Why would NJD target Horvat though? Seems a high price to pay for someone that's not going to play ahead of Hischier/Hughes. Severson not even on the block for now - would even expect them to keep him as their own rental. He was scratched 1 game for accountability - made a play Ruff specifically forbid them to make and it cost them a point.

(Proposals) Horvat and Boeser trades
mll replied to CanuckFan1123's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Wouldn't expect Nashville to have interest in Boeser - grit and two-way play aren't really his attributes. Can't see Nashville moving Cody Glass either. Nashville is trying to re-tool to get younger. Glass has been receiving quite a bit of praise from Hynes lately. Notably credited him for their win over Edmonton where he was instrumental in shutting down McDavid/Draisaitl and again touched on his importance. It seems popular to send Horvat to Carolina but Canucks looking for a home run return and not sure Carolina will be the team willing to pay for it. They are already dominating right now and it looks like they will be getting Pacioretty back as their own rental. Their owner was very involved early on because he wanted to make sure they had the right process in place. He says paraphrased: 'you want to play hockey today but you also want to play tomorrow and the day after'. He doesn't want them to sacrifice their future for the now. Waddell also says that it's not worth spending too much at the TDL because ultimately only 1 team wins. Waddell also says he doesn't like handing out long term deals to players in their late 20s because you often end up paying for something you won't be getting. Peeke was signed to an extension that hasn't even kicked in. Last season no player had a larger negative scoring chance differential when on the ice than him in the entire NHL per the tracking company CSA. He's now been a healthy scratch. Maybe they are indeed looking to get out of that contract before it even starts but Vancouver probably shouldn't be the ones going after him. I am not sure CBJ would be looking for futures either. They have prospects and seem to be more looking for stop gaps till their prospects are ready to take on those roles. -
I don't see how they can be going for it. They don't have the goaltending and they've been really inconsistent. It would be short-sighted. LA talks of how you go from lottery team to playoff team to contender. They say the hard part is just starting - they need to confirm that they are a playoff team. Their D-corps is poorly constructed. They haven't yet figured out their lines past their 2nd line. That Danault line has been their 1 constant but they too have at times gone away from their identity. Fiala, their 8M addition doesn't seem to have much chemistry with Kopitar despite various tries and they have yet to figure out how to use him. It's been a roller-coaster of a season - they've talked so many times about needing to get back to playing LA Kings hockey only to go off track. Byfield was 1pt from ppg in the AHL (15pts including 9 goals in 16 games - Klimovich has 14pts in 24 games). He forced them to recall him. He was sent down because he had an illness with significant weight loss and had to get his conditioning back up and they left him there to play in all situations.

[Rumour] Senators shopping Nikita Zaitsev
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Assuming ownership accepts that Myers gets traded after his 5M bonus is paid - ie 1M left in salary for a 6M cap hit, they could use a 3rd team to try and trade him at 50% retained through that 3rd team. Myers at 3M should draw interest and could off-set the cost to involve a 3rd team for the retention. SJS got a 4th round pick for picking up 320K in salary in the Nick Foligno trade between CBJ and Toronto. How much would it cost to have a rebuilding team like Chicago or Arizona retain 500K in salary (and give up 3M in cap space) and what would be the return for Myers at 3M. -
Clarke is at the U20 - he's not even AHL eligible this season. Byfield just turned 20. It's too early to determine what they'll be. Byfield was always felt to be a longer term project. I like their structure going forward. They have a deep prospect pool and don't have any ugly veteran contracts other than Dougthy's but he's still their D1. Petersen's isn't looking good either but it's wait and see if he can regain his confidence in the AHL. All the other contracts seem moveable and none have excessive term. As for the Fiala trade it was an opportunity per Blake - he was saying that kind of player doesn't often become available and they didn't have anyone like him in their system. They were also explaining that he's 25 (now 26) and they'll have him for all his good years. Their head amateur scout doesn't even think he could have drafted a player like him with their pick. He says that even if he had 10x 19th overall he wouldn't be able to get a player that is top-10 at 5v5 (- he finished 5th over the 2022 calendar year). Faber admits that he always identified with the Wild even as a Kings' prospect. Feels like a cheap price and better use of that 1st round pick in a weak draft. Only 1 team will get Bedard. What if they do tank and then pick a player that doesn't pan out - Juolevi, Nolan Patrick, etc. Making players earn their keep and without blocking them seems like the better approach. It's also a long process. Vilardi is only now a lineup regular after being drafted in 2017. Not every player will step just right in. They have the time to develop them properly. They even sent Byfield down to the AHL for a stretch and gave Kupari the opportunity to play C to Fiala for a dozen games. Btw Sean Durzi was part of the return for the Muzzin trade which kicked off their rebuild - he only just played his 100th NHL game. He's only in his 2nd season and didn't even start on the NHL roster last season.

(Proposals) Horvat and Boeser trades
mll replied to CanuckFan1123's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
For Russo to be that categorical - that probably comes directly from Guerin. The 1-trick pony label he used on his podcast is likely from Guerin too. Russo thinks the world of Boeser - has been covering him well before he was drafted and is close with his family. Boeser doesn't even fit their lineup. Luckily for Boeser too. He would likely be endlessly compared to Fiala who Guerin said had to be traded for cap reasons. Boeser is not really close to being able to do what Fiala does and would likely suffer from the comparison especially when the salary difference is only 1M. -
What do you mean? I don't see how they've pulled the plug. Byfield, Clarke, Kaliyev etc are the guys they went into a rebuild to get - their era hasn't even yet begun. Clarke is at the U20 and Byfield is only 20. Getting new core players is only part of a rebuild - it's developing them to take over that's the bigger task. That happens over time. So many of their prospects are still waiver free and will gradually be taking on larger roles. They aren't really blocked by any unmovable veteran contracts other than Kopitar and Doughty - also Kopitar only has 1 year left although they will likely extend him if he wants to continue to play.

NJD is more of a "failed" re-tool that is now paying dividends than a rebuild. Shero was fired - the team was not having success so he lost his job. If they were in a rebuild the lack of success would have been expected. NJD too have impatient owners - there was even one of their owners complaining that they have picks/prospects to trade so there's really no reason for them to be out of the playoffs (Shero was fired shortly after). Just like Benning, Shero gave up multiple 2nd round pick to try and adjust their roster. Palmieri, Johansson, Mirco Mueller, Gusev and even Subban at his full 9M cap hit were all traded for using multiple picks including each time at least a 2nd round pick. Hall for Larssen and Vatanen for Henrique were hockey trades. They even traded for Grabner and Maroon at the TDL. They didn't give up 1st round picks though. Part of their re-tool was also setting up a structure for long term success which is the difference to Vancouver's approach. NJD worked on all fronts during their re-tool (culture, identity, synergy through the different departments, etc) and although they initially didn't have the expected success on the ice they still fixed other parts of their organisation which is now helping them as the on ice is starting to come together. NJD has an identity. They talked early of being a fast paced + fast skating - that speed has been a defining advantage this season. They identified their core and are constructing the roster around them. They tried to see if they could get deals with Hall, Palmieri but they were looking for long term so they moved on, although Hall was their MVP but he didn't fit the timeline of their core. Fitzgerald talks of how they have to be a draft and develop team for lasting success but they had to get to that structure - cf what they've done with their D-corps. Fitzgerald wants a big and suffocating defence and completely remodelled their D-corps in just 20 months. Severson is their lone drafted D among their regulars. Started with the Siegenthaler trade in April 2021 for only a 3rd round pick. Graves took a 2nd round pick that July. Hamilton was signed in free agency. This off-season they got Marino by trading futures and signed Smith in free agency. That's cap space and solid pro-scouting. They moved futures in those trades - that's not a rebuild but a re-tool to have a structure where they now have time to develop their younger players.

[Proposals] Boeser, Myers and Pearson traded
mll replied to BigTramFan's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
There's the salary floor to consider. Without Little they might have to keep Myers past the TDL to avoid falling below the salary floor. Kind of defeats the purpose of adding a UFA to sell off at the TDL if they end up being forced to keep him for cap reasons. The Little contract is not a negative in their case. The Ladd and Little contracts are helping Arizona reach the floor - they would be at less than 55M without them when the floor is at 61M. They also have to be sufficiently above to be able to sell their UFAs at the TDL. Ladd's 5M is expiring this year - wouldn't be surprising if they are looking to take on another LTIR contract. Arizona also trying to integrate prospects so LTIR contracts helps them reach the floor on the cheap without using up roster spots. Myers also has a 10 team no trade list. Would he really want to go to Arizona. Part of media believes that the Dickinson trade was salary motivated - would the Canucks even trade him once his bonus is paid or would they rather try before. If they do try and trade him after his bonus payment, then a team like Arizona, Chicago etc could act as intermediary to retain 50% (only 500K in salary) so he can be traded at a 3M cap hit. At 3M that could make him quite interesting to more competitive teams and the return should off-set the cost of involving a 3rd team. Fwiw Anaheim has Klingberg, Shattenkirk and Kulikov expiring this year - ie 3 veteran Ds. They work on an internal budget but still paid Klingberg 7M for 1-year to use him as trade bait at the TDL. They also took Kulikov's final year for future considerations (2.25M salary / cap hit). -
[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn

Doubt they ever considered trading Boeser at the TDL when they knew his father only had little time left. -

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks

Not according to Shannon who says he knows Rutherford well. Fwiw Burke earlier this season said Rutherford isn't built to rebuild - he's too impatient for that. -

Canucks/NJD not really good trade partners. Don't really see anything that would interest them. Skating speed is not the Canucks' forté. Quinn Hughes would box out Luke Hughes - there's not enough minutes / role to go around with Hamilton also in the mix as offensive D and PP QB. Doesn't fit either the big and suffocating defence that Fitzgerald says he wants. -

Draft picks more likely. Colorado also interested in Toews per Friedman. Chicago looking for a typical TDL return - might make Toews a better target than Horvat if the Canucks insist on roster players. -

NJD are constantly talking about how skating speed is an essential part of how they want to play - can't see how Boeser would ever keep up with them. Barzal says he doesn't think he's ever played a team that skates as fast as NJD. -

[Report] Canucks assign Nils Hoglander to Abbotsford
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Höglander is 2 games away from being waiver eligible - ie he can only play 1 more NHL game before requiring waivers to be sent to Abbotsford. Waivers is the earliest between games played and pro-seasons - it varies based on signing age. Given the shortened seasons his waiver eligibility kicks in after 143 games per CapFriendly and he's at 141. Next season he is no longer waiver free based on his signing age. -
Re-arranging seems like the right description. Rather than everyone for sale it's more everyone (save Pettersson) available in a hockey trade. Friedman on his podcast doesn't mention ownership but does say that management isn't looking to tear things down or to rebuild. They are aggressively looking to make hockey trades to try and change the mix of the team. They might take picks/prospects in a trade if it allows them to make another move. Probably something in the vein of the Hamonic/Dermott domino trade.

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
mll replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Vancouver are not a playoff team and don't look to have a plan. Vancouver looks to be spinning their wheels - not just on the ice but also all the side show. Horvat has repeatedly expressed his frustration about not being in the post-season - does he even want to stay. Surely he knows that Boston will be looking for a top-6 in the off-season. Detroit (his team growing up) is looking for someone to play tandem to Larkin. He'll have options as UFA. He's in the Tavares situation where there'll be enough interest for him to see around rather than already settle on a team now. If he really doesn't want to negotiate in season then it suggests that he's already accepted that he won't get that 8th year. -

Friedman with another update. - Canucks don't want to pay more than Miller but his season has probably put him over. Thinks they'll have another go at it. - With cap space so scarce around the league a trade is more likely to happen closer to the trade deadline. - Horvat made it clear that he prefers not to negotiate in season. The Canucks are free to come with offers but he doesn't think that Horvat's camp is going to be starting any talks before the summer. -
He cost them their last game so they simply scratched him for accountability. They are trying to implement the right culture where players are held accountable.

Wild are not interested in Boeser per Russo. Says they could have traded for him so many times and always passed. Says they think he's a 1 trick pony and doesn't really fit how they want to play. Guerin was also just on Russo's "straight form the source" podcast and said he's no longer really looking for a top-6 F. Hartman is returning this week + they've been winning games. He did throw out the standard 'if a move can make us better we'll look into it' but then talked of chemistry, the room etc.
