What a shame Kenins was…shoulder injuries are a death sentence for guys who play that way…which is why I worry about Will Lockwood as well. He’s a great hitter but to small to be throwing his body around like that every game…he’s at least got some defensive chops that he can rely on. His speed and puck hounding ability can still thrive and he can save his shoulders for a longer career…one hopes. He gives me honey badger vibes. Back to JV, so ends his NHL story…had his chances and blew them. Wish him well going forward, maybe he will grow up and learn from all this.

[Waivers] 14 players - Oct. 07, 2022
Attila Umbrus replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Seems like a low risk add. His AHL numbers are solid. Probably a tweener but in his VERY small NHL experience he hasn’t sunk. No points, plus 1 last season in 4 games. Never seen him play tho so maybe foot speed is an issue?? May just be getter to call up Juulsen instead -
Gotta love those F bombs from Bruce lol. I dunno he just has a way with players and can give tough love with out giving that Torts vibe. Agree, Yeo does have staying power and obviously has a good mind for the game. Most of my experience is from watching him during live games on nhl center ice. I’ve never seen any dressing room rants etc from him. Just watching him on the bench and seeing his reactions. Obviously one can write their own story when doing that as you’re not in the game or near the bench. I like to watch coaches and player reactions…for whatever reason that is. Take Gallant in NY, he has a very intense attitude behind the bench. But I love it, he’s like a general going to war with his boys. Gets his troop up to the task. Cooper in Tampa, is a cool headed tactician. His guys always trust his moves and decisions. You then watch a Torts team and half the bench looks deflated or pissed off or miserable. It’s a big difference. You could see that in our team last year with Green too, team tuned him out. Those are the unfortunate vibes I get from Yeo as a head coach. But he is not a head coach and like you said spent a significant time in Pitts as assistant. So he could be a great asset in that regard.
-
I hope you’re right. He obviously has the chops to stay in the big league…He just always seems to have a short shelf life with any of his teams before us which gives me worry. I have nothing concrete to give, just my gut feeling…which is worth…not much lol. All I do know is he can get pretty heated at times and I wonder how effective that is anymore. New generation of players don’t take well to that kind of approach. Once again, just my opinion.
-
I wouldn’t use the word angry googlie…frustrated would be better. And honestly nothing FA could do about it either so from my point my frustration isn’t pointed at him, just in general…with the JV stuff over summer too…canuck luck comes to mind, so shouldn’t be too surprised lol. I then calm myself down at that point, breath deep and say to myself…at least i’m not an Arizona fan…

I’m frustrated too, not gonna lie. Tired of seeing a never ending stream of losing years. I think you can say that for everyone here. This forum used to be a way happier place back in the day when the Sedins we’re playing. Still gonna try to stay positive I’ll always cheer for this team through thick and thin.
-
Still a distraction and it sucks that it’s happening. You are right, I’m sure the players will all be professional and play through it. All I’m saying is that it would be in my mind and it would bother me playing for a person like that if any of it is true. We’re only human after all. We have a lot of players with families…look at the Aqua thread itself and how many divided opinions there are on the subject…yet our the players on our team are exempt from feeling any of that? Just terrible timing for that kinda news to come out. Honestly hope I’m wrong, will see how the boys come out for the regular season.
-
That about sums it up eh. But I still see some major concerns defensively. Hopefully it gets cleaned up next game. Gotta wonder if this team is having issues with the allegations against Aqua. If I were playing for the team it would be in the back of my mind…who the hell am I playing for??…Unfortunately whether true or not this could really put a damper on the start of our season until things become more clear thru the courts.
-
Cheers, I will do my best. Googlie is also a good source for updates, I think he watches every game like I do. Between the both of us, plus others hopefully we get a decent picture of our prospects in the A.

Injuries have really set him back. And yes he definitely has been a slow learner. But he does still have some talent and raw physical attributes that leave you wondering if he puts it all together he can make an impact…I’m still putting him in a “salvageable” category. Got my AHL live ready to go this season again. Will be watching him closely, hoping for a strong one from him. Hard to say tho, I’ve seen lots of highly touted draft picks hit the AHL only to get swallowed up by it…then off to Europe they go…I’d say Woo has this season and next to prove himself and then as in the wise words of Alflives, he’s a “bustaroo”

I still think he’s worth it to sign. I bet if Alex chose to sign a two way deal they would offer him something, would not be a terrible situation for him. He would be great for the kids in Abby if he gets sent down. Obviously Alex is going to try and earn a one way contract first but I think management will just sit on this one till he signs a two way deal. I really don’t want to see him walk, I’m very intrigued if he can continue his chemistry with JT. At the end of the season those two were on fire together. Worth the gamble I think. Both JT and Alex say they complemented each other well. Have similar playing styles.

It worked for me, I was raised in Dawson Creek. Bought my first house when I was 20 for 60 K, bought a few more, rented and flipped them. Moved to Victoria a decade later and bought a few more places…it does work. However those times have changed now. 150 k gets you a house that is barely standing…but for 250 k you will get something solid. LOL, easy PB…you’re starting to hurt my feelings……it’s ok I’ll get over it with the money I made in real estate in Dawson.

[Signing] Canucks re-sign J.T. Miller
Attila Umbrus replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Actually that's something that has not dawned on me yet. Schenn could work out amazingly with him. I just had him penciled by Hughes...but it's perhaps time for Huggy to move on from Schenns protection, I think this talk of pairing him with OEL on his right side, or even Hughes on his off side could work out very well. I also would love to see Hughes and Rathbone on the PP together in pre season, just to see what they can cook up together. -

Thanks, this is well explained AV. I understand your position in all this now firmly. You have some great points. We are at where we are at now and need to move forward. There is still retooling needed to be done, there will be contract hang ups, but I have faith that this will turn out in our favor. We have a very experienced head office now and I think that will pay off going through these tough waters in how to become a true cup champion. I agree the "just make the playoffs" mentality is a cover up for a poor team trying to over aspire. However, you can't argue some of that mantra does hold true. It's worked for teams in the past, I always think of LA's 8th seed storm to the cup as a great example. Yes LA became a power house of their own, but it all started with the mantra of "anything can happen" if you make it to the dance...from there they built themselves beyond that point and into the contenders they eventually become and won a second cup 2 years later again. I guess my point is that it is okay to have that mantra to start, but as you alluded to you can't just keep staying in that zone if you want to be true perennial cup contenders. That's the next big challenge after that. I look to Tampa, Chicago, and Pittsburgh for those models and how they built themselves past that point. IMO we have a 2 year window with the contracts we have to perform to those expectations, make the playoffs, see what happens, make some noise hopefully. Will see how it all pans out. We definitely need to shore that defense up but it''s serviceable for now, and we have a bit of time to re-tool it. As you said, it's all gotta go right...but I so far have liked JR and companies "cool hand" approach on what to do next. I actually feel there is a solid plan starting to take place, where as Benning's regime we seen a less confident front office group, getting bossed around in trades and such. I did not like that...Hello Hamhuis. I actually feel like under this regime we won't lose our assets for nothing anymore. Refreshing. -

I'm really hoping Rathbone makes the team and shows everyone what he can do. But I have to keep telling myself to temper my expectations on him. Last year was great, but injury riddled for him. I want to see how well his awareness in the dzone has improved this off season. With time and space his vision is through the charts, but has a habit of getting over pressured if he gets caught in his own end. Where Hughes has no rattle to him under pressure at all. Really looking forward to him hitting the ice this year. Whether he is in the AHL or NHL I just hope he stays healthy and has a FULL season of development. -

Definitely not saying you called it a dumpster fire. By no means was that directed at anything you said, that was me generalizing what I feel is a lot of people on CDC's issue with our defense is, which I brought up in my first post. As for destroying the chance of the team. That's the way it sounded to me when you talk about JT's contract causing all sorts of issues down the line for us. Apologize if that's not what you meant. I don't disagree paying JT 8 M won't make things more difficult. But I respectfully think it was the right move to do. With the young guys we have we need to make a statement that we want to win and put our best effort forward. Letting JT go no matter what reflects in my opinion a different direction...then we go into another rebuild/retool again? Try to rebuild another team identity...eventually this cycle needs to stop and the young players we have developed need to take a step forward, delaying this process and dragging it out another 2 or so years will not be beneficial in my mind. All the guys on this team want to win now, not tomorrow. I guess we can at least agree that no matter what, this the team going forward and it's anyones guess as how it's gonna really go lol. I really do hope this group can keep building and proving to us they are the team they say they are...I am so tired of "rebuilding" hockey...seems like 2011 was so long ago now. All my years of being a Canucks fan we have lost so much and won so little, so the idea of a step back right now is un appealing to me, whether that is right or not. -

Fair points, but as you mentioned there are assets we can move out no problem to make adjustments as needed and fit under the cap accordingly. I don't agree that it completely destroys the chance of this team still getting better and building from this point moving on forward. Of course there are players in need of resigning and pay raises come with all that, but it still can be adjusted and made to fit. I'd have a bigger issue with the JT signing if we were stuck with a bunch of hard to move contracts but aside from OEL we don't have much. Myers whether we hate his contract or not is due to be a UFA very soon, so no sweat in my mind. I still think this a very buildable and moldable team going forward, we may like you said have to part with a Garland or Boeser, but if that gets you better balance through the line up then i'm all for the move. I agree defense is our largest issue at hand, but it's not a dumpster fire either. I see this team as assembled right now as a playoff team, if it all goes south this year, trade whoever you need to and capitalize on the tradeable assets you have and move forward with the season. I just don't see any stumbling blocks here. Just forward progression. -

I have to say the cap space argument has me a bit perplexed. I look at our projected cap space going forward after this season and we seem to have enough to sign everyone and keep moving forward. I don't see JT's contract being a hinderance at all. By all accounts we will be seeing a substantial increase to the cap in the next couple seasons as per the release from Daly. I have faith that JR has accounted for all those such things. Coincidentally this signing comes just over a week from Bill Daly announcing the cap increase projections. My gut tells me JR thinks he can squeeze it all in going forward. There will be some minor adjustments but this is our team going forward like it or not. I for one am super excited! I can't think of many teams out there that have the center depth we do. Goaltending will come down to Demko staying healthy and Martin providing steady back up. Our Defense isn't as bad as we think IMO, definitely room for improvement but I think it will be achievable. We need to build around and support Hughes, and that can be done without trading away too much asset. This team will surprise us I think. Their identity is starting to take form, they play hard for each other, and they all really believe they have something special there. JT could have signed anywhere he wanted. He has seen what Tampa has done with out him since he left, he knows it well since he played there after all. I'm gonna trust JT on this one, he sees something in this group and is willing to sign up long term to bring this club a cup. What is not to like in all this?? Am I wrong?? I just don't see this cap hell issue lots are talking about here?? Plus if all goes to shit we can trade JT before trade deadline this season since his no trade clause kicks in next summer. So for you cap hellists, isn't that a piece of good contract work? There is a way out and we can get a crap load of return back as i'm sure JT will still be worth his contract this season at the very least. You will find lots of takers to take him on at 8 M per season. In any case I think we win. We don't lose JT for nothing, we either get a bonafide top center who puts us one step further at cup contention, or we get a massive trade haul for him this trade deadline...win/win I say. Lets get this season goin!!
