  1. Wallstedt already has his NHL number reserved - they are that confident in him being their long term number 1. Gustavsson was forced to take a new number. It's also not like they can easily make room for a 5M contract. They are completely cap strapped next season + Fleury has a full NMC. There are too few players they are ready to move - Greenway and Goligoski might give them just enough room to complete their roster.
  2. Adding a player who doesn't seem the best fit is not going to make them a better team. Their speed is their competitive advantage and Boeser doesn't have speed. A powerforward vs a slow perimeter winger - seems like a rather easy choice. Meier brings elements they lack in their lineup and their top-6 is rather slight. He already has existing chemistry with Hischier and fits their age group. It will be tough to fit him and Bratt cap wise but maybe it will motivate both to take more reasonable deals given the team they are building there. Bratt could well find himself on the outs if he continues to ask for the moon - he refused to negotiate last season where he asked for more than Hughes on a long term deal and told NJD take it or leave it.
  3. LA is most certainly not going to cap dump Quick. That's no way to treat a legacy player after all he's done for their team. They'll just let him respectfully go to UFA. LeBrun doesn't even expect them to make a move for a goalie this TDL. One of the insiders covering the team thinks they will have a quiet TDL - too inconsistent and no cap space whether this year or for next year. They have too many players under contract next season and need to move some out to make room and find a solution for Petersen. Goalies don't really have that kind of high trade value and Demko has been having a particularly bad season. Demko also hasn't played since December with his injury extending well beyond the predicted 6 weeks. Last summer Seravalli had an executive telling him Vancouver should trade Demko because his injuries are going to catch up to him. If that's a widespread sentiment not sure there will be much of a return. It's also not all that evident to add goalies that late in the season. New goalie coach, new defensive system - goalies aren't just plug and play. Cf Fleury with Minnesota - took them well into this season to find their rhythm with him in net.
  4. Seems rather unrealistic. Can't imagine LA would trade the player they believe is going to replace Doughty. Not the same player but they think he can be their future D1.
  5. That's not a real rumour though but some fan wish. NJD are apparently in on Meier per Friedman with LeBrun saying Fitzgeral has a specific player in mind and then illustrates his article with a picture of Meier. NJD needs a finisher but they define their identity as pace and speed. Holtz can't get in the lineup because he doesn't have enough skating speed - replacing him with someone that's just as slow doesn't seem to make much sense. Fwiw Dreger thinks Boeser is more likely to be an off-season deal.
  6. Myers after his bonus payment. The return to trade him at 50% might off-set the cost to involve a 3rd team. Vancouver would then be able to clear his full cap hit without retaining. Armstrong in Arizona is certainly looking to leverage his cap space - he's looking for high draft picks. He did a recent podcast where he talked of how cap space had a lot of value right now. The cap could also continue to be tight with the Sinclair bankruptcy news. It's not just cap space but also the cost. Part of media believes that the Dickinson trade was because ownership didn't want to pay that kind of money in the AHL. Benning said the hardest discussion he had with ownership was waiving Gagner given his salary.
  7. It's the salary left to pay that mattered in those cases. Those teams had ample deadline cap space (a couple of teams will have over 80M this TDL) and rather than leave it unused they leveraged it to get an additional asset. Those were all expiring contracts while Boeser has term left. Teams can only retain on 3 contracts - giving up a slot for 2 more years is going to cost quite a bit because it's going to limit what those teams can do at subsequent TDLs if they are sellers. It's also considerably more salary than in those examples. You might want to check out this article.
  8. Dreger on Insider Trading says Canucks' sources are surprised by the trade speculation around Demko.
  9. Were they ever or was that another speculation of Vancouver media? Kekaleinen was pretty explicit when he said he's not trading the future for the now. Davidson, his boss who also oversaw NYR's rebuild, just gave an update of where they are as a franchise. He talks of how their objective was to be in the hunt late in the season (Ie not even making the playoffs just yet) but that injuries derailed their season and their team as a whole lost considerable development time. Gaudreau signed there knowing it's going to be a tough initial go as they wait on their young players to make progress - no different than Panarin signing in UFA shortly after they announced a rebuild.
  10. Friedman says the Canucks have identified their core - Miller, Pettersson, Hughes and Kuzmenko. He believes that they brought in Tocchet in part to help get the best out of Miller. It sounds like Rutherford sees Miller as a C but he needs some time to adjust to the position -probably why they felt okay moving on from Horvat. This was Rutherford earlier this year on Miller - I don't think it was just PR. To Kuzma in the Province: “It’s a work in progress,” Rutherford stressed. “Every time anybody tries to do anything, we want it done yesterday. But there’s a process. I’m not complaining about this, but there have been lot of line changes with J.T. at centre and then wing. “Just recently, before he got moved back to the wing, he centred a line and played against top lines and didn’t get scored on for three games. “He was very conscious and, sure, there are mistakes that are fixable. And he’s willing to do it. Sid (Sidney Crosby) has always been one of the great all-around players, but prior to winning back-to-back Cups (2016-17), his 200-foot game became responsible. “What players have a hard time understanding is they’ll get as many or more chances playing that way than by cheating. Once they understand it, the game becomes easier and they win more games. “But it’s hard to make that adjustment. It takes time and it could take a whole year.”
  11. Was to pay tribute to a future teammate in London - he passed away before they had the opportunity to meet in person. https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/courier-archive/news/both-bo-horvat-and-thatcher-demko-find-inspiration-in-ian-jenkins-3023627
  12. How draftees pan out - it's a much flatter curve than high 1st to mid-1st. Tampa looking at draft outcome.
  13. More likely for a pick than removing from their playing roster. Boston probably also doesn't want to risk upsetting what they have going with their group. Can't imagine they would have interest in Garland either. They don't have all that much cap space next season with the expected Pastrnak extension. They are more likely going to prioritise a C over a winger with Bergeron/Krejci soon needing to be replaced. Clifton is also UFA and Carlo is on a really good contract.
  14. They didn't want to trade Carlo for Horvat. Can't imagine they would for Garland.
  15. The Sharks sent a 3rd round pick to Tampa as part of the Goodrow trade. The difference between a late 1st and a 3rd is not that big. It's perceived differently but as to finding value it's much closer than the gap between a high 1st and a mid-1st.
  16. They didn't want to allow teams to talk extension with him so some teams like Carolina backed out. Not sure the pick would have been as high closer to the TDL.
  17. The Wild could be trading Addison - they don't have the cap space to extend him and they aren't sure he can learn how to play defence. He was drafted in 2018 by Pittsburgh when Allvin was their director of amateur scouting.
  18. Not a chance that LA trades for Boeser. They already have too many wingers + they already looked into Boeser and decided to pass to target Fiala instead.
  19. Barzal is the only F on their regular roster that is younger than Horvat (+ Wahlstrom who is injured). Too many ageing vets who aren't worth their deals anymore - Pageau, Bailey, Lee, Palmieri, etc already in their 30s with term left. Their top-3 is solid with Pullock, Pelech and Dobson and Sorokin is a top goalie but that's about it with Barzal.
  20. This might not be the end road with 5 weeks left to the TDL. It gives both sides the time to see if there's a fit and if not they can still move on.
  21. Teams might also add based on how much teams around them have improved to keep pace. Timo Meier is apparently NYR and NJD's top target with Toronto possibly also in the mix. The teams missing out on him could well turn to Horvat if he's not a fit in NYI.
  22. NYI doesn't have a good prospect pool and it just got weaker with them losing their top prospect. Their roster is ageing too. Not all that confident that they can really turn this thing around. Will Horvat really extend there when he knows there are other teams looking for Cs.
  23. He might be the one wanting out. There's been rumours earlier that a high profile player wants to move on. With how Rutherford kept on going on about how they got one of the most important pieces to contend in Demko, this would seem to suggest that it's not their decision.
