/prospects for quick fixes. They are in a mess and getting rid of Lucic to take on Eriksson while giving up better assets isn't going to solve their problems, plus they will have even less players coming up through the system. -

They have players coming up through the system already - Bouchard, Benson, Yamamoto etc. They just aren't yet established. Holland is not starting from scratch. 8th overall will get added to that pool of prospects. He's not thinking of high draft pick rather continuous progress. The team has to grow and improve but you can't fix it in one off-season. -

It's not to wait longer - it's to build something that is sustainable rather than put bandaids. If McDavid can see that there is a plan in place to have the team improve it's very different than the chaos they have been in the past years. The Canucks are asking the same patience out of Boeser, Horvat who was drafted 2 years earlier than McDavid. -

Holland doesn't seem to have playoffs as a priority. For him it's more about evaluating the team next year. He says you 1st have to build the team then you make a trade or two. He just doesn't know his team well enough to know what they need. Tippett is also coming in new. They don't know if Koskinen is their answer in goal. Hitchcock overplayed him and that might explain his drop in performance. There are just too many questions for the playoffs to be a realistic objective for next season. They are not 1 player away and don't have the cap space to fill their needs through free agency. They'd like to move Lucic because the situation is unsatisfying but likely not at the cost of the future Holland is trying to build. Holland talks of how young McDavid and Draisaitl still are. McDavid was drafted the same year as Boeser and Draisaitl the same year as Virtanen. He wants to build a perennial contender and part is having prospects in the system pushing for spots. Edmonton has stagnated for so long. There's probably some cleaning up to do to improve their process at all levels. Scouting, development hasn't exactly been a strong suit. In a Lucic for Eriksson swap, Kuzma seems to suggest that it's not necessarily Edmonton adding. He writes: https://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/ben-kuzma-canucks-gm-benning-wants-physicality-but-is-eriksson-lucic-swap-the-answer Whoever finds more value in one of the wayward wingers may have to sweeten the potential deal and part with a draft pick. One report suggested it was Edmonton, but it might be Vancouver. “We’d like to get bigger and more physical and stronger,” said Canucks general manager Jim Benning. “That’s an element that I thought we were missing at times last year and we’ll see if we can try to address that somehow. He also mentions that Eriksson's comments to media hurt the Canucks' trade clout. -
He is RFA with arbitration rights. He is going to be qualified and can take the Jets or his new team to arbitration to get a 1-year deal that brings him right up to free agency.
-
Canucks might be ready to move on in 2 years. He's 33. This is likely the last NHL contract he signs so he likely wants more than 2 years to bring him up to retirement.
-
No he can be extended now. He's an RFA this summer and needs a new contract for next season. It's contracts that expire next summer that can only be extended as of 1 July.
-
Johnson is 31 and has 4 more years - his contract ends at the same time as MacKinnon's. He is already showing signs that the game is becoming too fast. He might have to be moved before his contract is up. Colorado has cap space for now so the length of his contract is not necessarily a limitation. They do have Timmins coming on the right side but at this point they are just hoping he can play next season and will ease him in. They might end up drafting that C. Benning believes that up to #6 the player could step right in. Their young players are going to be a year older and more experienced. Barrie is a free agent in one year and to make that trade they would need to have an extension in place. Given the uncertainty around Edmonton it's doubtful he would want to sign an extension right now. He knows he will have options if he goes to free agency in a year. Dave Tippett says he likes Draisaitl with McDavid. That would put RNH at C2. Holland talks of building their core and how they are still so young. Do they really want Barrie now when he won't be enough to turn their team around. Barrie does fill a need but it might be getting ahead of things when they need to make sure there are players coming up through the system to make them a contender. They don't have the cap space to fill in their other needs through free agency. The timing doesn't seem quite right. It sounds like Holland sees this season more as an evaluation. He says you build first and then you make a trade or two.

Arizona is already closer to the cap ceiling than the floor with still a few players to re-sign. Florida wants to be aggressive in the off-season. Tallon has received the green light to spend right up to the cap. Their top targets are Panarin and Bobrovsky - they might even have to move Hoffman coming off a 70pts season to create additional cap space. Ottawa wants to bring back Spezza. They are only some 12M from the floor with still 8 players to add. They don't need a 6M player in Eriksson unless the Canucks offer them picks/prospects towards their rebuild. They can always help out Vegas by taking on the Clarkson contract - it's only 200K in salary after his bonus is paid for a 5.25M cap hit.
-
The Wild can do without Boeser. They can't do without Dumba. Teams are now playing with 5 players in each zone. Having Ds that can carry the puck and make plays is essential. Those kind of Ds are still much harder to find than wingers. The Wild want to compete now and are not rebuilding. Juolevi is not yet NHL ready. He also plays the left side where they already have Suter and Brodin. They would have only Spurgeon on the right side and he is a free agent in one year - they are trying to extend him. Minnesota has one of the best top-4 in the league and it's really not worth breaking it up unless they have to. A season ago when everyone was healthy their Ds had 200pts - 2nd best mark in the league. This season they were the team that allowed the least amount of shots from the inner slot. Both owner Leopold and GM Fenton could not stop talking about how much the loss of Dumba hurt their season.
-
Change of scenery type of deal à la Spooner for Gagner. Eriksson played for Tippett in Dallas. Benning wants more bite/heaviness in the lineup.
-
Some here think Edmonton has to give up 8th overall to dump Lucic - how much less would the Canucks have to give up to dump Eriksson. Teams near the floor are more likely to add a LTIR contract as it doesn't use a roster spot and the cost is minimal. As it happens Vegas has Clarkson's LTIR contract - it's only 200K in salary after his bonus is paid for a 5.25M cap hit. Last year Chicago gave up Hinostrozza to move Hossa's contract out.

[Speculation] Lucic says he would like to play here
mll replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Per Dreger, Benning sees value in adding Lucic with several smallish players on the roster as he brings bite. -
Johnson does not have the puck moving ability of Barrie and doesn't produce at his level. For Bednar the Ds have to be right up in the play. It will depend how reasonable Barrie's salary demands are. Johnson is a great leader for them but the game is getting just a bit too fast. He is still useful as their younger Ds adjust but to choose between Barrie and Johnson I think they would rather keep Barrie. Sakic says they will be looking into free agency. For him they are still in rebuild mode with a lot of youth that need to take the next step for them to really become contenders.
-
Sakic said he would like to extend Barrie. They will discuss this summer.

Stecher is a D. Teams can protect 7F + 3Ds or 8 skaters (eg 4F + 4Ds) if they prefer to protect more than 3 Ds. -
Would Horvat have developed as he did playing with the other wingers available in a shutdown role vs playing with a skilled offensive player in Baertschi.
-
Benning didn't view the players he brought in as "plugs". The only "plugs" were Vanek, Vrbata and possibly Skille. Everyone else was viewed as having potentially a long career in Vancouver if things worked out. He was even specifically asked if Gagner, MDZ were brought in to then be sold at the TDL. He was surprised that it was even a question and said that he hoped to extend them if things go well.
-
Who would have Horvat been playing with if the Canucks had not traded for Baertschi? Canucks were right up to the cap - Prust, Cracknell, Higgins, Burrows, Dorsett, Vey, Vrbata, Hansen, rookie Virtanen were the other wing options. The following season replace Prust with Skille who did play a fair bit with Horvat-Baertschi before Burrows took his spot. Sutter was acquired to be a C2. He was described as stuck behind Crosby/Malkin and had more offence to bring. He was even playing on PP1 or on the Sedins wing. WD saw Horvat as a shutdown C. He said he played Baertschi with Horvat because Baertschi was struggling to find his offence but his defensive game was solid, so he could use him with Horvat to shutdown the other team. They somehow found a way to click offensively and WD then separated them explaining that Baertschi was taking Horvat off his game because Sven was an offensive player and Horvat was better suited to play with defensive wingers. He even started Horvat the following season on the 4th line with Dorsett-Burrows.
