I can't find the clip, but a few games ago, after the game that was streamed US nationally on TNT, Tocchet did about a 20 mins postgame with his old buddies.
The subject if Hughes' ice time came up. Here's my (paraphrased) memory ...
"I want him to come off after 55 to 65 seconds on the 1st Powerplay, but if there's puck control he'll stay out until there's a whistle or an uncontested D clear into our zone. Then 30 seconds after every shift he's giving me the look "Coach, I'm ready". The kid wants to play 40 minutes every game. I have a hard time managing him down below 30 let alone 22-24"
So in our rush to condemn management, consider this ... Hughes might just be unmanageable. And as has been alluded to, he is such an effortless skater that his 30 minutes might equate to most D-men's 20 minutes
