Are you suggesting no team can win the Cup without ELC contracts in their key core? IMHAO it’s more likely those cost controlled guys (ELC’s and second contracts that are reasonable) would be in the supporting cast. I agree we will need supporting role players that are on value contracts. -

Actually this management is building for the long term. Look at the ages of our key core players. And we just added a young Hronek to that key core. -

Who did the current management buy that’s a short term vision? The draft is certainly important, but free agency and trades are important too, especially in building the supporting group. Tampa drafted Hedman, but acquired there other D that won those two Cups via trade or free agency. -

A club is only as good as their key core. The Wings need those young drafted guys to develop into great players, or they stay in the middle. Maybe they do, or maybe they don’t? Clearly Yzerman doesn’t think he has the right ones just yet, or he wouldn’t have given up on the season. -

The difference with this key core and the one Gillis built around is the age. This group is younger. Benning had no chance. What our owner expected Benning to accomplish was beyond unattainable. But, Benning did bring us Demko, Petey, Hughes, and Miller. The new people added Hronek. That’s a young enough key core, if properly supported, to have a 5-8 year run. This management has been adding support players while trying to get the much needed (young) right shot #2 D to complete the key core. They already brought in Mik, Kuz, Aman, Joshua. They missed with some guys too, like Lazar. -

Miller is a very good 2C. We have Mik, Kuz, Aman, Joshua, Podz. Very good support players in their roles. It’s clear we have the key core in place, and they are at the perfect age to build around. We continue building the supporting cast. Yes, we need a right shot defensive minded 3C and a couple other supporting pieces. A lot easier to acquire those pieces than the key core. And we have an excellent key core. -

I think, unless we move up, or are passed by a club moving up (so we drop) we will draft 9OA. -

Petey is going to be a great player for another 8 years. Miller is only 29. He can definitely support Petey in the 2C role for another 5 years. A checking, right shot, 3C is a supporting piece. Gillis found Malholtra. (Left shot, of course, but was a perfect get for that group) This management will find us the right guy too. -

Yup. If our core was old or very young, then sure the direction should be different. But our core is at the perfect age to build around to have a 5 - 7 year run of high level compete. When have we ever had a great goalie, a fabulous 1C, an excellent 2C, a franchise level 1D, and a high end 2D all either in or just entering their primes? The closest would have been the Twins with Luongo and Kes. They were all older than our current core though. Gillis build a fabulous supporting cast, but the winning was short lived because the core was older. Now our key core is at a much better age. Plus, if we get lucky at the draft and snag another key core piece, when he’s competing at a high level (and requires a cap allocation that represents that) then we can trade the guy he’s replacing. Our immediate future and long term look very bright. -

What key core pieces are we missing though? Yes, we need to improve the supporting cast, but the key core is in place. elite goalie elite #1 D elite #2 D Elite #1 C Elite #2 C Our supporting cast is changing over to better. Mik, Kuz, Podz, Aman, Joshua. Yes we need to move on from OEL, Myers, Boeser, Garland. Will happen this summer. Buyout OEL. Trade Myers after his bonus. Trade Boeser with 1.65 retention. Trade Garland. Combined we clear over 20 million in cap with those moves. Lots of room to bring in even better supporting players. -

So what do we do to not win? We have some fantastic players, who control the game when they are on the ice. Demko William steal games. Hughes is a possession and positive shot guy extraordinaries. Petey is a phenomenal 200 foot centre. Kuz Missile can score in a lot of ways. We added Hronek, and when he’s in he will anchor our second pair. And we have a coaching staff that’s implemented a proper defensive structure and insists on players playing the right way. -
A realistic Offseason (Discussion/Proposal)

Looks great! That’s definitely a playoff team, and with Demko could have playoff success too. I think we might move on from Garland. Hogs will get his shot in that spot. We save another 4 mil on the cap too. -

5-3 Us Yappy. -
Tocchet said in his post game presser (last night) that Hronek is here and working out every day. Said he’s still week to week. Hronek will carry OEL on our second pairing. We will sign Livingston to play with Hughes. Myers on the bottom pair with Wolanen. That’s a very good group. Elite puck movers in our top two pairs and Wolanen is pretty good too. Myers and OEL can just focus on the defensive parts of the game.

Yup. Love to be heavier and harder to play against on the Wings. -

Sure. Those kinds of guys (like Miller) are not easy to get. But to me the key core is the five guys listed. Goalie. #1C. #2C. #1D#2D. A big, tough, scoring winger could be considered a key core piece too. I accept that. -

He is the final piece of the key core. Demko, Hughes, Hronek, Petey, Miller. That’s a great key core. Now we work on completing the supporting cast so the key core can attain their best. -

You do realize Hronek just turned 25 a few months ago, right? He’s a top pairing, right shot D. We needed that piece to complete our key core. Is your hope we use that pick to hopefully draft a guy who will, in five years, develop into a player as good as Hronek? -

Better coaching. Healthy Demko. Improved roster. We are better, and by a lot.
