[Rumour] Ducks exploring trade market for Corey Perry
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
They aren't trying to clear cap space but a roster spot to play their prospects - guys like Sam Steel. They are rebuilding. Anaheim is prepared to buy Perry out. -
Colorado needs a playmaking C2. They already have Soderberg as their C3 - he had 49pts last season.

Anaheim is rebuilding. They are trying to move Perry because they want to give his ice time to their prospects. They don't need the cap space and don't want to add veterans. If they can't find a partner they will buy him out. -
[Speculation] Lucic says he would like to play here
mll replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Canucks might not want to risk leaving players like Lind, Gadjovich exposed. Everyone that played in the AHL this season are expansion eligible. Juolevi needs protection on D. So does Stecher. Maybe Edler gets a NMC. They want to add a top-4 D through free agency - ideally they find 2. So that's potentially 4 Ds that need to be protected. It would only leave 4 spots at F. Btw Baertschi and Pearson are UFAs. -

Florida wants to go after Panarin and might have to off-load Hoffman who just came off a 70pt season to create cap space. They have no room for Perry. NYI wants to be aggressive in free agency. Trotz talks about how they lack high end talent up front. That's not Perry anymore. They are also a great skating team. Carolina is all speed - probably the fastest team in the league. He wouldn't be able to keep up. Colorado is similar to Carolina - young and fast. Sakic talks of free agency and the team improving. Don't think he wants to use a roster spot on a slowing down veteran. It's hard to see a landing spot for him with the league so much faster. -
[Speculation] Lucic says he would like to play here
mll replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Dreger says that Benning sees value in adding Lucic. He explains that the Canucks have several smallish players in Pettersson, Boeser, Hughes and Lucic would bring some bite. He talks of a sweetener because of the extra year. Lucic for Eriksson might happen. Lucic would waive - would Eriksson. He played for Tippett in Dallas. -
(Rumour) Poolparty wants out of Edmonton

That average is misleading. It's more that there were no other options. Edler missed 26 games and the rest of the left was Hutton, Pouliot, Sautner, Brisebois and MDZ or Biega playing his off-side. -
[Proposal] Canucks and Avalanche Trade
mll replied to RowdyCanuck's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Colorado has plenty of cap space. Sakic talks of how they are still rebuilding so can't see them trading key prospects or high draft picks. The Avalanche are also such a young team - Johnson is a big part of their leadership group. Zadorov Barrie Girard Makar Cole Johnson Hutton is not an upgrade on the left side and moving Johnson would create unbalance re handedness. He also doesn't replace Johnson's leadership. -

Anaheim is rebuilding. They are going to keep their picks. If they can't move Perry it's likely per LeBrun that they buy him out. -
[Report] Jeff Skinner and Sabres closing in on deal
mll replied to DontFockWithBrock's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Front-loaded deals increases the buyout cap hit. The buyout cap hit is cap hit less salary savings. The less salary owed the lower the salary savings - so the higher the buyout cap hit. The NHL doesn't want teams to front load contracts to get a lower cap hit, and then simply buyout the players the final years of his contract. If a team thinks buyout they should try and backload the deal or keep the salary at least constant. -

I agree. Some teams just over-thought the process. They should have just accepted to lose a player and be done with it. -

A lot can change in 2 years. Who knows who they add through trade or free agency. There is always the situation where they might want to protect 4 Ds - so only 4 Fs spots left. Baertschi, Pearson and Sutter are UFAs and don't need to be protected. Lind, Gadjovich, Jasek, MacEwen could though. Vegas got top assets to not select certain players. -

A player can agree to waive his NMC to be exposed in the expansion draft - Toby Enstrom did. As for whether the NMC travels with Lucic - CapFriendly believes it is possible to nullify the clause. https://www.capfriendly.com/faq#nmc The clause can travel with the player even if he consents to being traded or is claimed on waivers This requires that the acquiring team sign an addendum to the contract ensuring that the clause does in fact travel with the player (written by the player's agent) If the acquiring team refuses to sign the addendum, and the player waives his clause anyway, at that point the clause may be nullified -
Ottawa wants to bring back Spezza. They are actually pretty close to the floor. They can just elect to pay him a bit more to reach it rather than commit 3 additional years to Eriksson. The Clarkson LTIR contract in Vegas is a much cheaper option. After his bonus is paid it's only 200K for a 5.25M cap hit. Vegas will probably add an asset as they are so close to the cap. There are also rumours of a Lucic for Eriksson swap. Dreger says that Benning does see value in adding Lucic. He thinks that it would have to come with a sweetener because of that extra year. Lucic a few weeks ago talking about how he would like to play in Vancouver and how it could still happen suggests that he knows about that possibility.

[Speculation] Canucks all in for Jason Zucker
mll replied to CRAZY_4_NAZZY's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Not from the Wild's perspective. They are looking for proven goal scorers. Their top-4 D is one of the best in the league when everyone is healthy. A season ago when Zucker had his 64pt season, their Ds had 200pts to Vancouver's 122pts. This season Minnesota was the team that allowed the least shots from the inner slot. They were also top-5 in limiting shots against by the TDL. Tanev would also be a 1 year rental. They are at risk of losing Spurgeon in a year but Tanev is not his replacement. The Wild need more scoring. They have too many left wings and only 1 right shot. Virtanen as right wing and right handed shot does fill a position of need but he is not a proven goal scorer. They already have a lot of inexperience on their roster. Leopold demands the playoffs. -

Slowing down vets and inexperience - that doesn't look like an efficient combo. Rask could already be on his way out. Penguins-Wild wanted to swap bad contracts as part of the Kessel-Zucker deal - Rask for Johnson. Staal was not good last year and it's a bit surprising that they extended him. Kaprisov wants to play in the NHL but will finish his contract overseas - he'll come over only in a year. They lack playmaking Cs. They have too many left wingers and are missing right wingers - no right shots save for Kunin. Spurgeon is a free agent in one year and it's not only about contract terms but also whether he believes the team can win. Lots of uncertainty. Will they even be able to attract free agents - looking at their recent moves do players/agents believe the Wild can have success under Fenton. The Wild used to beat teams with their speed because they were always 1st to the puck but now they look at times slow. The league is getting so much faster and so much more skilled. Work ethic, never quit, playing fast is the new mantra. Dump the puck and you might not be the ones coming up with it. There's also less time to take decisions and make plays - quick thinking, playing tape-to-tape are becoming more critical. If you are too slow or too sloppy the puck is going the other way. Moving towards more of a possession style of play does make sense. Evolving Wild summed up part of their challenges: -

Marner is getting ready to go offer sheet shopping - he wants a Matthews contract. Gaudreau got 6.8M. Tkachuk is going to blow that out of the water. Media is predicting as high as 10M for Laine. -

He was drafted as a winger. In Liiga from 2014/15 to 2015/16 - he only took 2 face-offs in 71 regular season games. -
And see Calgary get 4x high 1st round picks?

[Report] Leafs shopping Marleau
mll replied to Generational.EP40's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
At 1M the Sharks will find a spot for him. He hasn't decided yet whether he wants to continue to play or not. In the past he has said that he would like to finish his career in Davos - he trains there in the off-season. -
DeBoer says power-forwards need more time to develop. He was talking of Timo Meier who started figuring things out in the 2nd half of his draft+3. Virtanen is entering his draft+6. DeBoer says it's because of the added dimension of having both skills and physicality, and that it takes some time to combine both at this level. Laviolette made a similar comment about Forsberg. Forsberg started as a finesse player (26 goals/63pts his first season in his draft+3) but became a force by adding the physicality. It's not just that they can box their way to the net but they have the skills to make plays while under pressure.

The Wild are not in a rebuild and have every intention of making the playoffs next year. They are approaching their off-season with that mindset. This is Leopold's video message to season ticket holders at the TDL - he says their moves makes them a better, more ambitious team. He assures them that they are going to be aggressive in the off-season and spend right up to the cap. "Just so that we all understand this is not a rebuild. Look at our team. We are ready to play right now. We are building on the fly". At the 2:30 mark: https://youtu.be/fLFAGKX27kM Fenton said he only picked once for needs - Ryan Suter because they knew he would be a NHLer and desperately needed Ds. Otherwise it's BPA. They needed Cs more than anything the year they drafted Jones - but he dropped and he was their BPA. The year they took Fiala - they had no C1 or C2 but still picked a winger. Last year they took D Filip Johansson in the 1st round - he was projected to go in the 2nd/3rd round. Was Fenton's pick and not the choice of their scouts. Weird choice for BPA. In the video above Leopold names Kaprisov as part of their core. They have real high hopes for him. For now their projected top-9 is Fiala Donato Kunin ErikssonEk Greenway + Staal Parise Koivu and Zucker. Zucker on his way out, 3 veterans slowing down and 5 players 23 and under. Can't see how they will make the playoffs with that group. There's also no playmaking Cs. Kunin, Greenway and Donato are still waiver free to start the season so they could still end up in Iowa and their spots be filled by free agents. Anders Lee and Pavelski are rumoured to be off-season targets should they become available. Fenton is banking a lot on Fiala. He introduced him as a game breaker. He did add that it could be at both ends of the ice and hoping that it would be more in their favour. Fiala is really dynamic - lots of speed and skills. Doesn't really have someone to play with. He needs someone that can anticipate the plays he wants to make and be ready for his quick passes. He is still very inconsistent and pretty reckless with the risks he takes - he needs to mature and understand that sometimes less is more efficient. Fiala also never dumps the puck and it's creating confusion because they've never been that kind of team. -

Jake Dotchin came to camp some 30 pounds overweight last season - the Lightning tried to terminate his contract for material breach.
