Honest Conversation With Those Who Still Support Management
Josepho replied to JohnTavares's topic in Canucks Talk
The Canucks weren't exactly loaded with LW prospects either. But you should never pick by need. RW wasn't considered our biggest position of need in 2015, should we have passed on Boeser then? Also, given that the arguments are about how Benning is some great scout, he should be able to identify the best options for his team himself. A GM shouldn't simply get credit as a great scout for picking what the lists say. -

Relative to other picks in the draft, it's absolutely looking rough to basically have an identical P/G clip in your draft year and +1 year. Matthew Tkachuk was contributing in an NHL role, Clayton Keller was killing it in the NCAA, Sergachev was producing better in the OHL. Nylander (while not great) transitioned to the AHL decently. Juolevi easily had the worst post-draft year of any of these players. -

The website literally calculated the average rankings of 10 different popular draft ranking sources, you can literally calculate these things yourself to reach the same conclusion if you don't believe the website. You said Juolevi's poor development was "completely injury related", I responded by saying that his development in his +1 was looking rough before his injuries hit. I think that's a relevant point when people say "but injuries" in response to the Juolevi pick. -

When I said Juolevi wasn't projecting well, I was referring to the 2016-2017 season after he was drafted. I don't care if it's been well documented that JB wasn't going to pick Tkachuk, that's his problem. If he's this "super scout", he should be able to identify the best players for the franchise. https://mapleleafshotstove.com/2016/06/22/2016-nhl-draft-rankings-june-22/ Aggregate rankings had Tkachuk substantially above Juolevi in the rankings -- it was definitely a reach at the time, especially since the top 5 was considered in their own tier. -

Juolevi wasn't projecting well before he had injury issues. He might turn into a decent player, but he very obviously is one of the worst players taken high in that draft. And this logic that it was an excusable pick because he's not good enough to cost money is ridiculous. By the same logic, Pettersson/Hughes/Boeser weren't helpful to our team because they end up costing money and putting us up against the cap. And even if Tkachuk did lead to us struggling with the cap, then we could trade him for a bunch of picks. -
Benning doesn't hit draft after draft out of the park too. Virtanen and Juolevi certainly weren't the right picks, and as of right now I don't think Podkolzin was the best player available at 10th. Chris Gear has been employed as AGM for about a year and a half. We have a ton of Benning's body of work prior to that. Additionally, scouting is far more random. Predicting how an 18 year old will turn out is far more random than evaluating how a 27 year old NHL player currently is. Also, we can look at Benning's evaluation(s) of his own players to get an idea of how he evaluates them, this is the same guy who A ) Watched Sbisa suck here and managed to give him a significant raise. B ) Watched Gudbranson suck here and managed to give him a significant raise. C ) Brought Granlund back for 18-19 despite being trash for all of his prior seasons here. Stuff like that doesn't exactly instill confidence in me. Why won't you validate my second paragraph with a response? Can you explain why Sutter/Beagle/Roussel/Myers/etc. are good leaders, and not any of the guys we booted to the curb like Hamhuis/Richardson/Bonino/etc., or any of the cheaper UFA (or actual good) alternatives from those years?
-
He's both a poor talent evaluator and poor negotiator. I mean, he thought Sutter at over 4mil was better value than Bonino at 1.9mil. "Leadership" is a justification for bringing in players who are (usually) statistically terrible with no actual redeeming on-ice qualities.
-
That's a dumb comment to make on his parf. He's just using "leadership" to justify bringing in garbage players, while kicking aside guys (Tanev, Hamhuis, Richardson, etc.) who were either way more qualified for that role and were actually good at hockey. In the past two years he's significantly overpaid for Myers, Holtby and Pearson. He won't use his cap space more wisely because he's an awful negotiator with awful pro-scouting, and agents can use his many awful contracts as reference points and work from there. That comment from Benning about Pearson's agent told him he'd get that kind of contract in free agency was completely embarrassing.

Stecher was on the ice for one 5v5 goal against for the entire series against Vegas while putting up some of the best shot differentials on the team. The idea that Vegas exposed him is &^@#ing asinine. -

The bottom line is that there definitely were opportunities to collect value, and Benning missed out on them. And blaming what Benning inherited for his constant inability to manage his assets properly is ridiculous. Most teams aren't going to be trading their players for picks, so I don't see how all 30 teams are relevant, but a non-playoff team like us should've absolutely been looking to do so. It's not a coincidence that some of the most common teams in my example (Toronto, NYR, Carolina) currently have an upward trajectory -- they know how to capitalize on what they have. And sure, a list of 6 may not be impressive on its own, but this is a list of ~20 where the Canucks don't show up once. We failed to take advantage of an easy way to gain picks. Obviously a single 4th rounder or whatever is unlikely to make a difference, but this sort of thing adds up over time, especially combined with how often Benning trades away picks. I completely disagree that we are "chock a block full" of anything. Our prospect pool is extremely mediocre and basically every prospects source will agree with that. But even if it was, picks are still assets. They (or the prospects picked with them) can be used to trade for actual good players. Look at how Colorado was able to parlay picks they accumulated into guys like Toews/Burakovsky. Same thing with Toronto and Muzzin. LA/NYR are seen as the most likely destinations for Eichel because of how well they've managed to gain assets. They can afford to make those moves. There is no "trade-off" here. We can absolutely still have players shelter, insulate, etc. our young guys while also moving them for assets and replacing them with other players who can be moved for assets. There is no reason that only veterans on bloated contracts can insulate our young players. And finally, all of this is more so a reflection of Benning's asset management overall, and it's unlikely that he'll flip a switch and suddenly know how to maximize profits from what he has. -
[discussion/poll] Trent Cull - next coach of the Canucks?
Josepho replied to JM_'s topic in Canucks Talk
The best hockey player ever was a terrible coach. Being an NHL player shouldn't automatically make someone a valid candidate. -

You can also look at other teams who (relatively cheaply) brought in UFAs who managed to get good value out of them while Benning didn't. In 2014, Olli Jokinen - eventually traded for a 6th. Patrick Eaves - eventually moved for a 1st. Tim Gleason - eventually moved for a 4th. Devan Dubnyk - eventually moved for a 3rd. Brian Boyle - eventually moved for a 2nd. David Legwand - eventually packaged for a 1st. In 2015, Daniel Winnik - eventually packaged for a 2nd. Tomas Fleischmann - signed VERY late into free agency, was eventually packaged with Weise for Danault and a 2nd in one of the most lopsided trades in recent NHL history. Lee Stempniak - eventually moved for a 2nd. Johnny Oduya - eventually moved for a 4th. Mike Green - eventually moved for a 4th. Michael Frolik - eventually moved for a 4th. In 2016, Jonathan Marchessault - wasn't necessarily traded for anything but this is definitely a player we could've picked up cheaply and gotten value out of. Unfortunately, our pro scouting has never been good enough to pick up on an asset like this. Ben Lovejoy - eventually packaged for a 3rd. David Schlemko - eventually moved for a 5th. Vernon Fiddler - eventually moved for a 4th. Viktor Stalberg - eventually moved for a 3rd. Michael Grabner - eventually moved for a 2nd. Thomas Vanek - eventually moved for a 3rd. Steve Ott - eventually moved for a 6th. Citing what Benning inherited as the reason he hasn't been able to accumulate assets is blatantly incorrect, especially since he's been here for 7 years and has never shown any consistent ability to do so. And since I know this will be used as an excuse, know that many of these players also signed with poor/rebuilding teams. -

The idea that we didn't have "saleable assets" is incredibly flawed. And it doesn't even really hold much water because we horribly misused most of the assets that did have actual value anyways. I don't think Jim deserves the benefit of the doubt for being unable to get value out of his players. Bieksa -- traded for a 2nd (good), then stupidly downgraded to a 3rd in the Sutter trade for literally no reason. Kesler -- traded (with two 2nd round picks) for what is now Brandon Sutter, Tanner Pearson, and a 3rd. Absolutely pathetic asset management. We literally would've been better off waiving him. Hansen -- traded for a bust in Goldobin and a 4th. Burrows -- traded for Dahlen (this one was good enough) Garrison -- traded for a 2nd (probably an underpayment), then downgraded from the 2nd to Vey. Higgins -- coming off an 0.5 P/G season in 13-14, we didn't sell high and let the asset deteriorate. I don't think I've ever seen Benning attempt to sell high as GM here before. Lack -- traded for a 3rd (probably under market value considering how well he had played for us up to then). And then you can look at assets on the 13-14 Canucks that other teams were actually able to get value out of, but Jim somehow wasn't. Santorelli - cheaply signed with Toronto, was then thrown into a package traded for a high pick. Matthias - cheaply signed with Toronto, was then traded for a 4th from Colorado. Even if you believe that no other players inherited by Benning could've possibly gone for value (which I don't, especially in a league where guys like Forbort and Fantenberg managed to get traded for picks), he still did an awful job dealing with what he got. The outlook of this team is still probably significantly better if we handled the above players better. -

11 at 5v5, 6 against empty net. It's interesting that you mention Loui because I think the fact that his production has gotten worse despite replacing his most common winger linemate Loui with a far better offensive talent in Hoglander makes it look even worse for him. -

Josepho replied to appleboy's topic in Canucks Talk
In 19-20 he had 9 empty net points, which was tied with Kyle Connor for the league lead. I just completely disagree with the notion that 19-20 is best representative of Pearson, and that this year should be entirely discounted because of the schedule, especially considering that his decline came during the end of the 19-20 season and through the playoffs. It seems far more likely that he had a career year last season and will never return to that. I guess time will tell. -

Josepho replied to appleboy's topic in Canucks Talk
His production (which was already massively driven by empty net points) has been absolutely terrible since February 2020. This is a player that has had a large sample size of not producing well that even predates this season. It's not last season anymore, Pearson has changed (for the worse) as a player. -

Josepho replied to appleboy's topic in Canucks Talk
He definitely doesn't. His 5v5 P/60 (1.13) is lower than guys like Jordie Benn and Tyler Motte. His production has been absolutely terrible this season relative to his ice time. -
You definitely let Hamonic go in that case. If I was the GM I'd probably just move off Myers regardless.
-
It should be Myers, but that's not gonna happen because we're stuck with that contract. Hamonic has been a fine stopgap player, but we should be trying to give Hughes a better partner.
-
If Edler was too slow for the game, wouldn't his numbers suggest that he is as well? He and Schmidt have easily been our best two defencemen this season. The flaw of +/- is that it often gets used out of context, and players in more defensive situations (like Edler) would suffer as a result of that, but he had a great goal differential in spite of what is very hard deployment. Hughes' goal differential is concerning (especially relative to deployment) and he's mostly been a trainwreck at 5v5 this season, so while I don't think he's the worst defenceman in the league, I think he's severely overwhelmed by his current role at 5v5. The team was literally worse after getting rid of Tanev and Toffoli -- I have no idea what point you're trying to prove here. Guys like Ohlund, Bertuzzi, and the Sedins were all washed, but this is a very weird and inconsistent list of players. I simply disagree that Edler is done and there's no metric that will indicate that his play has been a problem with this team. I just have no idea how people can watch Myers bleed goals against and take penalties and conclude that Edler at <4mil is one of the team's bigger issues.
