Seems like he didn't get a lot of ice time, which is unfortunate. It's only his first game though and he has to get used to the system as well as his teammates. Does anyone one have a write up of how he played and how he looked?

2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

I was going to post a lengthier post earlier but my computer crashed so I'm probably gonna keep this shorter. I got a chance to watch Yamamoto and Anderson-Dolan play today. They were the 2 best players and the best line as Spokane played agaisnt Victoria. The game was a little chippy as the two teams had played each other a lot recently. Yamamoto was very shifty on his edges. He was a threat every time he was in the offensive zone. He creates space for himself well as he is always in a threatening position to pass the puck. He made a great play on the powerplay. He had the puck on the right side and moved in. He completely looked off all of the Royal's penalty killers and fed a beautiful sauce across but the goalie Outhouse made a big stop. Another time, he beat a player to the puck and had a one on one. He completely undressed the defender and cut inside before being stopped on the backhand. He was a driver of offense and controlled the flow of play when he had the puck. He did seem to be cheating towards offense and leaving the zone early, but I guess that's necessary when your line is responsible for more than half of your teams offense. Yamamoto was a marked man from the very first shift. The Royals were taking liberties on him at every opportunity, but Yamamoto seemed to be pesky himself. He completely ran the goalie after the whistle was gone and took a penalty. After every hit he absorbed, he made sure to give back a slash. He doesn't seem to take much from anybody. Anderson-Dolan was also good. He wasn't as flashy as Yamamoto, but he was consistently making good plays in the offensive zone. He retrieved pucks well and kept possession. He and Yamamoto were reading off each other well and we're finding each other on the rush and in the zone. Overall, I'd say Yamamoto would be a good high risk, high reward player in the 2nd half of the 1st round. Anderson-Dolan would be a solid center to pick up in the same range. If the Canucks land a late 1st, Yamamoto could be a guy they take a risk on if they feel comfortable with who they got with their own pick. Side note, 2018 draft eligible Ty Smith looked decent out there as well for Spokane. He has 28 points in 58 games and plays on the top powerplay unit as well as playing on the penalty kill. He made one noticeably bad unforced turnover that led to a chance. He also could have tied his man up better on the OT winner. Overall though, he looked pretty good for a rookie WHL defenseman. Will be a name to watch for next year. -
2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

They were probably similar in terms of their skating. I imagine Vilardi could improve his skating to around the same level as Draisaitl moving forward. Probably not as much as Horvat though. -
I think his play style is pretty similar to Drouin's. He probably won't reach that same level, but I see a similar player. Also, what he's wearing really shouldn't be a concern unless it's offensive.

I was able to catch most of the London and Windsor game earlier today. Sergachyov was creating offense from the blue line and driving it straight to the net, which led to a goal. Brown was playing a good skill game. Bracco was flying. But Vilardi also played very well. Vilardi is noticeably bigger than a lot of players. Windsor is a big team. He was protecting the puck and creating offense down low consistently. When he had the puck, he would shake off defenders with quick spins and put them on his hip. None of the defenders could touch him. He set up some good chances and got at least one point by giving it to Sergachyov who drove the net from the point (I didn't check the box score so I don't know the point totals). His skating seemed good in tight spaces. Looks to have good feet. His skating form definitely looks like it has a solid foundation and just needs to be improved. I'm not sure if he'll improve as much as Horvat, but he should get at least a little faster in straight line speed. However, for the game he plays, he seems fine. I would like to point out that he definitely seems like a winger at the next level. A good complimentary piece to add to a future top 6. Tying this to the Canucks, I think if we were to draft him, he would have to play with Horvat to have any success. They are both big, strong players that can play down low. They are both smart players, but get it to the net at the end of the day. For that reason, I don't think we should draft him, despite the fact that he is a good player. We have plenty of players fighting for those middle 6 spots now, so we should go with someone else. Also, we are not a very fast team yet. Despite the fact that Vilardi's game doesn't require super speed, I don't think that would fit in with our pre-existing forward group. Overall, looks like a good players, but doesn't really fit in with the Canucks in my opinion. -
I was able to catch most of today's game. Overall, Juolevi had a pretty ordinary game. He took a penalty in the 3rd that the Spitfires capitalized on (at least I'm pretty sure they did). Other than that, he was solid as usual. There were a couple of times that Juolevi made a play that his teammates weren't completely ready for. One time, Juolevi had the puck at the point. He loaded up the wrist shot, but at the last second put it to an open teammate who wasn't ready for it. I can't help but think that if it was Boeser he was passing it to it would've been buried. You can see that he likes to play the possession game in the offensive zone. He had at least one shift where they had some good zone time and he was making plays. Overall, pretty usual stuff for his standards. I dont watch every London game, but it seems that Juolevi's minutes were down from the last time I watched them play. I'm not sure if that's him just playing his quiet game or if he actually is having his ice time reduced. Also, the last game I watched Juolevi absorbed 2 pretty big hits. He took another decent sized check today. I know it's impossible to go the whole game with physical contact, but I would think that with his IQ, skating and pedigree he would be avoiding those big collisions for the most part. I'm not sure if he's only been hit like that 3 times all season and I just happened to see all 3, but it worries me that he could recieve a hit like that from a full sized NHL player. I hope he doesn't have an injury riddled career like Maatta has had so far. The commentators also compared is play style to Lidstrom, saying that he would never lay a big hit or a flashy goal, but the other team never seems to get any chances while he's on the ice. I know thay comparison has been run into the ground, but take it for what it's worth. Overall, a decent game for our prized Fin.

Alright that's good. Watching him play, he looks a lot like Zetterberg. The way that he consistently makes the simple, good play. I realize his defense will likely not be as good as that, but that's who I see. The modern day version of him, not as strong but faster. -

Does anyone know exactly how good or bad Hischier's defensive game is? I had heard that it was very good, but I've also heard that he's more of a pure offense player. -
I'm excited to see him play his first game for us. He seems to have a nice offensive foundation with great stickhandling, agility and vision. He really uses his hips well to deceive defenders and move to open spaces, but that seems to be when he has a little bit of time. Benning also said he's good at protecting and shooting the puck. I'm not expecting anything production wise for this season, I just want to see his potential. Hopefully he can play on a line with someone who can read off of him: Sedin - Sedin - Eriksson Baertschi - Horvat - Boucher Granlund - Sutter - Goldobin Skille - Gaunce - Megna Chaput Next year seems a lot more interesting now. We have a pretty young forward group with Horvat, Baertschi, Granlund being locks while Goldobin, Boeser, Gaunce, Boucher and Cramarossa could all be vying for position as well. Rodin, Megna, Skille and/or Chaput could return as well. Virtanen will most likely spend another year in the AHL. I think Boeser might make the team out of camp and then get sent down early in the year, similar to Conner in Winnipeg. Hopefully Goldobin can start to display his ability next year after settling in for the rest of this season: Sedin - Sedin - Eriksson Baertschi - Horvat - Goldobin Granlund - Sutter - Boucher Cramarossa - Gaunce - Dorsett
-
Playing Horvat as our 1C definitely isn't terrible, but I would hope that we are able to land an offensive catalyst who can put up points ahead of Horvat. That would give us a 1-2 punch similar to the one we had in 2011 with Henrik and Kesler. I've maintained that he could be our 1C for a while, and I think your right on the potential Bergeron level impact (personally, I think his playstyle if more similar to a stronger, less agile Toews). I think your also right in assuming that all of Granlund, Gaunce and Baertschi won't be here long term. I haven't read up on Aston-Reese, but everyone seems to be going crazy for him. If we can land him then we are for sure better. Personally, I think if we land a 1C like Patrick or Hischier, the need for a top line LW goes down a bit as the center will be the one driving that line. We could then just pick up a piece to compliment him and build with depth. Who knows, maybe if we land that 1C Dahlen could be the one playing with him
-
I should clarify: I meant he could be similar to Granlund in terms of potential impact on the team. Dahlen definitely plays a more offensive game compared to Granlund's 2 way game. I was talking about how I think Dahlin could be a good middle 6 guy like Granlund. It was my fault, I should have specified. My apologies. You bring up some good points on Dahlen though. For me, the biggest thing is his skating. He doesn't have to be elite, but I think he should definitely work on it extensively over the next 1-2 years. He seems to have good instincts on the attack, but I think he could take advantage of more if his skating improves. I'm curious, how do you see our prospect pool looking? I'm thinking something along the lines of: _______ - _______ - Boeser Baertschi - Horvat - _______ Dahlen - Gaudette - Virtanen Granlund - Gaunce - Lockwood Juolevi - Gudbranson Hutton - Tanev (only vet) Tryamkin - Stetcher Brisebois Demko Markstrom That looks like some solid depth, especially if we can find a better center than Horvat. If not, then we deploy him as our 1C.
-
I definitely think this was a good trade, but I'm not expecting anything more than a Granlund level player out of Dahlen. It would be about the same value, around a 2nd. That's still a good pickup, but I'm seeing someone similar to Granlund, although if he proves to be better than that I won't be complaining.

That's what it would cost to move up to 1st overall next year. I'm not sure if it's worth it myself, I was just spitballing ideas. Again, just spitballing ideas. I'm usually not for trading prospects, especially ones we've drafted recently, but Dahlin might be an cause an exception. He would be an upgrade over Liljegren. The thing is, Liljegren probably won't be a franchise defenseman, so he is worth less than Dahlin, who probably will. If Liljegren was in the same tier as Dahlin, then it's a lateral move between those two with Boeser and a high 1st added on. Adding Liljegren to the deal would compensate whoever was picking 1st overall by giving them a defenseman with elite potential to somewhat replace a defenseman with franchise potential. The other pieces would balance out the value. I knew bringing up the possibility of trading Boeser would not go over well, but I'm not saying we should trade him for scraps. -

It's the 1st overall pick. It's not like it would be for a regular 1st. It's also for a potential franchise defenseman. Even if Boeser exceeds all expectations and becomes a franchise winger, I would still rather have the franchise defenseman. -

I'm hoping that Liljegren falls to us if we aren't in the top 3. It looks like it could be a possibility and it would be huge for us if we could get a prospect like that outside the top 3. Our D-core would be set with a great mix of offensive puck movers and big, stay at home guys. This is getting extremely optimistic, but if we draft Liljegren this year, maybe we could offer a package including him for 1st overall next year and land Dahlin. Something like Liljegren + 1st 2018 + Boeser. Liljegren would be an elite offensive defenseman that they pass up in Dahlin, and they also get 2 other very good pieces. This is a hypothetical situation that could only happen if another hypothetical situation actually happens, so it is extremely unlikely. -
I've always considered Brisebois to be a solid bet at being a reliable, smooth defenseman at the NHL level. I would still put his ceiling as a #4 although if he moves beyond that it'll likely be due to chemistry with his partner. However, landing a #4/#5 defenseman in the 3rd round is great. I think his offense will wear off a little as he climbs the ranks and we would ultimately end up with a player who plays similarly to Hjaalmarson, which is very valuable. Maybe not quite the same impact as Hjaalmarson being that he is a solid #3, but a similar style of play.

I don't think there's any way Vegas would give us their 1st next year. Adding Patrick or Hischier wouldn't get them out of the gutter. They're gonna be at the bottom for a while before they have enough talent to crawl up the standings. I wouldn't bet on Colorado or Arizona giving it to us either. Again, adding Patrick or Hischier wouldn't improve their team enough to get them out of the gutter. Detroit obviously isn't known for giving away their prospects. They're known for the opposite. I think the teams that would be the most likely to take a bet like that would be Dallas, New Jersey, Tampa Bay, Winnipeg, Philadelphia or Buffalo. Even then it's pretty unlikely given the strength of the 2018 draft. I like the idea of loading up for next year, but other teams are probably thinking the same thing. Unless they already have a solid foundation and are missing one main piece or they were riddled with injuries this year, it's probably not even being considered. Toronto already had a solid foundation with Marner, Nylander, Zaitsev and Anderson being added to Reilly, Gardiner, Kadri, JVR, etc. so they probably aren't a great example. Compare what Toronto had pre draft with what Vegas, Arizona and/or Colorado has. -
I wasn't 100% sure but that's great news. Hopefully he can have a decent rookie season in the AHL and continue to improve his game for about 2-3 more years after that.
-
It's our current depth chart. Juolevi and Brisebois are in the CHL. They are also both likely to be back in the CHL next year (not 100% sure on Brisebois).
-
So with his emergence, how would you guys rank our current depth on defense? I think this will give me and some others who can't watch Comets games a good indicator of how he is playing. Depth Chart: Edler - Tanev Sbisa - Stetcher Hutton - Tryamkin Gudbranson ----------------------- Pedan Subban McEneny Does that look somewhat accurate?
-
Did Juolevi have knee surgery before his draft year? I didn't know that. That honestly worries me a little for his future as he will likely be taking some punishment for us for a while.
-
Does anyone who has watched him have play have any projections and/or comparisons for this guy? It's great to hear that he's been developing well and blossoming into a legitimate player for the Comets.

Sounds like an offensive defenseman we could be targeting with our 2nd rounder. -

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=188337 I had never heard of him until I saw that post. I'm not sure about rankings and why he hasn't shown up on those. He's playing on the same team as Neill and Brisebois, so our staff has probably gotten some extra looks at him. -
