Seven years without a clear plan from Canucks brass.

All covid did is bring to surface the fact that their cap management was horrible. One might say, done without a long term plan! -

After 7 years one might think that even the most uneducated of us peasants might start to see an inkling of some sort of a plan? It is not like the fans haven't been patient. -

Every year they will make projections that may not become reality. They would only be keys to whether the plan would be successful or not. -

Just so that people understand why I did this thread. It is not a Jim Benning hate thread. Jim has made a lot of mistakes but he has also done a lot of good. I am one of those who thinks that the owners are playing a huge role in the team direction. Yes ,I think they meddle. I am suggesting that there has been no consistent plan over the last 7 years. There was no planned rebuild during the Sedin era. They acquired some high picks through those years because the team sucked. Even once we were told that we might be retooling they did things like trade prospects and picks for a rental like Toffoli. ( Guddy trade) I have no problem with Jimbo. I would like to see a quality president put in place. I would like to see a consistent plan of attack put into place for the next five years. I would like to feel that they are not flying by the seat of their pants. -
Ottawa has been playing better as of late. Teams with nothing to lose can cause a lot of damage. Hockey players don't just give in. We have seen the Canucks go on runs at the end of the season.

The fact that Demko has turned into a number one goal tender makes Holtby's 4.5 mil for next year a waist. Unfortunately hind sight is always 20/20. The good thing is that the cap issues are not fully solved until 2022/2023 season. That is the season that management should be preparing to load up. Get the kids signed next season and forward. Bring as many of the young low cost players into the fold next year. Players like Pod , OJ and Hog should be fixtures by the end of next season. Lind, Gad , Woo and Rathbone should get long looks. We may also get a fairly high draft pick this year. Maybe a player who is ready for the 2022 season. 2022/2023 use the extra cap space to carefully fill a few holes from the UFA market. -

I am about a cup not just a playoff win. Last year they missed out on assets from Markstrom and Tanev. Two players that would have brought a good return. This team is a ways from being ready for a cup run. I am not into a prayer and a wish. Things don't accidentally happen. Great things come from solid planning and execution. -

I don't see it as planning to lose. If the odds of making the playoffs are poor then you could say that the current roster needs adjusting. Throwing the same group out there night after night makes no sense. Who is to say that moving out a few expiring contracts and giving some youth a shot might not make the club better. Get a head start on next year. It is a shame that Utica is in Covid shutdown. There is a few bodies there that were starting to deserve a shot. The only players who are going to get moved are supporting cast. The young core group is not going anywhere. -

You also must ask how many of Jim's choices are tainted by ownership. If owners will not allow a complete rebuild then Jim must find another way. Hopefully owners have seen their mistake. We should be seven years into a rebuild when we are really only 3. -

The coach and players job is to give their all every game. No matter who is on the ice. Managements job is to build the team. Not just for this year but for the future. They need to make decision for the long term. They can't be worried about the players feelings. A big part of managing in todays NHL is cap management. The only way to keep their cap under control is to always have young players coming up from their system. Draft picks are the key to everything in todays NHL. Especially when you have some high paid young stars. You need to have cheaper talent to fill around them. Every time they let a player walk away without getting a return they shoot themselves in the foot. Management should be making a decision before every trade deadline what their "realistic" chances are to make the playoffs and then act accordingly. We have all seen what happens to a teams cap structure if you are building your bottom six with UFA's. Players like Petey , Hughes and others are going to want to get paid . They are also going to want to be surrounded by quality talent so they can win. Management needs to think about where we are going to be 3 years from now when these guys are at their peak. By planning ahead you are actually thinking of what is best for players. -

Would you move Schmidt for a prospect and a 1st? Not suggesting that I would. -

Because you need to trade him for an asset. -

I love my Xbox. My grand children play games on it and I use it to stream sports. LOL This topic of management that has been covered a lot. We all know that. I just thought it would be interesting to look at it from the lack of planning aspect. We can look back 7 years and get a clear picture of how Jim manages. I see a fly by the seat of your pants management style. This leaves a lot of missed opportunities. -

Last year they gave up assets to acquire Toffoli. Then they realized that they couldn't resign him. No cap space. What kind of plan was that? Are we deep enough to be giving up assets for ten games? -

I am also very happy with the small group of players that we have landed through the draft. My concern is that we landed them because many of the decisions Jim made didn't work. This put us into a better draft position. We got the high picks by default. The cap issues that we currently have will soon be in the rear view mirror and there will be a chance for a fresh start. We have some critical contacts coming up. They have decisions to make that will shape this club for the next ten years. Is this the management to make those decisions? -

It was getting a little boring on here. If you get your kicks out of spell checking , I am OK with that. I think the organizational plan starts with the owners. -

I agree that the club has drafted well under Jim. We all do. So is that the plan? Fumble through year after year with no direction? How many extra draft picks could have been acquired if there was an organized plan to maximize assets? -

This is how I see Jim Benning's tenor. Linden and Jim inherited an aging hockey club. One that had been on a win now agenda for several years in a row. Not only was the NHL product beginning to wane but their minor league system had been stripped to the bear bones . Most of the fan base expected them to announce a rebuild. To our surprise they instead went to the ufa market and continued with the win now agenda. After a decent season they were quickly and embarrassingly dispatched by the Flames. Season two fans were again prepared for the rebuild announcement. Even when asked directly about their plans they refused to even suggest the idea of a rebuild. Over the next few years they kept going back to the ufa market. Not once would they say the words rebuild. It was suggested that it would not be fair to put the twins through a rebuild. Not once did they come out and lay out a real plan. Once the twins retired you would think that would have triggered the club to use that opportunity to put forth a plan to rebuild the decimated organization. They sort of came out and hinted to a retool. LOL . Yet they continued to go back to the ufa market. They made deals for other teams left overs to try and fill what Jim called the 22 to 25 year old players that were missing from our system. They were making moves to try to skip doing a proper rebuild. We began to see a conflict develop between Linden and Benning. Linden was starting to lean toward a proper rebuild and Jim wanted to continue on with the build on the fly motto. Management showed their true colors by siding with Jim. Linden gets the boot. Jim Benning's lack of planning and cap management has got the club into cap issues and restricted the clubs ability to add any talent for this year and next. "That brings us to now". So what is the plan? Be active at trade deadline? Playoffs at all cost? This club has been lacking a real plan of attack for years. Maybe you see things differently. Please enlighten me.

Speed and mobility are what you build around in this new NHL. Hughes and Rathbone. Both think the game at a high level. Maybe they could find a way to land Luke Hughes.

Rebuild Starts now? (proposals) (Long read)

Ya, and when Hughes or Petey are in their late twenties or early thirties it might happen. At this point it would need to be a deal that is off the charts good. -

Sure, he could. Even Jim isn't that stupid. -

You do not trade a player like Petey or Hughes. Teams can wait 40 years and never land a player like Quin. You build around players like this. You find the right fit to offset their weaknesses. Petey , Hughes , Bo , Demko and Boeser. These are core guys. Players to build around. Miller , Schmidt , Myers , Motte and Hoglander are all keepers. Podkolzin looks like he has the potential to fill that power forward spot. Any player not on this list should dangled as trade bate.
