  1. Didn't see that coming. He was unhappy with his ice time. Someone needs to tell him his ice time was going straight up over the next couple of years.
  2. Willie took a shot at Goldobin today? Said he needs to up the effort? Please send him for some Greening we need him down on the farm.
  3. http://www.cnyhomepage.com/sports/comets-faceoff-jake-virtanen/679411030 Interview with Jake (click on 2d and 3d videos of 4). Good question at 2:50 of part 3 and he handled it diplomatically.
  4. The other thing that might be worth looking at is creating power play opportunities. VIrtanen has done a lot of that lately (drawing penalties and not taking as many as he used to). The last few games he has been using his speed to break teams down. He has probably been our best forward when it comes to picking up the puck either in our end or just in the center zone and immediately putting the other team on its heels. A lot of times he will come down and rifle a shot from the dot area that is saved. It would be nice to see him driving the net a little more and maybe getting a good outside in move. Too often he settles for a fairly low % shot and he doesn't generate as many rebounds as maybe he should either. But a lot of times he is just outrunning his own line mates, going in alone.
  5. Good observation, I never really focused on this but since you posted this I realize how right you are. Makes it so much easier for D to break out if the goalie can pass the puck well.
  6. Kid is playing great. First professional shutout tonight for the Comets.
  7. Jake just drew another penalty, been doing that a lot lately
  8. Jake with a nice goal to give Comets lead 1-0.
  9. He looked very good last night until he got sick and withdrew for the third period. I would definitely not give up on the guy he looked like a man among boys out there last night. Once he gets some finish he is going to be an asset to the Canucks.
  10. Wish I could have gone to game tonight to see how he did. Sounds like it was a good one but PP going 1 for 6 isn't so hot I guess. He has the big righty shot on that unit like Ovechkin for the Caps. If he can produce something from there he will speed his trip to the bigs
  11. Holy cow who was that tonight! Fantastic game for Jake. Back checking (he picked the D pocket 3 times from behind), forechecking, carrying the puck. He just put his shoulder down and drove the net ala Horvat and the Pens had no answer. Their goalie had to come up big. He didn't settle for long shots from the dot, and when he needed to he mucked around in front of the net too. In the third period (and maybe part of second) Travis double shifted Jake, playing him with Bancks, Hamilton, and then two lines later with Kunyk and Pelletier. Zalewski didn't play much in the third period. Jakes conditioning is WAY up. He didn't drop off at all even with all the extra ice time and Travis had him out there for the last two minutes, and he has been playing on top PP. Another few weeks like this and he is headed straight back to Vancouver. Super encouraging for Virtanen fans. I think Travis is going to ride him now and put him out there for all the pressure shifts. I would bet a lot that in another few weeks with Travis' confidence in him, Jake is going to be flying as Comets overall are playing much better. Hopefully Labate can get back soon and when Hutton and Hansen come back we will probably see Larsen/Biega and Gaunce/Megna/Boucher? Adding three more quality pieces will give Jake some more help. Jake needs a little better care with his passing as he often just throws it too quickly into a crowd and hopes, but everything else tonight was NHL level all the way. That is the good thing about some time in the A. He can get a little better sense of when he can hold the puck and when he needs to just move it. He still isn't quite there in terms of controlling the puck, but skating wise he looked like a man among boys and the WBS team is very good. It was a very high paced, quality game. Both teams hit the pipe and their goalies had to come up big repeatedly. One of the best i've ever seen at the Aud. The Penguins Rowney won 5 out of 6 face-offs in the last 2 minutes after repeated icing to stave off any serious attempts on net.
  12. I guess so. Miller is so much better when he is fresh, and I have faith in Marky, but I think Friday's game is so critical you have to go with the vet who is coming off two very good performances.
  13. Does Miller get the start on Friday? Probably. Marky on Saturday.
  14. I've watched the replay of the weinerdog goal 10 times and Murphy had two steps and the angle on Bo, and he gets beat by 2 steps in a race from half ice. And forget the other defenseman. He gets beat by 5 steps from just over the red line. Bo waits and shifts into that extra gear after Murphy picks his angle. Not a ton of players out there who have that sense and that extra gear.
  15. Couldn't agree more. I don't get the criticism of Gudbranson. He is a consistent, physical presence on a team that is not known for bruising their opponents, and he has some upside. As the game is changing, he can probably drop a little weight and improve his quickness. With Stecher coming on you have to balance that with some beef. Tryamkin certainly fills that bill too but he needs more seasoning and does not play with the consistency of Gud.
  16. Can't agree with that. It's true he turned the wrong way once and it cost us, but he is a top skater. He gets up into the rush and back faster than anyone else in our D corps. That, along with maxing out his physicality, got him into the league. If he could get a shot going he would be getting more games and minutes. Makes sense to expose him in expansion of course.
  17. And I've noticed a lot of stick skill mistakes, which I don't remember seeing in the past either. Not horrible plays but as a pro and a smaller guy he just has to handle the puck when it comes to him.
  18. Biega caught Gaudreau from behind in 3d. Penalty, but he can skate
  19. second no brainer! Hansen on conditioning stint while you're feeling generous
  20. in that case send him back to Utica. No brainer of the week
  21. Gaunce has been good on the boards, has good face off, takeaway and hits numbers this year. He has even scrapped on occasion if memory serves. He dropped a little weight and his skating is improved but his offense is non existent right now, that is the issue. Chaput has played pretty well too and has probably given a bit more offensively so it is a toss up between them. The proof will be in what happens when Rodin comes up. Who gets sent back? Everybody has to pass through waivers I believe. Would you risk losing Gaunce in waivers? That would be a shame if that happens.
  22. good call, 4th line made you look smart against Tampa Bay tonight. I agree with this entirely particularly given the liability Sedins can be on D
  23. Good goal here by JV. He had a pretty good game tonight. https://streamable.com/lfg6
