Cody was doing quite well until the muscular disease he has (Malignant Hyperthermia) started to impact him. So not an injury, like Brock suffered, to impact his play but a debilitating disease.
A player who had all the physical gifts, and didn’t suffer a serious injury or have a debilitating disease that was craperolla was Virtanen. He is by far the most disappointing player we’ve had.

Jake never was much to this team.  He was never good enough.  Mess was such a great player and he just shit the bed so profoundly that he has to be the worst.

His defensive game has definitely improved. +/- is really a metric of both offense and defense as you've astutely pointed out, but his improving defense definitely helps keep the goals against while on the ice down. He's a very good defensive forward and if he can get his face-offs to a respectable level, I think he could be talked about in the Selke conversation if he keeps playing like he has this year.

He has always reminded me of  Pavel Datsyuk.

  3. Woo's whole game seems to have taken a big step forward this season.  He has played in all situations and has excelled.  I really think he has a good chance at being that 3rd pairing guy on the right side next season.  It shows we need to have patience with our young guys; especially with defencemen. B)

  4. Just a question for some with more knowledge than I have.  Is Pete's improvement in his +/- just a result of scoring more or has he improved his defensive game this year?  He was +1 last year and he is +16 this year.  Just curious. B)

Why are people comparing him to a Joe Sakic or Mike Bossy? The kid has slightly regressed from in his draft +1 season (injuries and mono would have played a part in that) and never had the credentials of a Bossy or Sakic. If the kid can put up a similar career as William Nylander we should consider that a huge win.

Isn't this his Draft +1 season?

That’s 4 goals and 4 assists for Woo in his last ten games… so far. Really taking advantage of the pp time since Wolanin was moved up. This is on top of his impressive physical play. Things could be very interesting at right D in the fall in Vancouver: hopefully led by a healthy Hronek, Bear, ?Myers?, Johansson, Juulsen, Burroughs, ?Poolman?, and now add Woo. The question marks are much more nebulous on the left side: Hughes is a lock, ?OEL?, ?Wolanin?, ?Dermott?, ??Jurmo??, ???Hirose???, ???Pettersson???, ???Kudryavtsev???.

Don't forget Rathbone on the left.  I just wish there was an easy way out of the OEL contract.  Getting rid of Myers and OEL would be ideal if at all possible.  It seems if we could do that, we would have no more anchor contracts weighing us down.

    Impressed.

I thought because of his inexperience and lack of size he would struggle, but he was really good for his 1st game. I think he makes Rathbone expendable.

I wouldn't say that after just one game. It is interesting that they are both the same age though.

No rush, he will get his shot.  No reason to interrupt any momentum he has right now to play a few minutes a game with the Canucks.  He will get a shot out of camp next year.  The fact that him, Hoglander and a few others are doin very well right now should not mean they get promoted, this is what the team is trying to avoid.

I haven't watched any Abby games for a few weeks, but one this is becoming pretty clear---the organization wants a structure in place that both teams will use.  Production or not, the ability to play in that structure will out weigh points.  Small sample, but these Abby guys--PDG, Wolanin, Breezer, Juulsen have been outstanding.

I have been watching the Abby games and have really enjoyed them especially this season.  I would agree that Breezer and Wolanin have been outstanding.  Breezer has shown a consistency in his game that he has not been evident before.  This level of consistency is the difference between playing in Vancouver and playing in Abbotsford.  Wolanin has been Abby's best player but I am not so sure about Juulsen.  I actually think that Jett Woo deserved a call up before Juulsen did this time around.  Jett has been playing well and I think his speed has improved enough to make him effective as a RD call up before Juulsen.

He had some enormous misses too. Virtanen over Ehlers/Nylander, Juolevi over Tkachuk. Judd Brackett was the head of scouting so he deserves a lot more of the credit, especially 2017 onward. He was hired by Gillis and promoted/fired by Benning so I guess I’ll give Benning credit for promoting him.

I actually think given Jim’s overall track record people are waaaaaaaay softer on him then they are/were in any GM in recent history. Especially our current management group.

He traded and downgraded more picks than he acquired for essentially one playoff appearance in a year we would have missed if not for the Covid shutdown.

The amount of truly awful signings. Eriksson, Beagle, Myers, Gagner, Roussel, Sbisa, Poolman, Holtby. Not signing Tanev & Toffoli and trading for Schmidt and re-signing Virtanen.

The OEL trade is likely the worst trade in franchise history. One low key underrated awful trade is the 2nd round pick & McCann for Gudbranson. We had DeBrincat ranked 13th who was available. Gudbranson was horrible then we signed him to a big contract because of sunk cost fallacy.

The fact he gets so much credit for drafting (I’ve read GMs really only are involved with top 10 picks) yet seemed to have zero ability to evaluate talent at the NHL level, giving enormous contracts to replacement level players, makes no sense.

Allvin & Rutherford have done an exceedingly better job thus far even if the results aren’t there yet. We are in a bind with some bad Benning contracts but I think with the addition if Hronek and a healthy Demko we actually have a good team.

I think it was a huge mistake to not have replaced Trevor Linden as Prez over Jimbo.  | think having a team approach (Prez and GM) is the better way of getting the job done most effectively.  I remember at the time wishing Jim had a President over him that had strengths where Jim was most weakest.  Rutherford was actually one of the guys I thought would have worked well with Jimbo.  I like what the guys are doing right now GM/PA and tthe Prez.  They have hit a balence that eluded Jimbo and his team.  Having a good, well balanced front office is huge and will go a long way in giving us the kind of results that seem to have been non existent here in Vancouver.

I think as an AGM he could add a lot of value. Just made to many big decisions that were in error.

to be fair I wonder what Aqua was telling him to do. Because this team should’ve rebuilt

Jimbo was the AGM of the team that beat us in 2011.  Considering who was the GM and what he went on to do in Edmonton, Jim had a major role in putting together that team in Boston.  Jim was better than some say and maybe less affective because of uncontrollable circumstances like bad luck in the lottery and having 1 prospect (Bo Horvat) coming from the previous management group. Make no dought about it, Jim couldn't negotiate his way out of a wet paper bag but when Button and Mackenzie on TSN say he is a good drafter, I would agree with them.  I think what you said about Aquaman yapping in his ear makes a lot of sense.

  11. How has our leading scorer on the farm (who is also a rookie) not gotten a shot on the big club yet?  In spite of not being fast enough apparently, he has been a solid winger that plays in all situations and in spite of his size, plays fearlessly with an edge.  He has even played a little center on the PK.  I don't get why he hasn't got a shot yet. B)

Karlsson's a winger. That's how he's been utilized. Don't be fooled by his stats pages.

Abbotsford had the Swedish House Mafia line of Hoglander-Aman-Karlsson who had chemistry together. I reckon that's a line we could see at the NHL level, especially considering all three of those guys are closer than the majority of our prospects.

McDonagh likely in the AHL next year.

The last few games Karlsson has been playing center especially on the pk.  Also, he is better than ok as a scorer.  He is leading all forwards in scoring all in his rookie year in the AHL.  I think he maybe better than some are giving him credit for. B)

  13. Sometimes it is hard to read our fan base.  First we hang on to bottom 6 guys too long and get nothing for them. Then its we don't have enough draft picks.  Now we are upset we traded a 4th line plug for a 4th round pick.  What is going to make everyone happy?  I am starting to think it is impossible to make everyone happy and I've always thought of myself as an optimist.  If the deal that is made that involves a draft pick, so what.  As long as its a fair deal and it helps the team, it has to be considered.  I liked the Hronik deal.  Yes we may have over paid a bit but it wasn't astronomical and we saved on the years of development and get a player that fits well with our core.  That's a win in my mind. B)

    Canucks get spanked.

Not watching. Losing interest in the team pretty quickly, interest is a two way street, they don't care, so getting the same back.

Pulling the boat out and polishing it up,

I am looking at it and it is like the Canucks neither move but the boat is a honest investment.

Check out Abby Canucks on AHLTV. B)

  15. Getting a quality RD was always going to cost us something of equal value (the same goes for any team). There just seems to be more LD out there than RD for some reason.  There is still time to make another trade or two.  Then there is the time leading up to the draft to make some more trades.  Our Prez is kinda' known for that.  Besides, we are drafting 1st over all this year and you know what that means. B)
