The fact that this management group can't figure out how to turn the forum into a profit center for the team is beyond belief. I've been creating online sales, lead generation and business for 25 years and I know multi-million dollar corporations who would KILL to have a direct path to engage their consumers at the level this forum affords the team.

This decision shows a complete lack of imagination and understanding of how 21st century business works.

Whoever made this decision, needs to be fired as they don't understanding running an organization past the 80's.

    I don't visit Canucks.com, I come to https://forums.canucks.com and see what's happening.

From Forums, I can engage with all of you and I can choose to go to other parts of the Canucks.com site, including ticket sales and the NHL shop which is how they generate revenue.

I can access all other parts of the site from here, but the number of times I've just gone to Canucks.com in the last 5 years, I can probably count on one hand and it's probably similar for a lot of you. This is our central access to the team, the place where we rally from and talk and network as a group and a community, but this group doesn't understand that concept for one simple reason.

THEY CHOOSE NOT TO ENGAGE THEIR FANS WHERE THEY LIVE!

They shouldn't be shutting this down, they should be starting a section in here called GM's corner, where Allvin posts a video once a month, answering some prescreened questions posed there by fans. THAT IS ENGAGEMENT.

They should be running promotions directly to their fans, special opportunities that aren't available anywhere else. THAT IS ENGAGEMENT.

A part of a businesses 21st century valuation is how many people are visiting their site, their overall traffic count, page views etc. They just did a lot to undermine that, someone needs to make Aqualini aware of that concept and how it will, even at a low level devalue his asset.

You're absolutely right. Just like Yahoo search, back in the day. They left a ton of money on the table because no one knew how to monetize the business effectively.

Ugh, if he's suggesting the same possibility, or worse stating it as fact, I should delete all my posts on the subject

I'm just saying, we could all "speculate" about the potential negative implications of Hughes, Petey, Miller, ad nauseum. Where does it stop? It's out of our hands. Let's just hope they can build a winning team.

Maybe management is worried that Hughes might find some appeal playing with his brothers, even if Hughes hasn't made any comments to suggest that's his goal.  As we Canuck fans well know, brothers often enjoy playing together.

People can proactively help prevent something, even if it the threat is low.  Doesn't mean there has to be an overt problem to take some action to mitigate the risk.  But, if Hughes had ever stated it or if management only just perceived it, his leaving would be a problem.

I don't doubt his leadership, and I never claimed he wasn't worthy.  I only suggest that perhaps management is including his captaincy in the calculation as an added perk beyond what his leadership will bring.  It's also possible it never entered anyone's thought at all, and your last paragraph is completely right.

I'm not hanging my hat on anything here.  It was all just a spitball speculation I figured I'd share that might or easily might not have any merit.  If there's some halfwit journo up there making a similar claim, in an attempt to stir up crap, I'm totally unaware and am not trying to perpetuate it.

Without evidence, I honestly see no point in this way of thinking. It's an unhealthy paranoid thought process that belongs at the bottom of the ocean.

I agree. There's far too much of this overly suspicious type of thinking, not only on this board, but in the media, and life in general. Definitely not a healthy way to go through life. It's either people in need of attention, or people who have a poor outlook on life, period.

    Facts work.

I believe it was last year where one of the reporters or? asked him about the Captaincy, but it was clear that he was going to take the summer to think about it, and it looked like he wasn't comfortable with it. Does anyone else remember this and can recall the details better than I can?

  7. 2 hours ago, Kootenay Gold said:

The only reason I put him at a lower contract is in part due to so many others in my list are vastly overpaid which has inflated the true value of many of the more prolific players in the league. Much like Horvat's agent  thinking he was worth more that what was realistic; I don't see this management group willing to pay more than what they determine the players true worth.

That's why it's best that he doesn't sign his new contract until after this year. He's betting on himself to improve upon last year, and when he does, he's going to get paid and be worth every penny.

  8. 1 hour ago, -AJ- said:

I personally think he's easily worth $11M+ right now. Top 10 scorer with a good two-way game? He's probably a top 5 centre in the league. I'd put him above every single centre you listed there and likely by a considerably margin too. He scores more and is better defensively than most, if not all of those centres. When comparing other contracts, inflation also needs to be taken into account--a contract from years ago isn't the same dollar value as today, especially with the anticipated big increase in cap coming this summer.

I agree, and he's only beginning to come into his own. Last year wasn't a fluke. He's only going to get better.

From NYI? Dobson. Or walk. This wasn't a last minute deadline deal to unload a UFA asset.

Maybe it was the best offer on the table. Maybe PA actually targetted a smaller middle six winger he already had better versions of, and a prospect whose stock had fallen even before he was drafted. He does seem to like reclaimation projects. See Bear, Studnicka, Kravtsov, etc.

Virtually nobody liked the return from this trade when it occured, including some who have spoken up for it in this thread. Hindsight, and the subsequent Hronek aquisition, lend a different view. Beauvillier might be a solid player for us, Raty will likely become a useful player in the future. The 1st round pick is usually the prized asset coming back in these deals, and that 1st helped bring in Hronek. His future play and potential signing will determine the true value of the entire package from both trades.

For whatever reason people here want to downplay Horvat's value. Four straight 20+ goal seasons, 19 in the shortened season, 31 following that. On pace for 50+ at the time of the trade. Excellent on the dot, good on the powerplay, reasonable two way play. But he didn't punch people in the face and he had a loser mentality. It's all nonsense.

Player, prospect, and pick. Bottom line, Beauvillier is redundant, Raty is a low value prospect (almost?) every team passed on at the draft, and the 1st was needed (with the extra 2nd) to bring back the value Horvat was worth in the first place.

If that, and a long list of AHL and bottom of the roster signings, is impressive work for a newish GM, then I guess I'll be impressed.

Kuzmenko was a great piece of work, let's ask Mikheyev to be GM.

I'm not anti PA, or pro Benning, or any of that bs. I just find some of the reactions to PA's workings rather curious. Are we Canuck fans that used to disappointment?

@RWJC I don't know about EA NHL 23, but that trade didn't work in 22. Horvat didn't have the value...

    Then walk.

What's nonsense is... that's only your opinion. He was chosen Captain and wasn't leading by example. He's around the same size as Miller and can actually throw 'em down pretty good, but... I'd rather have Henrik than Bo leading the way. As far as GM, perhaps you should apply for the position.

And you say, virtually nobody liked the return of this deal. Really?

What do you realistically expect to get for Horvat?

    Dobson?

Carolina has a bigger winger surplus than we do.

According to Daily Faceoff they've got a player like Teravainen playing on the 4th line.

    https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/teams/carolina-hurricanes/line-combinations

Even if/ when the cap goes up we can't keep paying 6mill for a d- man who plays on the 3rd line.

    That's not good cap management.

Next year we are paying a player who is playing for Florida nearly the equivalent of Luke Shenns new salary to play for them

For 2 years after that we are paying him a mill under current Gavrikovs salary not to play for us.

And for 2 years after that we are paying him what in reality is what a team that manages their cap competently pays their third pairing d- man.

We have to start managing our cap properly.

That's what we're pretty much doing now with Myers. It's got to stop.

And like you say, this management has to get the salary cap under control.

Hughes' growth over the past year has been really impressive. He went from a guy I, and I'm sure most on here, would never have considered for captain to being the seeming frontrunner. I was very impressed with him at the end of last season and I think if chosen would be a good captain. He's well-spoken and can handle the media, stays level-headed and can calmly negotiate with the refs, and has clearly earned the respect of his teammates. He also seemed to become more vocal at the end of last season.

And last year he began transforming into "Thuggy Bear"!

While there wasn't a ton of talent on his team's, there was alot of heart.  Not to mention a ton of guys you'd want to be watching your back if you entered a dark alley.  Even Thomas Gradin was no creampuff.

True. That was a hard team to play against.

    Captain from 1979-1982.

The smooth-skating defenceman took over from Lever beginning in the 1979-80 season. He was only 22 years old at the time, but he was named captain for a team that was beginning to climb out of the NHL’s basement.

Perhaps he was a good luck charm for the Canucks, as they made the playoffs in each of his three seasons as captain. What wasn’t good luck was that he broke his ankle right before the Canucks’ Stanley Cup run in 1982. That allowed Stan Smyl to establish himself as the leader of the Canucks for years to come.

Let’s hope for everything but the broken ankle obviously.

    Can anyone name this captain?

    Kevin McCarthy.

He won’t. He doesn’t have what it takes to become a star in the NHL. He wants everything handed to him on a silver platter, but won’t put the work in. He just does not care.

This is why it’s easier to root for guys like Podkolzin and Hoglander. They’re doing whatever it takes to improve.

Well, who really knows? Some guys take longer. Nichkushkin is a prime example. At least the Canucks still have Kravtsov's NHL rights. Let's hope the kid figures it out.

On second thought, Myers is a decent option for the third pairing defenseman, especially under the tutelage of the present coaching staff. If they can get him to play to his strengths, of which his size is one, he'd be of value to the team.

Yeah exactly. There's no rush to move him, yet. Depending how the team plays and where we are in the standings come TDL. Plus, because of the fact he's playing for his next contract, has better coaching and should have a reduced role, I expect he'll be more of an asset this year, unlike last.

    To Canucks
    Jamie Drysdale

    To Ducks

Tyler Myers (Canucks retain some salary)
    3rd round 2024

    Why Ducks do this:
Jaime Drysdale was injured and only played 8 games last year (tore labrum).  He is RFA and still hasn't signed, so the Ducks are hesitant to offer him anything.  2 years ago, he got 32 points, but also a minus 26.  His future is uncertain, maybe better to get a draft pick.  Myers only has 1 year left, so he will be gone anyways.

    Why Canucks do this:
Get rid of Myers, who has no future with this team.  Jamie Drysdale is a wild card now because of his injuries.  But he was the 6th overall pick RHD from 2020 and still young.  Once we get rid of Myers, we have some cap space to sign him to a reasonable deal.

    https://www.capfriendly.com/players/jamie-drysdale

If you can pull that one off, I'm sure you'll find a job somewhere in the NHL as a GM. Nice one!

I don't think we're in a rush to move him now, let the trades come to us. Other teams will looking at a steal of a deal 1M, and if we retain 1 or 2M in cap. He's going to save alot of energy in a lesser role. And he's a beast I'm the playoffs. And he has better coaches now that can help him.

As much as he was a gong show last year, he's going to be playing for his next contract. And like you say, he's working with better coaches in a lesser role.

Depending if we're in a playoff position, trade him at the TDL.
