Can't see Horvat walk. They have 1 month to sign him or they can trade him further. Friedman wondered about NYI earlier today on his podcast. On an earlier podcast he said that Lamoriello told him years ago that you don't trade for rentals unless you are really positive this is your year. Doubt Lamoriello thinks NYI has a chance this season so the trade is likely in prevision for next season. NYI is 10th in their conference at 0.529 while Wildcard 2 is at .582. That's quite some ground to cover and NYI doesn't have games in hand.

[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Thatcher Demko
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
The Wild don't need goaltending. Wallstedt is already considered their future number 1. They are so confident in him that they've already reserved his NHL number. Gustavsson typically wears 30 but they've refused to give it to him because they are keeping it for Wallstedt. Demko hasn't had a great season. He's also coming back from injury where they initially projected he would be out 6 weeks - it's been now longer than that. Those teams don't have Ian Clarke - goalies don't often easily swap coaches. Doubt they manage to move him this TDL. -

[Waivers] Lane Pederson (claimed by Blue Jackets)
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
They had a 10-5-2 record while he was up in Vancouver or a .647 pt%. He didn't play their last 6 games in December where they went 5-1-0. In January in the 11 games before those 2 losses 5-4-2. -
NJD is probably not looking to weaken their roster but to reinforce it - Severson is more than likely going to be considered their own rental. There are strong rumours that they are going after Timo Meier per LeBrun/Friedman etc. Makes sense. Fitzgerald says they have too much of the same up front and Meier would give them a powerforward + he has already chemistry with Hischier. Also NJD is a fast paced and fast skating team and they always talk of the importance of their speed - hard to see Boeser fit there and at his cap hit when they are trying to extend Bratt.

2 games too many too. Waivers is whatever comes 1st between 30 days on the roster and 10 games played. He was brought up on 17 December and played game 9 on the 14th. His 10th game was a week later on 21 January which was also over 30 days on the roster. Dries was the F scratched that game. -
[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn
mll replied to Warhippy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
It's understandable that a lot of teams would like to add Schenn for the post-season. Are they viewing him as a lineup regular though or more as a solid depth add. He was a D7 for Tampa. Last TDL there were quite a few teams after Middleton as a defensive D at 725K who was even playing top-4 with Erik Karlsson and he went for a 5th round pick + Kakhonen who was a struggling backup at the time (still is). Tyler Motte had quite a bit of interest and he went for a 4th. -
[PGT] Columbus Blue Jackets at Vancouver Canucks | Jan. 27, 2023

It's not for cap reasons. They are in LTIR so they can't bank cap space. Unused cap space is lost in LTIR and they are in their bye-week. He makes the same salary in the AHL/NHL so it's not to save salary either. Abbotsford plays 5 games during the Canucks' bye-week - they probably wanted to send him down to play. -
[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
mll replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yzerman is not caving to Larkin's ask who is their captain and C1 and has been better than Horvat (save this season). Why would he pay Horvat if he's not willing to pay Larkin. Got to wonder if he too could end up on the trade block if they can't get a deal done by the TDL. -
They are the highest scoring team in the league. Can't see why they would be interested. They are better off using their cap space to improve more needed parts of their roster + they have promising RFAs due for raises when he'll still be on their books and who knows where the cap is going now with the Sinclair news.
-
Who knows how they would rule but I would expect them to stay as close as possible to the initial intent vs being focused on wording where they forgot that a player could be traded before his extension kicks in. Retaining the same rate over both contracts seems more in the spirit of the initial article where teams can't adjust the rates. It just happens that it's over 2 contracts rather than 1.

[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn
mll replied to Warhippy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
They gave up 2x 1st round picks + 2 prospects to get Hagel last off-season. Doubt they are looking to move him for a rental. Btw he has full banner treatment in Tampa alongside their core players. -
[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn

Cernak's extension hasn't even kicked in yet. Schenn was not a regular for Tampa - he's a depth add which teams need for a long run given the risk of injuries. Can't really see how that would make them better either. Cernak leaves a hole on D and Paul is C3. Horvat next season would likely want to play higher in the lineup which then creates an imbalance in their lines. Tampa also full in into analytics - they use it to identify who to add and build their roster. There's doubt whether his production is replicable just by shooting percentage alone. Only Edmonton has better PP than Tampa - can't see them disrupting it to fit Horvat either which is going to affect his production. He's looking to cash in too per Rutherford and his agent calls him a C1. BriseBois has repeatedly said that they need Cernak, Sergachev and Cirelli if they want to win another Cup - all 3 were extended on the very 1st day they were extension eligible for next season. They are core players along with Kucherov, Hedman, Vasy and Point. Tampa even considered moving Stamkos before them per Bob McKenzie. -
Yet they are re-tooling and are now apparently actively trying to move out veteran contracts. They've given bigger roles to their younger players over the season. Poile acknowledged that they aren't good enough to win with their current core and need their younger guys to take bigger roles. Poile has a list of objectives at the start of the season and will run through that list point by point at the end of the season before even taking questions. He talks of their re-tool to get younger. The McDonagh trade feels like the guy buying something from a door-to-door salesman. His agent came calling and somehow Poile thought it made sense to have 3 high minutes LDs - their D pipeline is rather empty and Fabbro hasn't developed into a top-4 D. It hasn't really worked and they are now trying to move out Ekholm (McDonagh has a NTC) along with other veteran contracts per Seravalli. Also doesn't work cap wise. That's why Fabbro is available. They can't pay him his QO and he's also not in their top-4. They need the cap space to extend their other RFAs and complete their roster. Nashville only has 13.5M in cap space with a roster of 13 next season with a cap increased by 1M. Using near 7M on Boeser would leave them with 6M for 9 players. Don't really see Boeser working out in Nashville either - skating but also the lack of grit/physicality. Nashville has become too slow over the years. Nashville is also directly affected by the Sinclair bankruptcy news and it's unclear how that will impact their spending + the cap could be affected league wide too given the number of teams hit by the news.

[Waivers] Lane Pederson (claimed by Blue Jackets)
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Only if the Canucks are the only team to put in a claim. The waiver priority order still applies if CBJ waives him and Vancouver could well get him back but can't send him directly to the AHL if there's another team that has also put in a claim. Boucher was waived by NJD and claimed by Nashville. Nashville put him back on waivers and he was claimed back by NJD. NJD wanted him in the AHL but couldn't send him there directly because a team behind them in the waiver priority order had also put in a claim. Vancouver claimed him when NJD put him back on waivers. -

The aim is for the player to stay in the NHL. If the Canucks are the only ones to put in a claim - they might win the waiver claim based on priority order but if there's another team that has put in a claim they can't send him to the AHL without putting him back on waivers. -
[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
mll replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He's a rental this season and the cap is already set. It's going to hurt revenue but owners/players will share the deficit. It's going forward the bigger issue where teams were projecting a cap increase in a year and depending on the loss and how quickly they find an alternative it could slow the cap increase. -
They are on the bubble and at risk of missing the playoffs. Seravalli even has them as sellers - says they want to move out veteran contracts. Poile probably looking to make hockey trades using their vets to get younger players. They are cap strapped next season. They also have several young players breaking out that are earning larger roles.

That affects directly half of the US teams - it's going to impact the whole league.
