That's speculation, but the "he just wanted to move on" narrative isn't? Someone like Johnston isn't going to completely make $&!# up, especially since lawsuits can arise from that sort of thing. If you don't believe that, maybe you can believe this: https://twitter.com/FriedgeHNIC/status/1266475493915754501/
-
He obviously wouldn't explicitly talk $&!# about his former organization, but sources were indicating there was tension between him and Benning. https://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/patrick-johnston-are-the-canucks-judd-brackett-headed-in-different-directions -- This source implies Brackett was the main guy pushing for Pettersson and that there were heated debates about it, implying Benning wanted Glass. https://theathletic.com/2333370/2021/01/20/canucks-hoglander-draft-scout-pettersson/ -- this source shows that Benning essentially meddled and picked Hoglander, mainly posting this to prove that this isn't just me pushing an "anti-Jim" agenda. I don't know if Benning running the scouting department will be better or worse for the team, but this is pretty obviously not a case where Brackett just wanted to move on or whatever. If Jim is still here for our next draft, it should be very telling.
-
Brackett left because he didn't want Benning to meddle with who he picked. If our drafting turns to $&!# after Judd leaves, will people maybe admit that Benning isn't some super scout, and that the Hughes/Pettersson picks shouldn't give Benning infinite job security?

It's almost as if having absurdly good goaltending and squeaking out of lots of tight games (often in OT/SO) isn't a sustainable model for winning.

Good claim, will be instantly better than all the other expensive garbage Benning brings in. Trade Sutter now.- 293 replies

I don't know if "he just wants to move on for no reason" is the likeliest scenario. This organization has a history of treating good employees on expiring contracts (Hamhuis/Tanev/Brackett/Matthias/Santorelli/Richardson/Stecher being some examples) like garbage and they don't exactly deserve the benefit of the doubt. They could be doing it again, or Clarke could be turned off by this organization's history.

The I have Mixed Feelings about Jim Benning Chaosthread 3000

what would it take for you to not trust him, genuine question -
i'm new here so it's kinda hard to tell lmao i've had actual discussions with people irl about this sort of thing.
-
I was literally refuting the claim that Demko doing well is a product of Nolan Baumgartner's strong defensive system. Nothing that you said has anything to do with that.
-
The Canucks literally have the worst 5v5xGA/60, 5v5SCA/60, and 2nd worst 5v5HDCA/60 in the entire league.

I'm not arguing whether or not letting the players walk was a good decision or not. I'm saying that it's severely unprofessional, lazy and bound to piss off players and agents if you're just going to abruptly stop communicating with a player, and not even say "we appreciate your time here but we're not interested in retaining your services". Building relationships and a good image for your franchise is a very important part of being a manager. -

Every time stuff like this comes out, it gets on my nerves. Off the top of my head this is the 4th player (Toffoli, Stecher, Tanev and maybe even Markstrom) who has noted the lack of communication with the GM before free agency, and then Benning blatantly lied about this to the media. This is problematic in terms of ability to build a reputation amongst players and it's severely unprofessional. Saying "we appreciate your time here but want to go in a different direction" isn't exactly difficult, but Benning doesn't seem interested in doing his due diligence. -

Fans are critical of this team because they desperately want to success, and think the current situation isn't poised for success. You can disagree with their evaluations of the franchise, but anyone who is spending their time arguing with other people on a message board clearly cares about the long term well-being of this team. -

Yes, Buffalo too. But we should be looking at the actual top teams in the league when we're doing this -- that's where the Canucks are trying to get to. Being "better than Buffalo" doesn't lead to anything. -

Okay, cool. Assuming that he is the one behind all of our draft picks (and not the scouting staff), great that he can draft good players. Finding franchise players with high picks might be the most important, but it's much harder to actually build a proper supporting cast around the salary cap. No GM is "perfect" sure, but please find me one other GM who has spent 30mil similarly to how Benning has on Eriksson/Baertschi/Myers/Beagle/Roussel/Holtby/Sutter -- this is extremely abnormal and you will not find any actual good organizations doing this. San Jose and MAYBE the Islanders are the only teams that have managed their cap worse than us, and the latter is at least contending for a cup right now. Why does it matter if he can't properly support the talent? I'm not comparing out drafting with Chicago's or Florida's, I'm comparing the ability to support the talent with shrewd, cheap acquisitions, which is what you need to win a cup. Look at how quickly the Panthers turned around as soon as they got rid of Tallon and replaced him with what'll likely be a GMOTY candidate in Zito -- if we can get a new GM similar to Zito this offseason, we'll actually start winning games and stop talking about "potential". -

Nobody is comparing Benning's contracts, pro scouting and asset management to "Xbox", it's being compared to basically every other GM in the league. This is extremely important in making this team emerge into a contender -- this is what separates teams like the 2010 Blackhawks from teams like the Panthers over the last decade. -

and, given his track record, why are you confident in benning's ability to manage the cap?

The I have Mixed Feelings about Jim Benning Chaosthread 3000
Josepho replied to Me_'s topic in Canucks Talk
Even before this season began, I think it was clear to the millions that Mr Jim Benning was already the joke of the NHL... but come on... did he really do it again?! Is this real? Are you kidding me?! It wasn't enough that he somehow managed to sign Erik Gudbranson to a terrible extension after drastically overpaying for him. Fast forward a year... 2018 after Gudbranson and Eriksson's contracts are biting him in the ass... Jim said he doesn't care! Bring on Roussel and Beagle I LIKE IT! But to somehow pull 2019 out of the hat too?! It's a little early but I'm concerned in what I've seen and Mr Jim Benning's outlook. Stralman Chiarot Shattenkirk are more reliable defencemen and none seem to have a lower floor to me than Myers... none are as "irresponsible"... Also those guys went for cheaper, shorter contracts ... the fact that the loser signed Myers for 5 years... unreal. For all we know Myers and Ferland could be worst two contracts of this free agency. Wouldn't surprise me. Whatever Jim touches turns into $&!#. I didn't even mention when he overpaid to acquire and inexplicably extended an overrated Brandon Sutter in 2015... simply put this franchise has never had a glorified bum who does as little as Suttsy does. He's one of those guys that thinks he's hot $&!# because of his name.. such an underwhelming player.. the world needs less Brandon Sutters. Anyways... I could go on for days and days about all the negative things that Jim has done during his tenure... but that's not my goal. My goal is to see this fan base unified as one and hating the moron ruining our window and being upset for the plethora of awful contracts we have. This would include stopping all positive thoughts... no one cares that you draft good players with top 10 picks the league rewards to bad teams.. Everyone ends up doing a few good things in a 7 year tenure... being OCD and focusing on nonsense like that does nothing but harm your own mental well being in the long term. I urge you Canucks nation... don't watch the games and do something better with your time. Stop the nonsense, stop praising our own garbage players, coaches, GM... if someone is to be traded Jim will probably not handle it and just let the player walk in free agency. You don't have to praise a bad player or terrible GM. It does nothing but multiply delusion in your own life. Disclaimer: I understand this only applies to 80-90% of our fan base which are brainwashed into thinking that drafting with high picks is all a GM has to do - but sadly this 80-90% makes too much noise. If you have friends that are in this category please try and get them to change their tune... we need all hands on deck for unification We were trending in the wrong direction and were a few points away from missing the playoffs last year... this group will take us there again. United we are stronger. DON'T BELIEVE Jim's process. He's taking us to the basement! Anyways, I'm off to hoge the rest of the day, and obviously all night! Fire Benning! -
Laying down on the Job. Myers reverting to his Buffalo +- days
Josepho replied to Primal Optimist's topic in Canucks Talk
I don't think he's among the worst defencemen in the league, but when pretty much all analytics models hate the player (IneffectiveMath and EvolvingWild being two other examples), there very likely is some sort of issue with the player. xGA is a better actual predictor of future performance, and it's not like his GA is even great. Agree that he'd look better next to Edler/Schmidt, but as a 6mil player you have to be able to carry your pairing to some degree. Obviously he's better than Chatfield/Rafferty but that's more of a reflection on this team's godawful depth than anything else. I fully admit that this is also probably not the best organizational fit for him. I actually think most of your points are pretty reasonable here. -

I don't know what "possession stats" you're referring to, but Pittsburgh was very good in certain categories, especially the 2016 cup. 5v5xGF% and 5v5SCF% are probably the best metrics to use, because they actually managed to include shot quality into their formula. I went through literally every cup finalist (not just winner) since 07-08 (through naturalstattrick), and there definitely appears to be some correlation with the aforementioned stats and success. Average Leaguewide ranking in 5v5xGF% for cup finalist: 8.1 Median Leaguewide ranking in 5v5xGF% for cup finalist: 6 Average Leaguewide ranking in 5v5SCF% for cup finalist: 7.5 Median Leaguewide ranking in 5v5SCF% for cup finalist: 6.5 I definitely understand that QOC/QOT/Deployment is a big factor and is definitely the biggest flaw of modern analytics at the moment. However, all the stats measuring that sort of thing don't indicate that Myers is taking on the "best of the best" -- that's Edler/Schmidt (the latter being an actual good Benning acquisition I will give full credit for). But he definitely isn't "shutting down all-stars", in the sense that he isn't really playing against all-stars or shutting them down. Among players with a minimum 100 minutes, Myers ranks 12/21 in 5v5GA/60, Worst on the team in 5v5xGA/60, 9th worst on the team in 5v5SCA/60. If anything, Myers has been bailed out by decent goaltending, but is still surrendering a lot of high quality chances on the ice, without taking on the toughest minutes like Edler/Schmidt. Additionally, the fact that he takes a $&!# ton of penalties while playing is a genuine issue that gets shrugged off more than it should. And my entire point about Myers struggling defensively in tough minutes is that a 6mil player shouldn't be struggling this badly in their own zone in any sort of minutes. I've seen you and the other poster use the "appeal to authority" argument, but I can just as easily say that no other GM wanted to give Myers anything close to this contract and hence it is a bad signing. Cheveldayoff in particular, after already losing two other starting RD and being in an extremely unattractive market for free agents, had no problem letting someone else give Myers this bloated contract. Also, see my point below about how Burke actually values analytics -- he may have liked the signing at the time it happened, but he'd also acknowledge that his defensive metrics are poor. Don't deny that he has some offensive touch, but at 6mil you need to be a better all-situations defender. So you don't think anyone hired that isn't by an NHL team has a valid opinion? Why am I supposed to care about yours then? If JFresh gets signed by a team, is his opinion magically valid and will you change your mind about Myers? Hell, Brian Burke himself admitted that he was going to trade for Ristolainen but only changed his mind when his analytics department told him not to. If that's not 100% basing your decision on analytics, I don't know what is. You're once again resorting to insulting people who don't share the same opinion as you, and not actually refuting their points. Maybe you should grow the &^@# up and actually attempt to explain what specifically are wrong with modern analytics models. You still didn't bother explaining to me what Myers does that analytics doesn't measure, and how it specifically impacts the success of this team. -

Explain what precisely Myers does that analytics cannot measure, and more specifically, how it has an impact on this team's success. I don't think he's complete "garbage" and has some utility as a 3rd pairing OFD, but has horrific value when combined with his contract. JFresh is just one "analytics gurus". Lots of these guys (mannyelk, namita, rhys jessop) are actually getting employed by teams, and I can just as easily say that there's a reason people like you are stuck posting their opinions on forums. Based on credentials, these people's opinions are sure as &^@# more valuable than yours. And if you don't believe that teams employ analytics guys, you should probably listen to this from a coach with multiple cups. You call me annoying, but you're the one who has blatantly insulted people/data that has disagreed with your opinion multiple times without even considering that some of the complaints might be valid (while I've acknowledged that there may be some things Myers is useful at), who is truly annoying in this case? -

Josepho replied to Primal Optimist's topic in Canucks Talk
If your immediate reaction to data that disagrees with you is that the data is flawed (and to call people who base their opinions off data "losers"), then there's something seriously fundamentally wrong with the way that you're thinking. That's an incredibly dangerous and arrogant mindset, especially with how prominent analytics have become in the league. There are issues with how analytics correlate with deployment, but with Schmidt/Edler playing the toughest minutes that clearly isn't the case here. -

It's almost as if I base my opinions on players off of legitimate data based on on-ice events instead of cognitive biases. I don't completely hate Myers in a vacuum, but he's meant to be a 3rd pairing guy getting easy, offensive-oriented deployment. He's nowhere near worth is salary and isn't "killing it" this season -- criticism is absolutely warranted. The fact that anyone thinks he's as close to as good as Schmidt baffles me. -
