[PGT] Minnesota Wild at Vancouver Canucks | Dec. 10, 2022
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Demko played well above his contract last season - ie he was much better than just decent. This season the D-corps took a step further back - so he would need to play even higher than how he was playing last season. -

Not sure that would be sufficient. On D, other than Schenn and Dermott (who hasn't even been in the lineup), not a single one is worth his cap hit per their model. Myers even has negative value. -
Nashville is cap strapped. They had to waive Tolvanen because they need his cap space so they can recall league minimum Ds to replace their injured Ds. They could have just played 1 game short-handed. They are looking to trade Fabbro because his cap hit is too high - Myers costs even more than Fabbro. Josi-McDonagh/Ekholm-Carrier is their top-4.

Cap space issues due to injuries. More details here:

Peeke's extension hasn't even kicked in. Columbus weakness is their D-corps. LA already looked into Garland/Boeser and decided to pass to target Fiala instead. Also there's no room in their top-9. They are going to have to move out Fs in the off-season as their younger players become NHL ready and are no longer waiver free. LA also has limited cap space. They ended up signing Edler because they didn't have the cap to make another move to fix their LD. Whoever wrote that article didn't seem to bother to even do some basic research. -
Was explained that Friedman. See a few posts back.

Seattle is 10th in points percentage.

Friedman on his podcast says its a cap issue. Nashville has close to no cap space and have injuries on D (lost another 2 Ds this weekend) - they need his cap space to be able to recall players to replace their injured Ds. Says there's interest and expects him to get claimed.

The way Fitzgerald recaps how the trade went down - doubt any other team than NJD had an opening. Fitzgerald had already spoken with Hextall about Marino well before the TDL knowing that Pittsburgh would need to clear cap space in the off-season. Deals are so hard to make (probably even harder now with so little cap space available), that teams don't necessarily want to mess around and risk not being able to make a deal. They find a serious trade partner and try and make it work vs figuring out what every other team could offer and then risk teams pulling out because they found another deal elsewhere and/or weren't that seriously in on the player.

Byfield is only 20 - even younger than Podkolzin. He became AHL eligible only this season. Following an illness that caused weight loss they sent him down this season and have since left him down to develop and play big minutes in all situations. He is ppg with 14pts in 13 games (9 goals). He was always pegged as someone that will take some time to develop.

It's tampering with free agency. This is the segment on circumvention in the CBA - can lead to fines counting against the cap and/or the loss of draft picks. No Club or Club Actor, directly or indirectly, may: (i) enter into any agreements, promises, undertakings, representations, commitments, inducements, assurances of intent, or understandings of any kind, whether express, implied, oral or written, including without limitation, any SPC, Qualifying Offer, Offer Sheet or other transaction, or (ii) take or fail to take any action whatsoever, if either (i) or (ii) is intended to or has the effect of defeating or Circumventing the provisions of this Agreement or the intention of the parties as reflected by the provisions of this Agreement, including without limitation, provisions with respect to the financial and other reporting obligations of the Clubs and the League, Team Payroll Range, Player Compensation Cost Redistribution System, the Entry Level System and/or Free Agency.

I would expect Montreal to want to attach Price's LTIR contract assuming his career is indeed over. Hughes doesn't like being in LTIR and Price is drawing quite a bit of controversy which can't please Molson. Monahan is an upcoming UFA - they can get assets for him at the TDL and Boeser is a risk if he doesn't rebound with term left and a rather high AAV. Not sure where he fits in their lineup either as they are certainly not breaking up Caufield-Suzuki. Seravalli asked some GMs around the league - they peg his value around 5.5M and consider him pretty 1-dimensional. If they can get out of the Price contract at the same time maybe that makes it worth the risk. Is Dhaliwal speculating based on their interest back to the bubble year. It's not the same regime anymore and they are at a different stage of their cycle. The bubble season was still under Bergevin which he even references, but he's since been replaced by Hughes/Gorton. Montreal was also at a very different stage of their cycle with Price, Weber active and still had Danault. They had just signed Edmundson, Chiarot. Gallagher had 2x 30+ goal seasons. Lots has changed since that time. It's now the start of a new core with Caufield-Suzuki.

[PROPOSAL] Bo Horvat to Boston Bruins
mll replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I don't see them adjusting their roster that drastically when everything is going well. When there were rumours about Bergeron retiring there was noise that management had pegged Carlo as their next captain. Don't really see him as some odd piece they would just ship out. Schenn is slow and Boston will have to go through some pretty fast teams out East. I also wonder how teams value Horvat - goal scoring but rather limited playmaking and his D-game is questionable. He's also having an outlier season. His numbers don't feel sustainable especially under a tighter system and with a different role on the PP. Pastrnak is going to define what direction they go. Neely already admitted that he's given thoughts to rebuilding as their roster ages but for now priority is to develop and integrate more of their young players (was part of the reason Cassidy got fired where he prioritised vets). -
From Friedman's 21 Thoughts of the day: 2. Quote of the week: “We’d all like to make a (bleeping) trade,” one GM said, “But there’s no room to do it.” 3. Team I wonder about for Brock Boeser: Washington. This is a personal opinion, but I wonder if a Boeser-Anthony Mantha move makes any sense for both. The Capitals need a jolt, and, as GM Brian MacLellan said last weekend, can’t do anything financially lopsided until there’s clarity on Nicklas Backstrom’s availability. Mantha’s cap hit is slightly lower than Boeser’s, and he’s got one fewer year — which would appeal to Vancouver. Anyway, just an idea. 4. Obviously, the Canucks are a team to watch. I despise dealing in absolutes, because I’ve learned negotiations can change out of nowhere (see JT Miller), but it’s not trending well for a Bo Horvat extension. I suspect contenders eventually will be making strong offers for Luke Schenn, too. There’s too much to like about what he brings for $900,000. We’ll see where else it goes, and Jim Rutherford is not one to rush. He’ll let the market percolate until February, if necessary. (Trade deadline is March 3.)

[PROPOSAL] Bo Horvat to Boston Bruins
mll replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Why would Boston upset their roster when they are top of the league? Seems like the best way to mess things up. Horvat's camp surely knows that Boston will be looking for a C in the off-season and can sign with them then. -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Brock Boeser
mll replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Russo on his podcast again stated that the Wild won't be trading for Boeser. They think he's a 1-trick pony and won't fit their lineup. Posted the audio in the other thread. Guerin praises Russo for the accuracy of his reporting on the Wild. This past off-season Guerin got so irate over some fake rumour or stupid speculation that he threw out a "They are full of crap. They don't know anything." He went on to confirm that Russo is obviously not part of the "they" and knows what he's talking about. Not all in Minnesota have direct access to Guerin and/or the sources that Russo has. -
Russo on the possibility of Boeser to Minnesota: "It's not going to happen". For him to be that categorical he likely got it confirmed by the Wild directly. Short version: Doesn't fit cap wise even if Vancouver retains salary. Doesn't fit their lineup and how they play. The Wild don't like the player and/or don't think he'll fit their roster. The Wild feel he's a 1-trick pony and prone to injury. The audio version starts at the 47min mark (- 3 minutes earlier for their reaction to his near scratch on hockey fights cancer night). Russo says Boeser's agent Hankinson and Guerin are really tight and have made multiple deals, so you know they've already spoken. Says Guerin has been open that he's looking for a top-6 forward but they are looking for a rental pickup. Says Boeser is not going to fit cap wise even if the Canucks retain money - the exact same reasons they had to trade Fiala. Says that the Wild have long had the opportunity to acquire him but have not done it. This tells him that they maybe just don't like the player or feel that he won't fit on their roster. Says the Wild think that he's offensively gifted but that he might be a 1-trick pony (his expression). He's also heard from inside the organisation that they think he has a propensity of getting injured. He just doesn't see any chance for a trade to the Wild to happen. LaPanta, their play-by-play, doesn't think he would fit in their lineup. Russo and LaPanta go on to discuss that in the way the team plays and how Evason likes to deploy his lines, he's just not a fit. Russo then repeats that beyond cap space, it's also the player himself where the Wild don't think he's a fit for their team. He thinks the front office are asking themselves if he's not scoring what does he do.

Horvat is unlikely to want to extend there though. Their future looks rather unclear and they could be years from contending - their D-corps is not particularly good and so much is dependent on the development of their young players. -

Friedman thinks the Wild are only looking for a rental - cap issues next season. Like Fiala, Boeser has term so just replace his name in the tweet below (it's the coming 2 years the issue when their buyouts hit nearly 15M). I get the wanting to send Boeser back home but it's hard to see how he would succeed without someone setting him up. Boeser would be replacing Fiala on the Freddy Gaudreau-Boldy line (Kaprizov-Zuccarello are tied to the hip similar to the Sedins who Bowness even compares their chemistry to). If he can't make a similar impact at near same salary it might get pretty tough for Boeser like what's happening with Dumba. Beat writer Joe Smith says he's surprised by the amount of hate Dumba is getting - that tweet is also because a portion of the fanbase thinks it was the choice between Fiala or Dumba. Fiala was a formidable play driver and their offence at EV has taken a major hit. Guerin refused to sacrifice their depth (Greenway, Goligoski etc) to keep him. So if he does it now to add Boeser, who at just 1M less, would be playing on his former line, he will inevitably be compared to Fiala - I really don't see how the outcome will be favourable.
