is he still injured from last year?

    1. J-23

      J-23

      Probably 3-2.

Demko hasn’t been the Demko we know but he is coming off an injury.

Team has been horrendous defensively. Not much any goalie can do bout that.

I don’t get these youngins who want to go out in “a blaze of glory”.  What kind of screwed up personality wants to do this?  With access to firearms, we’re probably looking at a much higher body count. Slowly turning into the US.

  7. Who had the worse off season?

Dumbass and the LOSER LEAFS, or Tresnivling and the SMELLY COWPIES.  Got to bring us true Canuck fans great joy seeing these two LOSER teams LOSING.

      @-AJ-

After 8 years of Benning there hasn’t been much joy in “Mudville”.  So yippee to the LOSER LEAFS and SMELLY COWPIES having horrible off-seasons.  And thank God we no longer have Benning so we can take joy in watching us winning - again.

I'm sure Matthews is eyeing the date his contract ends. With the Leafs goaltending, he's not winning a Cup in TOR. I am a fan of this. Also, the Flames' two best players walked. Markstrom is going to be busy, and frustrated.

  8. Nick Suzuki listed as one of the worst NHL contracts.  Habs are in big trouble.  Lots of bad contracts with term there.  Andersson and Hoffman are worse than Suzuki.

      Quote

He’s generally good for around 30-to-35 points, but actually driving offence at five-on-five isn’t his specialty. That holds his value back a bit, especially from being a true number one, but his defensive ability is supposed to make up for it. At his peak, Parayko was one of the league’s very best defensive defencemen — one who would absolutely be worth a big-ticket deal.

The problem is Parayko hasn’t been that over the past two seasons. His relative scoring chance suppression has been OK, but that’s been relative to a below-average defensive team that gives up a fair share of chances. A lot of those chances are also ending up in the net, which over a larger sample size does matter — even if it’s prone to luck in the short term. Parayko is now projected to be an average defensive defender, with a little boost given because of the context of his usage which is very tough.

Right now Parayko looks like a strong number three according to GSVA, but there’s a path back towards being a legitimate top-pair defender … maybe even a high-end one like he once was. What Parayko needs is help on the left side. He isn’t a guy who can drive a pair on his own, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s harder to like an eight-year commitment at top-pairing money under those circumstances. Parayko has the ability, talent and size to be very valuable, but better support is needed.

I believe in Parayko and that he can get back there, but there’s an even bigger hindrance and that’s age. For a rugged defender, the age curve isn’t kind, especially as he enters his 30s. Parayko’s best comp is Erik Johnson which isn’t bad, but it isn’t great either.

Getting back to the top-pair level in his early 30s will make this deal much more palatable for the Blues, but it’s no guarantee and the mid-30s part will likely be even tougher to swallow. This will be a very interesting season for his trajectory.

    3. -AJ-

      -AJ-

Parayko often shows up as one of the stronger defensive D in my Norris analyses. Nurse was genuinely really good when he signed his deal, but he didn't maintain that level. I often find that Jones doesn't appear that bad either, but most of the eye-test people disagree with me there.

    4. King Heffy

      King Heffy

I'd be more than happy to take Parayko and his contract there if the Blues aren't happy with it.

yep. Pretty nice F group going into next season.

So we'll see. I'm fine with the 'walk for nothing' scenario if we go on a fun playoff run. But I expect some kind of Miller deal to go down too.

Didn't say much except that they are cap strapped. Will try to add a forward or two to the bottom six. Doesn't expect to have the wiggle room to improve the d core. Meh.

    3. Alflives

      Alflives

I thought JR’s most interesting comment was how they will start to very much worry about Miller at the 2023 TDL.  If Miller isn’t extended by that date then they will worry.

    4. Alflives

      Alflives

Another interesting comment from JR was about the meeting with scouts.  He said the first day the scouts didn’t really offer their thoughts much.  Then, after encouragement, there was a lot of discussion.  Sounds like Benning didn’t listen to scouts so they just learned to not say much.  Benning sure did a lot of damage.

Says you! Lol, just rattling off whatever comes of the top of your head.

    3. EternalCanuckFan

      EternalCanuckFan

Considering Wright not only fell past the Habs but two other teams, it's hard to judge their decision to go with Slafkovsky as negative right now.  Time will tell, of course, but there's a lot to like about Slafkovsky, and apparently at least two other teams did not like Wright enough to go with other players (including another center).

As for what essentially became Dach for Romanov, I agree that the value of that trade is questionable.  They might have been better off keeping the pick as there are a lot of questions about Dach, even though he's only 21.  If Dach pans out at least as a legitimate 2C behind Suzuki, then this might end up being a decent trade for MTL, but even then the value of Romanov, the 13th OA, the 66th OA, AND the 98th OA would still presumably be a pretty steep price for a 2C.

I can see a team like Buffalo making a play on Brent Burns. That team looks like they want to take a step forward. They have cap space (over 13 million in cap this season, more this offseason). Could absorb Burns' cap hit and he'd be a good mentor for both Dahlin & Power. Burns contract will end just as Power's ELC will end just as Burns's contract ends. Seems like a good fit, though I'm not sure Burns will waive his NTC to go to Buffalo.

I have no idea who would take Karlsson. Maybe Ottawa wants him back?!?
