People flocked to see them, and the TV shows did extremely well because of them. The shows were funny, because the characters were interesting and made people laugh. It's not how big the guy is, it's whether he can act, be interesting, entertain, and be funny. Every one watch knows it's scripted. The fake competition is of zero value.
For example, Al Snow was nothing until he started parading around with "Head". The characters of the nineties were funny. And the company was extremely successful then.
