I haven't seen much of this angst at all. Most people feel that we are in good place in regards to the draft, especially with Hughes being ineligible. Did this require a thread?

(Discussion) Nils Lundkvist
Noble 6 replied to 48MPHSlapShot's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I'm saying that the ask for the asset would be greater than the actual value of the asset. If the Canucks were trading Woo, they could ask for O'Reilly. That doesn't mean the trade would actually happen. Minnesota reportedly asked for Boeser in return for Zucker. Obviously the ask was greater than the value so the Canucks declined. -

They would definitely ask for Boeser, and we would hang up. That's why Lundkvist won't be moved. -

I don't think they're going to jump the gun on solidifying their RD position (arguably the toughest for a GM to lock down) long term by moving one of the better defense prospects in the league before giving him a chance to show what he can do. That's the complete opposite of what they did with their goalies; they now have 3 and can trade one for a good return. Besides, why not sell high on DeAngelo? He's having a breakout year and they could have a younger, cheaper replacement right away with Lundkvist. -

This is the kind of player we could have landed with an extra 1st rounder in 2018. The Rangers had 3 that year and landed two promising defensemen past 20th overall in that draft (Miller and Lundkvist). Lundkvist's value is at an all time high right now. He's having the 2nd best season for a U20 defenseman in the SHL since 2000 I believe (behind Hedman). Now is not the time to look into acquiring him. They'd want something like Boeser. They have absolutely no reason to move him. Besides, I think we should be looking for a right handed defenseman with a different skillset. We already have Hughes and potentially Juolevi as skilled puck movers, but we don't have a young, shut down player. Someone in the mold of Dobson is who I'd be going after. -
[Report] Anaheim Willing to Take Bad Contracts
Noble 6 replied to Provost's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I agree that we need to make some cap moves, but I don't think we need to include anyone as valuable as Demko or Juolevi to get it done. The two contracts we would need to move (at minimum) for next year would be Sutter and Baertschi. Sutter could probably be moved to a team like Anaheim or Ottawa even if we have to retain a bit. We can afford to attach a prospect like Madden (don't see much room for him down the middle moving forward and we have a surplus of wingers already) to that deal and get a mid round pick in return. Definitely not ideal and could've been avoided, but not horrible. Baertschi likely won't be as tough to move given that he's younger, cheaper and has already passed through waivers. There were rumours that Montreal was interested in him before they picked up Kovaluchuk, so maybe we could circle back there. I'd expect something like Baertschi + 3rd/4th for a late round pick. There's also the fantasy that Eriksson could retire after receiving his July 1st signing bonus. In theory, the idea would be that Benning agreed to keep Eriksson in the NHL for this year to collect his NHL salary on the condition that he retires at the end of the year. It would explain how Eriksson made the team despite absolutely terrible play to start the year and Green reportedly wanting to send him down. It would also explain his recent hot streak; he's trying to end his career on a high note. It would also explain why Benning is so confident that the cap will be worked out despite clear evidence to the contrary (or he's just overlooking it). There's absolutely no evidence of this though and it's just a hope more than anything else. If Eriksson doesn't retire, then he should definitely be sent down next year. -
Just call up Baertschi or Goldobin.

I'm interested to see if Madden will sign after this season and how strong the push to sign him will be. Another year in college definitely wouldn't hurt, but I think he could have an alright year in Utica next season adjusting to the pro game. The sooner that adjustment is made, the sooner the Canucks get an ELC on the roster. Plus, it would help address Utica's lack of centers.
-
The other thing to consider with Lockwood besides his lack of production is his injury history. He's had 2 shoulder injuries in college, which would affect a physical, tenacious player.

Proposal: St. Louis/Vancouver
Noble 6 replied to kenhodgejr's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
The value here is bad for St. Louis. -
What do you mean Washington is out of the Playoffs?
-
Gunnarwolfe Fonatine definitely looks like an intriguing mid round pick. You know who else was right near the top of the USHL goal scoring race in their draft year? Brock Boeser. The fact that he's committed to North Eastern is a positive too. They are more willing to play young players higher in the lineup. Gaudette, Madden and McDonough have already seen the benefits of this. Also, he's a lock on the all name team.
-
Don't forget that Rafferty did make in impression at training camp this year before his (so far) great season. He was calm, smooth, smart and didn't look out of place. He was someone who earned praise from Benning. That has probably stuck with Benning and his season has shown that it would be worth a look.
-
I just remember multiple times where he was on the ice with the Pettersson line and it was painfully obvious that he couldn't make a play besides shooting wildly.
-
It looks like you just balanced numbers and the trade was secondary. Unless you want Subban to take Hughes' spot on the first powerplay unit here he isn't going to do much besides bleed chances against. We already have Myers for that on the right side. People seem to already have forgotten how incredibly horrible our defense was for the last 4-ish years. Our current defense core is much better than anything else we've had under Benning and this deal would be a step backwards.

[Discussion] Athanasiou from Detroit
Noble 6 replied to Provost's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
We need defensemen way more than forwards in the short and long term. -
I like the target, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for either team. The Canucks are already overflowing with middle/bottom 6 forwards and Wood would simply be thrown on to the pile, although he probably an upgrade on some of our current options. This trade simply compounds the situation for us. For New Jersey, I don't think that is enough value for them to bite. Getting a pick back does help them, but not enough to take back what is currently dead cap as well. They have no real reason to trade Wood; it would be similar to us trading Virtanen.

Tanev's health this year could lend itself to this year being an outlier, but whether it's with an injured Tanev or an inferior player it looks like that spot will be downgraded next year. Tryamkin has not proven anything until he comes back and shows it in the NHL, but he's more likely a replacement for Stetcher. Pettersson, Horvat, Boeser, etc. improving have nothing to do with replacing Tanev. Hughes will likely improve but Tanev is a great fit for him. The improvement we see in Hughes likely won't be enough to offset a different caliber of player beside him. As good as he's been, we don't need to throw him to the wolves even more than we already have. Most of those defense prospects you listed are replacement level. Juolevi is a complete wildcard right now, I don't think anyone should be relying on him to do anything right now. Leivo is someone that our coach trusts and was having a pretty good stretch right before he got injured. Losing him for nothing makes us a worse team. I think the easiest thing to do would be to get rid of Sutter, even if we have to pay a team a small amount to take him.
-
Alright, but that team is not as good as our current team. We'd be taking a step back. Virtanen could be in the 2-3 million range depending on the type of deal.
-
Players like Crosby and Malkin leave a huge void when they are out, but not even that can offset what they bring when they are in. It's about evaluating the benefits and drawbacks of the situation. Having a healthy Crosby in the lineup outweighs pretty much all drawbacks (dead cap, lineup replacements, etc.). Having a healthy Sutter in the lineup does not. They are two separate, incomparable things.

My bad. I thought you were referring to how Pittsburgh is top 5 in the standings so far this season despite suffering through a large amount of injuries. Comparing our injury riddles players to Crosby and Malkin is insane. Evaluating the risk/reward for a healthy Crosby and Malkin is a lot different than it is for a healthy Sutter and Ferland. They are not comparable. If Pettersson had sustained another injury our two this year, he would still be worth keeping around. Boeser, after 2 wrist surgeries (I believe it's 2) and a major back injury, is still worth keeping around. Their impact on the team is that big. However, Sutter's is not and it is/was not worth keeping him.

Having two players who can each single handedly carry a franchise into the Playoffs is the difference for them.

Are you guys seriously so emotionally invested in flaming hfboards that you will bring them up out of nowhere on a different website in an unrelated thread so you can get in a circle and bash a handful of posters? If people on the internet can make you this uncomfortable then maybe it's time to unplug for a while.
-
Vilardi would be similar in the sense that he was touted as someone who could play physical along the boards and still smart and skilled enough to make a play. Crosby wins battles too, you can still be smart if you're a physical player.
-
You're blowing this way out of proportion. I was simply saying that there's no point in speculating in possible alternative outcomes because an opposite outcome can just as easily be created. Even if you want to believe that Tkachuk on our team would be wildly inferior to the one we see in Calgary, I'd still take that. If he can make an impact with Backlund and Frolik then I'm sure he'd be fine with Pettersson/Boeser or Horvat.
