  1. If we trade up for Vilardi... Omg I'd be so happy.
  2. Would have loved getting Pettersson and Mittelstadt. Oh well. Surprised Vilardi hasn't been picked yet.
  3. Had a feeling Benning would take Pettersson. Pettersson and Dahlen should be fun. If Makar was there, would we have taken him? Pettersson could have been the guy he wanted all along.
  4. If we were targeting Pettersson we should have traded down.
  5. Glad Dallas took Heiskanen. Have a feeling Avs will take Vilardi.
  6. Stoked the Devils took Hischier. Now let's see if Patrick drops.
  7. Second favourite team. Although I'm still bitter the Canucks are picking 5th instead of 1st or 2nd.
  8. Hoping for Vilardi and Mittelstadt (or both), but if we pick Makar, Glass, or Pettersson I'll be happy.
  9. That's kind of what I'm thinking. It's concerning that he had a poor combine, but if his commitment to being a professional hockey player is not a problem, then he could be great. Going to college, he'll have time to hit the gym during the season, and if he dedicates himself--as he should--it would pay dividends on the ice. His compete level on the ice is not thought to be a problem, but his overall dedication to his craft very well could be. It's up to Benning and Linden to glean whether he has drive to be the best he can be. If he falls to #7 or #8 because of his combine, I'd be ecstatic if we traded to get him. He fits the "speed and skill" mantra well.
  10. If Makar is still there at 5, I think it's likely Benning will take him. Hopefully he can move back into the top 10, and pick a remaining center--possibly Pettersson or Mittelstadt. I'd be very happy with that outcome.
  11. Mittelstadt's actually known for his compete level. He may have had a lackluster combine, but on the ice he's a very hard worker. Bigger players don't phase him and he's very good at shielding the puck and moving it up the ice. If he gets stronger and more athletic he could be really good, as he already has the smarts and puck skills. I think he fits the team Benning is building, and would be very happy if we picked him.
  12. If we are indeed looking for "speed and skill" I think we'll take Makar, Mittelstadt, or Pettersson. Two out of the three if we get another top 10 pick would be amazing.
  13. Because Dallas might want to unload a goalie (Lehtonen or Niemi) and their cap for Tanev.
  14. I love the idea of picking two centers, but would prefer us taking Vilardi and Mittelstadt. Both can play center or wing, and have great puck skills - an area Glass is quite vanilla in. Mittelstadt fits the North-South team JB is building, with good speed, and an elite transition game. Taking a safe pick in Vilardi allows us to take a risk on an offensive dynamo like Mittelstadt.

    Olli Juolevi | #48 | D

Yeah I hope Vilardi is still there at our pick. He kind of reminds me of Horvat, but shoots right instead of left. Their difference in handedness lends some strategic advantages as far as taking faceoffs, and we could put both guys out in any situation.

    Olli Juolevi | #48 | D

Who do you guys think would be the best chess pieces to have around Juolevi from the 2017 draft? I think Makar, Vilardi, and Mittelstadt would support his playstyle very well. Makar is a right hand shot who could pair with Juolevi. His roving ability would go nice with Juolevi's calculated decisiveness. Both defensemen are good puckmovers, but Makar is more of a driver of offense, whereas Juolevi is a stalwart at defense, meaning they theoretically fit together quite well. In comparison, Heiskanen would probably play on a different pairing, as he also plays on the left side. Vilardi is a dangerous 2way center who uses his size to play a possession game. His ability to play on the left wall and cycle back to the defensemen, or power to the net, keeps the other team guessing, which could go great with Juolevi's puck support and sniping ability. Mittelstadt could be deadly on the powerplay with Juolevi (and Makar), boasting good speed and creativity with the puck. In addition, his elite transition game would go well with Juolevi's puckmoving ability. However, his defense raises a lot of questions, and much of his points come on the powerplay, meaning he might not accentuate Juolevi's main strength--affecting all phases of the game, whether on the powerplay, even strength, or on the penalty kill. I think it's important for us to build around some of the young players we already have, and there's no better cornerstone than last year's first round pick.
  17. I don't think Virtanen was a PR move. I think Linden saw what happened with Neely first hand and saw a lot of the same things with Jake. I think JB liked his North South style with a hard shot and physicality. Him being a local boy just meant that he wanted to play for the Canucks, which is good. I wanted Ehlers, but when we picked Virtanen I was like "okay" cause I viewed him as a safer pick. I think Vilardi is a safe pick this year, but if we get another pick that gives us an opportunity to draft someone with more risk like Makar or Mittelstadt as well.
  18. nhl.com has posted new mock drafts: https://www.nhl.com/news/mike-morreale-second-nhl-mock-draft-projections-2017/c-289750810?tid=277764372 https://www.nhl.com/news/second-nhl-mock-draft-adam-kimelman-projections-2017/c-289750808?tid=277764372 https://www.nhl.com/news/guillame-lepage-second-mock-2017-nhl-draft-projections/c-289753990?tid=277764372 Two out of the three have us taking Mittelstadt, and one has us taking Vilardi.
  19. If we get the 3rd without giving up 5 I hope we get Vilardi and Mittelstadt. They both can play wing or center so it's not redundant.
