2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

Scenario: Hischier goes first overall. Philly isn't sold on Patrick recovering fully from his injuries and believes they will linger, so they take Vilardi who can still step in soon on an ELC. That leaves Patrick at #3. Now, if our medical staff believes he will be fine as long as he is treated properly, how much would you be willing to trade for that 3rd overall pick? Dallas would probably want Tanev + both of our 2nds. That's a steep price to pay. If we could keep our 33rd overall pick and take Lehtonen/Niemi while adding another later pick, I would be all over it. I would probably consider it even if we did end up having to give up both of our seconds. -

At 33 I would want Yammamoto, Oettinger, Anderson-Dolan, Thomas or Brannstrom. I was able to watch Yammamoto live earlier in the year. He was always the most dangerous player with the puck. He evaded defenders pretty well when he had the puck with quick turns. He was feeding passes to open teammates within the zone all night. He's more of a lottery pick, but I would be very happy if we got him at 33. -
I'm not going to lie, I really didn't put much stock into exactly what he was saying. I was just surprised that he had actually gone and looked something up for himself and presented by by himself. I've ripped on Alf before so I wanted to make sure I pumped his tires this time. Your argument makes sense though.

Good job finding evidence to support your position man. I think your posts should look more like this instead of constantly asking other people questions. You can be quite informative when you want to be.

I think there's a rumour going around that Patrick might not be 100% healthy and might not be able to participate fully in the combine. Absolutely no evidence to support this other than a poster saying the same thing on HFBoards. If teams ahead of us are scared off by his health, I think he would absolutely be worth the risk at 5th overall. -
Yup, it'll take him some time to adjust his game to the next level. It won't be as easy for him to make the simple plays and defend effectively. I think his anticipation is a good thing, but again it'll take some time to learn to read the faster pro game.

I've watched Chatfield probably 5-6 times now. He's always thinking the game the simple and effective way. He battles really hard, he simply outworks people for loose pucks quite a bit. His skating is pretty good in terms of speed and acceleration. There were a couple times in this game where he got the puck off the faceoff in the defensive zone and he just took off with it, even when he was shorthanded. There were some times when he mishandled the puck, but I think I noticed those plays more simply because he was on the ice a lot. I think he'll have a good 2-3 years in Utica before he challenges for a spot out of camp. He'll probably need some time to figure out how to play against men. He can't win board battles the same way that he does as an older player in Junior. Net front battles are also even harder for a younger player who's not huge in the first place. I'm not too sure how Utica's defense is shaping up, but I could see a top pairing of McEneny - Chatfield in a year or two. If he plays with Brisebois in his first year, I wouldn't be surprised to see them get more minutes than some people expect. Great pickup for us.

And an assist on the ensuing powerplay. Nice cross-crease pass. -

Great shift after a goal against for Vilardi. He drew a penalty and almost made a pass in front. He stole the puck nicely twice and then held off is defender, who was forced to take a penalty reaching in. Shifts like that make him my number 1 choice at 5th. He just needs to do that more consistently. -

Necas is someone who I am a little bit split on. His skating is great. He has a very good top speed and his edgework is top notch. He always looks balanced on his skates and generates good power from his lower body. He's good at carrying the puck through the neutral zone with speed and finding the open spots and lanes within the zone. He works hard on the backcheck and is a good two-way player. Benning's comments about "European skill and North American heart" fit Necas pretty well. He was a leader for his Czech team in the international games he played. He would fit in nicely with Horvat and ideally give us a left-handed and a right-handed center in our top-6. What Horvat has in size, Necas has in skating. It would be a nice pair of complimentary centers. With all that said, I'm not sure if some of his skills are elite enough for him to become more than an effective middle-6 center. There have been comparisons to Giroux with Necas and I think that is an okay one. The framework of their game is somewhat similar. However, Necas probably won't have the same high end offensive tools as him. Giroux displays more skill, a better shot and more creativity than Necas likely will. For that reason, I think the most likely scenario for Necas' NHL career would be an effective middle-6 center in the mold of Sutter, just transfer the shooting ability of Sutter to the playmaking abilities of Necas. There is still the chance that he could be Tyler Johnson level player, but it might be more of an outside chance. I'm not as sold on Necas as I originally was. I would still definitely consider him at 5th overall, bit I'd be iffy on actually taking him. His speed and physical tools are really put on display in these videos. -
Chatfield just took a hard hit and seemed to be in a fair bit of pain. Hopefully it's just a stinger and he can shake it off. EDIT: He just came back and rocked DeBrincat.

Of course if he exceeds my expectations I won't be mad, but I wouldn't put that kind of pressure on the kid.

So the score is 5-2 Erie after the first period... -
My jaw dropped when I saw that. Seattle really needed that and they couldn't get anything. It was great killing and goaltending.
-
I would temper the expectations a little bit. I don't think he'll be a center long term given his skating and lack of size. I don't think he has that "elite" hockey IQ to be our answer for one of the top 6 center spots. As a winger, he can play that hardworking game along the boards, using his edgework and puck protection to make plays. I see him as an Arvidsson type player, but probably not as good. I would be expecting a solid middle 6 player.

Chatfield had a good, but not outstanding game today. He jumped up in the play a lot and made some plays to hold the puck in. The Sea Dogs were really making sure they got a hit on him whenever they could, especially in the 1st period. It didn't look like he spent too much time in his own end and he moved the puck well for the most part. He had one or two times when he bobbled the puck but it didn't end up hurting him. After the game, the panel was talking about him being one of the best shot-suppression defenseman in the OHL. Of course, the highlight of his game was him in the penalty box. Someone with Twitter can probably find it.

*SPOILER ALERT FOR THE WINDSOR - ST. JOHN GAME!* Vilardi didn't have a particularly noticeable game today. Windsor won 3-2; they were up 3-0 until there was about 3 minutes left in the 3rd and St. John got 2 quick ones. They held the fort for the rest of the way. His line had a couple of good shifts in the first period, but didn't generate much offense. They just held it in the Sea Dog's end. He had a good shift on the PK where he kept possession around the offensive zone, threw the puck back into his own zone to kill time and got open again to kill off a good chunk of the penalty. Hopefully he can contribute a bit more next game. There one really subtle play that I noticed. Vilardi was turning back on the backcheck and was doing crossovers around the bottom of the faceoff circle in St. John's end. He had some time to generate some power and momentum, but everyone seemed to pull away from him. Even if he is known as not a great skater, I would expect him to be able to generate more power on such a perfect path back into the play. It was just one small play, but I didn't like the way it looked. Hopefully he can display a bit more jump next game. Some other things I noticed in this game: - Chabot played a lot and looks pretty good. - Sergachev had a rush in the first period where he weaved through the neutral zone and drove wide before getting rubbed out hard and drawing a penalty. - Velano looked decent but a little tentative. He was used on the PP a lot and had some zone time. He's a prospect for the 2018 draft. -
So Chatfield just threw up in the penalty box...

Vilardi's line had a couple shifts in the other teams end but wasn't too threatening. He was great on the PK eating up time. -
He had a Grade A chance in the first 7-10 minutes when he was all alone backdoor on the rush but couldn't convert. Windsor scored on the PP a little later though. It's been 44 days since the Spitfires last game but they looked pretty good, not a lot of rust.

Can't wait to watch Vilardi at the Memorial Cup if I have some time. -
I don't mind signing him to a one-year deal at ~1 million.

It seems that people are divided on Vilardi. I really like him and would not be upset with him at all. He is an absolute bull on the puck and can protect it against anybody. He's great at keeping at least part of his big frame in between that puck and the defenseman while using his edges and reach to create space for himself. It's a style of play that will probably translate very well to the NHL once he adapts to the difference in physical ability. He holds on to the puck until a play opens up and he keeps his head up to make that play. His style of play combined with his size and skill make him a very intriguing guy for me at least. I see him as more of a winger, but that's mostly because I really like the idea of having him and Horvat on a line together. Those two would be impossible to knock off the puck and could generate so much offense from below the goal line. Of course, having a big, strong, skilled player on each of our top-2 lines doesn't sounds so bad either. If Vilardi wouldn't be playing with Horvat, I would still probably see him as more of a winger. The are he needs to improve in is his skating. His edgework down low his good and he can make those quick turns to lose a guy, but his straight line speed is not very good it all. There was one time I was watching him play against London and he had a great opportunity where the puck was dumped out of the zone to the London blue line. Vilardi had a straight line to the puck from his blue line while the defenseman started from inside the Windsor blue line next to the bench. He ended up beating Vilardi to the puck on the other side of the ice. That's not very good at all. If he can work on his explosiveness, coordination and flexibility he should be able to get at least close to average in the NHL, similar to Draisaitl. -

He would bring in that missing element to our team. The sheer amount of ice he can cover on a single rush is pretty amazing. I agree that having someone like that on your team keeps the other team at bay because he can beat them with a single pass. One play that they weren't expecting and failed to adjust to results in a breakaway the other way. We could have someone like that on the ice most of the game with him and Juolevi.
