[Signing] Blue Jackets sign Johnny Gaudreau
poet replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
This situation is so funny. Instead of saying he wanted to just test free agency, he burned his bridge with Calgary…and then this is the only offer he got! I bet he wishes he was back in Calgary lol… -
[Discussion] Moving on from Jim Benning
poet replied to AV.'s topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Nothing wrong with being frustrated with Benning. He drafts really well, but his free agent signings were impatient and ill-advised. I do think, however, that he will likely just barely skate through and get out of the mess of his own making as those contracts expire. It might mean he’s going to have to do bridge deals with EP and QH, though. The real tragedy is that he will have wasted the prime of Bo’s career with the lousy contracts he’s handed out. -
Offer sheeting Cernak (Discussion/Proposal)
poet replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Do you remember this? Cuz I do. Imagine if we were subjected to offer sheets next year. Just don’t even consider it... -
[Signing] Golden Knights sign Alex Pietrangelo
poet replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Well, there it is. The dream of having Hughes and AP patrolling our blueline for close to a decade just ended... -
[Signing] Islanders sign Cory Schneider
poet replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Wow...I haven’t really followed his career since leaving the Canucks, but this seems like an unfortunate trajectory... -
[Signing] Canadiens sign Tyler Toffoli
poet replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He made the power play way more dangerous. Boeser just can’t handle that down-low position... I Would have been content with a Toffoli/ Vatanen signing as representing a small step back. Instead, we have...? Sure hope Jim has something up his sleeve: ie. something with Tampa for Johnson/Cernak... -

LW and next year? Or even the year after? -
[Signing] Canadiens sign Tyler Toffoli

Huh? This was our UFA. Jim had since Friday to get this done. Can’t imagine Bo is going to be super thrilled playing with LE and Pearson/Rousel for 2 years... -

Uh Jim...you awake? -
[Signing] Red Wings sign Troy Stecher
poet replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
What happened here? We couldn’t make this work for such a utility player? Have to think Jim SHOULD have a plan with only one legit RD in the lineup right now. Not looking good... -
[Signing] Blues sign Torey Krug
poet replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Pietrangelo is sitting there for the taking. I’d offer him the same deal as Krug. See if he takes it in a moment of weakness... -
[Signing] Flames sign Jacob Markstrom
poet replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Not really sure why he wanted to go to declining team. Oh well, a bit painful to let him walk, but we will be better off in the long run... -
Boeser + LE for Ottawa’s 5th overall. Then work whatever magic to pick Drysdale there. Resign Toffoli, as we gave up a lot to get him and he actually makes our powerplay better. This also frees up cash to resign Markstrom, in which case I’d flip Demko for a solid D prospect...like Dobson. Forget OEL...rebuild our D this way...

Few Saturday Morning Loui Trade Ideas [proposals]
poet replied to Whalespray's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I agree that the only way to shed salary is to offer a package with Jake. We can’t really take back salary, though...even if the Stralman idea is intriguing. Getting rid of Louie is going to be a really tough sell. Unfortunately, I think he plays out his contract here. Packaging Jake and Sutter, on the other hand, might generate a taker...Some teams might still see Sutter as a useful player: like Jake and Sutter to Ottawa for a 3rd? -
[Discussion] Off Season Moves Post-Playoffs
poet replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Here’s my team for next year. Virtanen gets packaged with Sutter (not enough between the ears...sorry kid). Stetcher walks. I like his game and heart, but he will want more. The tough decision is letting Markstrom walk, especially since he might end up in Edmonton or Calgary. Maybe trade his rights to an eastern team? After signing so many bad contracts Benning has some very hard decisions ahead, and we are going to lose players that we might like to keep. For instance, after next year there is no room for Edler... -
Love the way this team is shaping up. But man there are some bad contracts on the books. Jake has to be packaged with either Louie or Sutter. I hate to say it, but I think we have to cut Markstrom loose. Gives us a chance to resign Tanav (a must) and perhaps Toffoli. I think this team takes a step back until Podkolzin and Hoglander are ready...

Dallas for sure... Except...they will have lost 3 in a row at that point and be hungry for W’s...

The Canucks’ depth on RW and long term implications and strategies
poet replied to Patel Bure's topic in Canucks Talk
I know people hate the idea of trading Boeser, but something’s got to give. You need to look at Toffoli over Boeser as not just a straight up comparison, but as Toffoli plus a high end D prospect...not to mention the assets we gave up to get Toffoli. Given the fact that I’m also worried about his injury history, I’m fine if JB explores trade options for Boeser... -
The Canucks don’t have anyone on this list. And we won’t be a competitive playoff team until we do...
