  1. Actually didn't even think about this. I hope you're right. Would be nice to off load him. I don't mind the guy at all but it obviously hasn't worked out and it's time to let one of the young guys take his spot.
  2. And the fact the forward they wanted (Dubois) was taken ahead of them by Columbus. Dubois was their first choice, Joulevi their 2nd. But imagine for a second we got Dubois that year...would we have drafted Pettersson? Canucks were high on Dubois because they seen him as a centerman in the NHL. That would have absolutely changed our draft plan going forward if we did draft him.
  3. He's been great positionally and like you said tough around the crease. I actually think he's stronger than Guddy in that department. Guddy would battle infront of the net and always loose his man. Schenn just physically over powers guys in front and they can't break clean from him. Also behind the net he can block guys off effectively as well. Plus his quick puck movement and simple passing has really been a surprise. His foot speed is slow but he is playing sound positionally and is aware of the threats he needs to eliminate on the ice, so never seems to get caught letting players fly by him ala Guddy. I'm all for re-signing the big guy!
  4. Utica has been great at developing the lower level talent that has been given to them. Gaunce, Sautner, Marky, Baertchi, MacEwan, Brisbois, Demko. Not a lot of sexy names but they have all turned out to be very good pro players developed by Utica. Heck even by extension Boucher and Kero having career AHL seasons this year is also something to add to the development list. Where would the team be with out those 2 guys this year? I just wish we could have beefed up the center position this year. But all our up and coming centermen are either in the NHL or NCAA. And we don't really have any other up and coming center prospects in the fold other than the Karlsson kid we traded Dahlen for...and who knows if he joins the team next year? I can see the Canucks drafting a couple centers this year at the draft. Centermen and wingers to be exact. We have a bunch of Dmen that are showing good promise, so I think we're good there. Our goalie situation is ok for now. Hopefully DiPietro does well next year. This years draft hopefully they will focus on the forward gaps we have in our system. Maybe with a focus on players from Europe or USHL that are closer to "pro" ready and aren't bound by the CHL agreement or going to college...but more likely they will keep plugging the forward ranks with AHL contracted vets...
  5. I'm not arguing timeline, just that it is what it is. We traded picks in the first 2 years to flesh out a roster at the NHL level with higher end AHL talent ala Baertchi and Vey. Not all panned out obviously. But you can see that those first 2 years hurt Utica in the sense that no fresh bodies were coming in, the ones that did early went to the NHL...Brock, Jake, and McCann. So that brings us to year 3, which we are now seeing the natural cycle of young talent ageing out of the CHL and joining the pro ranks. A lot of our other talent is in the NCAA.. In the mean time they have been trying to plug holes and get by on the farm. I'm not waging into the argument of whether we should have a better farm team by now, too much noise with all that...but if you look at the reasons why it makes sense at least to me why we have a depleted farm team.
  6. We are at the beginning wave of prospects coming to this team with more to follow in the future. In 3 years time our Utica rookies will be maturing and probably starting to compete in playoff runs. Which is when I suspect they pull the pin on the Utica agreement in year 3. I think that's when we can break term? Anyways point being bringing a more mature farm team loaded with canucks prospects will actually be very sellable in Abbotsford. Once the teams draft picks keep rolling in you have a good competitive farm team churning rookies out. This all takes time. Benning set out to rebuild both teams. You can only do so much when your prospect cupboard is so bare. Unfortunately you Utica fans are going thru the painful 'rebuild' process as we canucks fans are with the big club. We are all going thru this rebuild process together. Rough ride, but a bright future ahead!
  7. Haha sorry no. I'm a power engineer by trade, I operate a large refining facility in northern bc, camp job. Lots of call outs at night etc.
  8. I honestly have zero time to do the GDTs, my job has me working 14-16 hour days a lot of the time, so I just want to thank all of you who put your time in to make sure we all have a place to talk about the game while it's going on. @xereau you have been knocking them outta the park this year sir, cheers. Thanks for all your hard work on here everyone!
  9. You bet, should have been more clear with that. Boston is a big hockey town. But as you said NHL takes a back seat to the NBA and NFL.
  10. You are right. I think there will always be that kind of divide too. Or else we wouldn't have much to talk or debate about on here haha. I think some players can handle crazed Canadian markets but there are lots of guys who don't. I think Guddy was overwhelmed with the "attention" he got here. The dude had almost no confidence at the end. By no means am I blaming our fan base. We have the right to be as passionate as we want. But maybe it can explain why some players come here and flop so hard. Eriksson strikes me as that too, he does not like to have the attention on him. I wonder if he would rebound on another team? The American teams have solid fan bases but NHL players say all the time how they like the obscurity of playing for those teams as they can just go out and buy frigging groceries with out getting mobbed.
  11. You hit a lot of good points there. I think you are correct. And you are seeing it more and more these days where kids are staying in the BCHL or AJHL, etc and plan to go the college route after being drafted. Makar is a good example of this. I think the young players are seeing this as a great option as well. It would be nice if the CHL would allow players to be developed in mens leagues after being drafted. But I also respect the fact they are trying to maintain a profitable business and keeping star players for longer allows them to ice a more competitive product. Most CHL teams are barely keeping their head above water financially, so I get their hesitation on the matter.
  12. You would have to hope that management has already looked into this situation for more clarity just so they don't mess up and have to protect him. You would think there would be some kind of 1-800 NHL CBA rule help line for these teams or something of the sort lol. I find it crazy that these multi million dollar franchises are in the dark when it comes to these things. So i'll just take Benning at face value when he says "it won't be an issue".
  13. I'm guilty myself of heaping praise on Benning and his drafting abilities. But we can't forget how instrumental Brackett has been for our drafting. Him and Benning both seem to see eye to eye. Both seem to like kids coming from the American leagues who are slated to go to college. They've unearthed so many gems. Gaudette, Boeser, Madden, Lockwood, Hughes, Demko, Rathbone, heck even by extension Stetcher too...i'm sure other teams will be trying to poach Brackett, I hope like you we can keep him in the fold somehow...but eventually he will be looking to move up. I hope the Canucks make room for him to expand his role if and when he sees fit to do so.
  14. I just wish people would stop acting like they think the AHL is some bush league that our gifted prospects should just take over right away and succeed...it's so far from the truth. I've watched Vancouvers farm system teams all the way back to the Manitoba Moose years in the early 2000's. It's always the same thing, high end rookie comes in and is humbled by the quality of competition in the AHL. It's amazing how many think it's a cake walk...it is not, it's a great league with quality competition. It's no joke.
  15. I think there is a misconception about Cull. I think he's a great coach and doing a good job with the farm team. He was on the power house Crunch teams and developed a lot of players that are now dominating in Tampa Bay...as we all can see from the standings, these players I think were coached the right way and Cull was a huge part in their development... Palmu and Dahlen are highly gifted offensive players, as such they have always been given big ice time most of their careers. It's a hard pill to swallow when you get to the AHL and you have to take a back seat to development. Cull is trying to teach them how to play the right way defensively. It's their biggest thing down there, making sure they have a 200 foot game that is ready to translate to the NHL. It's what the Canucks management have asked Utica and Cull to do with their prospects. Palmu and Dahlen have lots to learn to round out their games, but they both were impatient with their own development and both thought they should be playing more...so you see the end result, Palmu back to Finland and Dahlen to the Sharks. If Palmu doesn't wrap his head around the fact he has to have a solid 2 way game then he will never succeed with this team. Lind, Gadjovich, MacEwan, Brisbois, Sautner, Jasek, Chatfield are all examples of players who we drafted that are buying into the system. People on here clamouring that our rookies haven't gotten proper playing time are out to lunch. Lind and Gadj were not very good to start the season. But now the coaching staff is starting to implement them alot more in the line up as they gain confidence playing in a harder faster leauge than they once were in. Both are starting to look a lot better now. MacEwan we can see is well polished from our coaching group on the farm as well. Hell Kero, Boucher, Gaunce who are under contract are all looking good right now too. Goldy played lights out for the farm last season too. There is nothing wrong going on here...just prospect development...each have their own unique paths...one size does not fit all. Some will slip through the cracks and others will prosper. It's the way it is so chill out over Dahlen and Palmu please. Another argument is the lack of high end talent on the farm and why we don't have anything there? Well look at our high end talent...it was so good it didn't need the farm they went straight to the NHL...Virtanen (yes he did play a bit there but not much), Boeser, Pettersson, Gaudette (minimal farm time), Hughes (since they already stated they want him in the NHL now)...only Juolevi has gone to the farm for development. This is something we should not complain about...wah wah we have no high end prospects in the AHL...haha, because they went straight to the NHL that's why... Perspective is key in these arguments.
  16. I'll gladly eat crow on calling out Goldy so much on this site if he keeps playing the way he has over the last 2 games. I don't know but it seems to me something has finally "clicked" with him. You even look at his body posture on the bench and ice and he's showing way more confidence than he was at the start of the season. I really hope this kid turns the corner. He's got a great attitude so he deserves it.
  17. If you think about it tho we are just starting to see the Benning draftees making the team, it's been delayed as you stated above but we should now start seeing more and more young guns make the farm team...We have drafted well in the college ranks, but these kids don't see much time in Utica due to NCAA rules (Gaudette, Lockwood, Hughes, Madden, Rathbone etc) those are a lot of names that won't see Utica until they are in their 20's... And the fact that in the first 2 seasons Benning was trading away picks and other young assets to get the 22-25 year old age range filled up as it was a black hole in the organization... So he mortgaged a bit of our future to get some NHL players and flesh out a roster. But now we are seeing the first wave of true Benning prospects hitting the team. We are at the tip of the ice berg so to speak with a lot more to come. It's a bit delayed but I think the reasoning behind it is sound. Utica will be getting a lot more rookies over the next few seasons to go with the ones that arrived this year. DiPietro, Joulevi (once healthy), Lind, Gadjovich, Jasek, Brassard, Elliot, Brisbois, Chatfield, etc...and that's not including NCAA talent. Utica in due time will have lots of prospects filling their roster. But right now we are kinda just stuck in the middle of the transition.
  18. Think of it this way, he can't possibly skate too far to get out of position like Guddy was doing lol...I was pleasently surprised by him in his short stint in Utica tho...you are right tho he is slow. But he can keep the crease clear and block shots with the best of them so that's a bonus. Plus he actually makes good puck decisions and can make decent outlet passes to his forwards. Where Guddy seemed to always be off on his passes. I think someone at the beginning of this thread posted a graph of Guddy VS Schenn and you can see Schenns successful zone exits is far and above better than Guddys...anyways I'm hoping he pleasantly surprises us, but his foot speed is a big red flag with him!
  19. So I took the time to respond but the system crashed and I don't think it posted my comments...long story short, will agree to disagree. I think in the end the situation was more dynamic that just what we're seeing. I made the comparison of Ho Sang for the Islanders, if you ask him he should be in the NHL too...but he has yet to crack the line up. I was a big fan of Dahlens literally until today when I heard about him requesting a trade. I just don't think it's right for a young kid who has proved nothing to demand such things. It's not like he's the first prospect to be given tough love to.
  20. Party hard sir, you have earned it...may never happen again after all. Treat it like it's your stanley cup
  21. I'm pretty torn on this trade. I really was starting to like his game in Utica. I'm never a fan of young players who have earned nothing demanding trades. I'm old school where you shut up, play hard, earn your minutes, and earn your call up...sounds like he was not willing to do that. So in that sense, good bye and good riddance, and good luck. I don't want anyone on this team who isn't willing to put the work in. OTT and now VAN, something is up with this kid. Oh well, welcome to the team Linus
  22. Completely agree. I was just thinking this the other night that they have both cemented themselves as solid 2nd pairing Dmen. Having them lock down the 2nd pairing for the next 3-5 years is exactly the kind of stability we need on the back end. If we traded Hutton it would have to really be worth it.
  23. I could see that as a good match. Plus he will have to be successful with anyone they put him with or he's just Goldobin all over again. But I will give Dahlen props, he has looked really good for a while now with Utica. Him and Jasek to me are NHL talent. Gadj and Lind have a bit to go, but they are making some progress now too. The farm has been fun to watch this year. We are finally starting to see some development happening!
  24. Sautner hasn't skipped a beat since re-joining the team. He is an absolute menace to forwards that try to get near the net. He is mobile and defends well and will most likely be called up. Offensively he's not going to blow you away, but he plays a sound solid game and is more refined than Brisbois.
