Edler was a +3 with one of the best xGF% numbers on the team despite only having 10% OZone starts playing shutdown minutes against some of the best players on the planet.
-
Edler has done fine this season. This is a player who definitely wants to stay here and a good GM would be using that as leverage to get him cheaply. Benning (if he's still our GM) has such a godawful track record with pro-scouting defencemen -- there's very little chance he'll be able to properly replace Edler.

Seven years without a clear plan from Canucks brass.

Signing a legitimately good shutdown 3C would be absolutely huge for this team and I don't really know how you can argue otherwise. Expecting the youth to continue to develop is a very risky strategy. -
The Gillis prospects you mentioned also showed promise, they just didn't work out. It's not like those guys were doomed picks from the beginning. Guys like Hodgson, Corrado, Jensen and Schroeder all were probably more valuable as prospects than (or at the very least comparable to) guys like Lind, Woo, DiPietro and Rathbone. People always get excited over late(r) round guys like Lind, but they usually don't turn out.

[discussion/poll] Trent Cull - next coach of the Canucks?
Josepho replied to JM_'s topic in Canucks Talk
He's probably who I'd put money being behind our bench next season. I have no idea how that'll work out. -
The job is literally called a general MANAGER, having someone with good communication skills who's able to articulate their plan and get the entire organization to buy in is massive. You can conceivably be a good GM without watching a hockey game at all by just deferring to other competent people. I'd much rather that than what we have now.

It definitely isn't the coach's job to comment on the Virtanen situation and I have no idea why that Johnston article is offending so many here. Benning and Aquilini are the leaders of the team, and throwing out a coach without a new contract to face the forefront for the (very serious) situation is pathetic.

Finally dawned on me why we let Gaudette go for so little in return

Do you think he cares more than Melnyk? -

I don't think our owner cares that much given that he's kept a complete moron that he likes pushing around and is cutting costs with the team. Even if Melnyk is worst, Aquilini has cemented himself as one of the worst in the league over the past decade. -

It's pretty hard to get worse than what we currently have. -

We don't even necessarily have to look at Benning's trade acquisitions to evaluate his ability to evaluate talent. He watched guys like Gudbranson/Sbisa/Granlund/Pouliot suck ass here, and decided to give them all extensions. Aside from one year with Sbisa in Vegas, all of those players immediately found themselves out of favour with literally every other team in the league. This either suggests that he is a poor talent evaluator or he's too arrogant to admit his own mistakes. Doesn't bode well either way. -

Even if we're ignoring the fact that there is quite literally no reasonable deal involving OEL... The fact that Bob Murray traded a 7th to us for Del Zotto and then unloaded him for a better pick within a month is basically direct proof that Benning isn't a very good negotiator. -

Eriksson for OEL (one for one, with absolutely no other assets involved, regardless of how much Arizona retained) is still an absolutely miserable deal for us and should've never been considered. Just a completely horrendous contract long-term, and the fact that Benning attempted to acquire it contradicts the idea that he wants our cap situation to be settled when Pettersson/Hughes get their bigger contracts. -
It's almost as if terrible and expensive veterans cited for their leadership/grit/intangibles/etc. don't actually help the team win.
-
Genuine question: how will your perception of Benning change IF the team underperforms next season?
-
There's been basically no difference between guys like Boyd and Vesey and what guys like Beagle and Roussel (aside from 18-19) have been doing here for years.

Maybe it's not progression. You're pointing out the fact that this is a "down year", but maybe 19-20 was an "up year" where we went all-in just to make the playoffs once and then have a bunch of our team leave in free agency. That team had some very obvious flaws relating to its 5v5 gameplay and that wasn't likely to sustain itself going forward. We were nowhere near as good as Vegas. The team might've technically gotten the fourth most successful playoff run, but that was based on Demko putting up an unrepeatable performance. Overreacting to single playoff runs puts you in a similar position to the 2017 Oilers or Senators. -

If he's "streaky", the bad streaks sure have been outnumbering the good streaks, dating back to the end of last regular season and in the playoffs last year. If the team has no one good enough to replace him in your eyes, that's on Benning. But I disagree anyways, I don't see why we can't try Podz on the LW (or put him at RW and move Hoglander to LW) of that line. Or we can just bring someone in through free agency. Given the COVID market, there WILL be comparable players to Pearson available for cheaper in UFA. I'd rather take the laziest player in the world who is generating results over someone who looks like they're trying hard but isn't accomplishing anything. If a player who has constantly produced well is "invisible" to you, I feel like it says more about your evaluation of hockey than it does the player. Focus on the results, not how they're achieved. I would rather have both Hoglander and Toffoli on the team. And on a team where the cap is/was managed well, that'd be reality. Hoglander is obviously younger and cheaper, but Toffoli is easily a better player at the moment. -

Sorry, I was comparing Pearson/Toffoli's production at the time of their contracts.
