2018-19 Utica Comets Thread
Googlie replied to stonecoldstevebernier's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Leadership is being provided by 2 veterans, neither of them Canucks property: Carter Bancks, 29 yrs old (third year as Captain) - see: http://www.uticacomets.com/players/detail/bancks and Jamie Sifers (36 in January) - Calder Cup winner 3 years ago. See: http://www.uticacomets.com/players/detail/sifers Problem isn't coaching, or leadership, or lack of commitment by the players - it's the same as with the big club. Injuries, and the call-up domino effect of Canucks' injuries. Lose your entire 1st line (Gaudette between Archibald and Boucher), your top 2 goalies, and key defensemen for 2 or 3 games at a time, and it becomes hard to score and to defend. By far the worst goals differential in the entire league (where they rank 29 out of 31 teams - 30th if using winning %) with 49 goals for and 69 against. Send Gaudette, Archibald and Gaunce back down, and with Boucher's return, things would turn around quickly. Cull can't make Ming vases out of goats' turds !! -

Thanks Sid for posting the goals. If I knew how to do it without it just being a txt link, I would. But I don't, so I don't (if that makes sense) -

Beginning of the season I bought the AHL one team package. Very impressed this year versus last. All feeds Hi def, and I just watch on my tablet while multitasking (usually one eye on TV and the other on these boards) -

Yeah, you are right. I think maybe in his mind he doesn't believe any teammates can keep up with him so he doesn't utilize them the way, say, a Virtanen does. But when he reaches the end boards on one of his solo breakneck speed rushes there must be a couple of forwards and maybe a D reaching the slot that can receive a pass, but he doesn't seem to be aware of them. -

Not so much that, as I think he would shine more with NHL calibre forwards to receive his passes. But he does need to hone his defensive game. Can get knocked off the puck with a hard forecheck. But his srengths are definitely his "vision" - skating, positioning and passing. He is so fluid when on the move - reminds me a little of Bret Hedican with his stride, but maybe a shade slower. Great acceleration from a standstill though. -

Watching almost all the games this season, I am seeing a disturbing trend developing among a few of our players. Everyone wants to impress, score, and get the call up to the bigs, resulting in a few selfish "try to do everything myself" attempts rather than utilize the teammates. (A notable exception is Dahlen, who imo needs to shoot more rather than pass off). Maybe they were better when Boucher was around, as they seemed always to try to find him to let him unleash his snipes, and may revert to form when he returns. Some random thoughts: Most NHL ready forward. - MacEwen. Size, speed, abrasiveness, good hands, good backchecker and tied now with Boucher for team lead in points Insane speed - Carcone (imagine Jake with afterburners) Most surprising: Arsenau (fast, scrappy, and not even Canucks property) Most NHL ready D-man: Beezer (not OJ - see below) Most wasted asset: Juolevi (1 out of 3 outlet passes tape to tape, great scoring rush; 1 out of 3 bobbled and lost by the passee (?) and 1 in 3 picked off Most visible/mentioned any night: MacEwen, Kero, Woods, Dahlen, Carcone, among forwards, and Brisebois, Joulevi and Chatfield among defensemen Kulbakov (again not Canucks property) pretty useful goaltender - very athletic although tends to overdo the puckhandling (often clears right into trouble having to scramble back) Gadjovich invisible most nights, Palmu hustles but that's about it, Jasek, MacMaster and Woods need to use their linemates more Powerplay an adventurs - just as likely to concede a shorty as to score Not the same team without Boucher, Gaudette and Archibald (their season-starting complete 1st line and 1st unit PP) -

Utica beats Hartford 4 - 3 in a shootout. Were up 1 - 0, then gave up 3 goals, but bounced back in the final 5 minutes for a 3-3 regulation tie, but took at penalty at the end of regulation, so had to kill off a full 2 minutes of 4 vs 3. -

Patrick Johnston in todays Province: There’s still lots to come, but the signs are good for Pettersson. Under the six-step SCAT5 return-to-play protocol developed by the Concussion in Sport Group — a collection of 11 major global sports organizations, including the International Ice Hockey Federation — Pettersson is still a number of days away from returning. First of all, he had to have to be symptom-free for at least 24 hours while doing his usual daily routines, the ones that don’t involve sports. Obviously he’s past that, since he’s been doing physical activity the last few days. To work his way back into activity, he’ll have started with Step 2, which allows for light aerobic exercise. Step 3 is sport-specific exercise, where Pettersson may be already. Step 4 involves non-contact training; Step 5 is a full practice. You spend at least 24 hours in each step; if any symptoms return, then the athlete goes back to the previous step. As a result, it’s now normal for an athlete to take at least a week to return to action. Given that the Canucks plan to give him a couple of proper ice times with his teammates before he returns to action, it seems unlikely he’ll play in either of the upcoming home games against Boston on Saturday or Washington on Monday.

Wouldn't be surprised to see OJ and Chatfield arrive in the bigs together. - they have been developing great chemistry with each other in Utica

I splurged and bought the tv single team package. Pre the Gaudette call up, that 1st line with Gaud between Boucher and Archie was pretty potent
