[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
mll replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Nashville is completely cap strapped next season and are trying to get rid of some of their veteran contracts to open up roster spots for their younger players - the group is far too old and it's not working. Can't see why Vancouver would help them out when they are trying to clear their own cap headaches. -

LeBrun in The Athletic feels that the price for some of the big names will have to come down. Says there are quite a few big names available but not nearly as many teams either interested or able to buy. -

Friedman as well as Dhaliwal say Vancouver is not going to allow teams to talk to Horvat about an extension. Friedman explains that they feel they'll lose trade leverage if the agent gets involved. It's also the Bedard draft - can't see any team giving up a chance at getting him for Horvat. -

Doesn't make much sense for LA. They already have Kopitar and Danault anchored at C1/C2. Horvat would be C3 and hard to see him be a fit with Fiala. It's also a waste of assets when they need to fix their goaltending and the mix of their D-corps. -
(Discussion) Price for Quinn Hughes?
mll replied to Provost's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Winning is far better marketing than any other superficial gimmick. NJD already has one of the best D-corps in the league. They've been pretty much top-5 in all key defensive metrics. Can't really see why they would want to mess with that. Would expect them to use their assets to make more necessary changes than to try and fix something that isn't broken for the sake of a PR stunt. Adding Quinn Hughes would also box out Luke Hughes which kind of defeats the purpose. There's not enough minutes or a role to go around when they already have Hamilton as offensive D and PP QB. Fitzgerald also made it clear that they didn't pick Luke because he was Jack's brother but because they felt he was the best players available at that slot. Quinn doesn't even feel like a stylistic fit. NJD wants the puck with their Fs as quickly as possible and especially with Jack. Quinn is one of the Ds that handle the puck the most and has it on his stick often more than any Fs in the o-zone - even led the league in o-zone possession time in the past. NJD more of a rush team while Vancouver a cycle team. NJD has long mocked teams who think that hoarding talent is how you build a team - was already brought up under Shero. Fitzgerald was again repeating that this year and talking about how roster construction is like a puzzle where pieces have to fit together and explaining the importance of role players that need to complement their stars. There's only 1 puck and so many minutes to go around. He was also saying that the most important part is for everyone to have a role and be involved so that you get buy-in throughout the lineup. -

Tkachuk never gives up while Miller at times just stops playing. Maurice told Zito he'd have them play hard despite the projected adversity. During the divisional season Sat Shah said he had players telling him how Miller was the one trying to keep them upbeat and keep things going in the right direction. This season it seems like so much went the wrong way with management not trusting Boudreau. They extended Miller for a reason and wouldn't expect them to want to move on just yet especially now that they've brought in a coach they trust. The plan doesn't seem to have really changed either despite Rutherford now talking of major surgery, but it sounds like they are done with the patient waiting for contracts to expire and could force buyouts instead + looks like Horvat will be traded. -

Have to wonder if they won't buy out that contract. It's ugly but it would allow them to move on. Wouldn't expect Vancouver to try and move Miller. Friedman believes they targeted Tocchet in part because of Miller - they know Tocchet can handle personalities. He was even nicknamed the Kessel whisperer. Rutherford was also talking about how it takes time to move from wing to C + he hadn't been used consistently at C so it will take an adjustment period. Miller's outburst have made the rounds out East. The Delia incident but then also the different times where he just quits. Even Tocchet talks of how you can't give up even if you are upset when things go wrong - ie he noticed it and you'd think other teams have too. Lots of teams also believe that being able to stay even keeled and manage emotions is important for success and he hasn't really shown he can. -

Maurice recently revealed that Florida very well knew that this could be a transition season where they would be in tough to replicate last season when he was offered the job. Zito told him that they were going to face quite a bit of adversity this season given the changes they've made in the summer. Florida has too little cap space and too big of a hole on defence after moving Weegar. Would expect them to focus on fixing their D-corps and do something about their goalie situation before making changes up front. Adding Miller would just cap strap them and limit them to make more essential changes going into next season. -

Seattle is not in on Horvat anymore per Friedman in his 32 Thoughts podcast du jour. Says he's had some people telling him that they were never really seriously in. Things can change but right now Seattle is apparently not among the interested teams. -

The tweet is poorly formulated. Was an update on Demko's health - not about him being on the trade block. Carolina has Kochetkov who they just extended. He was their starter when Andersen was injured. With Andersen returning, he was sent back to the AHL because they don't want to carry 3 goalies and he's waiver free, but he might well be their starter next season. -

Buccigross is not really an insider. Seems more like speculation. Friedman on his 32 Thoughts podast du jour says Seattle are not in it anymore. He says there was dispute on whether Seattle had real interest with some people thinking they were never that serious. -

He should have enough interest to be able to decide what's more important to him. Given his comments on the playoffs I would expect that landing on a contending team is priority over breaking the bank but who knows. If he wants 9M - he better believe that he can play C1. Boston might take a step back by swapping Bergeron for Horvat but doubt Horvat would see it that way. You don't ask for that kind of money and think you can't play the role. -

In that same segment Friedman says it's not believed that the Canucks will allow teams to talk to Horvat. That's taking quite the risk for teams who are out of the playoffs and can't really waste assets if they want to take that next step. There's that 8th year but can that really compete with being C1 on an immediate contender even if only for 7 years. Horvat has repeatedly said he's fed up of missing the playoffs. Will he really take a gamble on a team that's at the cusp but not yet there. He also saw how that went in Vancouver where they thought they could compete after the bubble, and even from last season once Boudreau took over to this season. -
Rutherford expected them to be in the playoffs this season. He extended Miller, Boeser and signed Mikheyev in free agency - those aren't rebuilding moves. In his recent interview he's talking of re-tooling the roster and not a rebuild. They aren't even targeting draft picks but players further along. He talks of 26 and younger - that's not necessarily prospects on ELCs. He even talks of guys who have struggled on their ELCs and need a new chance. Those 5 others teams went into the season knowing they are in a rebuild - SJS on the fence but got confirmation this year.
-
Vancouver had different ambitions than these teams heading into the season and will have also a different one heading into next season. They want to make the playoffs. Changing coach now is to start working on the structure so to be ready for next season. All those 5 teams are in a rebuild. Arizona and Chicago even admitted to actively tanking ahead of the start of the season.

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
mll replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
LA is most certainly not trading Byfield - they've also shown so much patience with their young players eg Kempe, Vilardi who took years to break out. They went into a rebuild to get Byfield, Clarke etc - they are ear-marked as their next core. Kind of defeats the whole purpose of going into a rebuild if you trade them for win now players. Also given their needs it would be rather surprising if they divert assets to bring in Horvat when they have such a goaltending issue and their D-corps construction is a mess. They also are limited cap wise. Also why would Horvat want to sign with any team where he is immediately pegged at C3 - not that teams would even pay him the money he wants. It's known that Boston is going to have to replace Bergeron - why wouldn't he try to see if there's a fit there before taking a lesser role. -

Their issues are in goal and their D-corps so can't really see them going after Horvat considering the cost. If they spend on Horvat it makes it even harder for them to fix their real issues as they'll have less trade assets available. They don't have a real need up front. Byfield even had to move to wing so they could keep him in their top-9 and that's with Kalyiev and Moore injured. Doesn't feel like the right fit either. Kopitar is still their most used F and their C1. The nice line is carved in stone (save for injury). It leaves C3 to play with Fiala but Horvat doesn't seem like the right fit with him. If you listen to Gaudreau back in Minnesota and now Lizotte in LA - they say the same thing. Let him dictate the play - get him the puck and stay open and be ready to give it back quickly and make sure to cover defensively. That's not really Horvat who can drive play himself and not sure he would be strong enough defensively to cover for a gambler like Fiala to use McLellan's expression. -

LA doesn't need another RD though. They've been rumoured in on Chychrun forever but the cost is still far too high. They are apparently interested in Gavrikov per Friedman/LeBrun. -

LA has a pretty significant problem in net and the mix of their D-corps is wrong. LA is deep up front. When everyone is healthy they can't even fit everyone they want in their top-9 and will have to drop guys to the 4th line or even out of the lineup. Horvat is also not going to play ahead of Kopitar or Danault. The Danault line is the one line that McLellan refuses to touch - it's such a reliable and important line for them. Seems a bit of a waste to spend up front when their issues are elsewhere. -

If they invove a 3rd team they can trade him at 75% retained or a 1.375M cap hit. Horvat has a 5.5M cap hit but he is on a 4.45M salary. At the TDL he is only owed 1M in salary. In the past having a 3rd team pitch in for some 250K in salary was a 5th round pick (- free cap space is mostly irrelevant for teams out of the playoffs at that point in the season so they might as well use it). Toews and Kane are owed less salary (2.9M over the season vs 4.45M for Horvat) so involving a 3rd team is maybe cheaper but they would still have nearly twice the cap hit. There are only 3 retention spots available at all time + Boeser/Myers have term which is not ideal as they'll use up 2 spots beyond this season.

Guerin called it a fair trade in his post-trade presser and follow-up radio interview. He said he didn't see the need to wait till the draft or pitch teams against each other because it was fair value. He actually didn't allow other teams to pitch. He says LA was serious from the get go in wanting Fiala, so he shut down talks with other teams. Took 3 weeks to agree on the return as also confirmed by Blake. Fiala had then less than 24 hours to agree to a contract. Fitzgerald of NJD confirmed that the Wild were locked in with another team and they never got an opportunity to make a trade offer. Guerin had already explained earlier that it's really hard to make trades that once you have a trade partner you try and make it work. Says he's not looking to win trades but to make fair trades. His post-trade presser is probably still on their website. Guerin was mentored by Rutherford with Guerin saying the advice he got from him when he took the Wild job was to make fair trades or he won't be making many. -
