2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017
Noble 6 replied to hyper00's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
There was a guy on HFBoards who claimed he has some inside information. Apparently he said that the Canucks were higher on Juolevi than Tkachuk at this time last year. People over there seem to be taking him somewhat seriously as he has been right in the past, but take this all with a grain of salt. He said that they have players ranked in different categories. Categories like "offensive forwards," "2-way forwards," offensive defensemen," etc. (which is not hard to believe). Reading in between the lines a little bit, you can gather some information. This information is all from him: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Offensive Forwards: 1) Hischier 2) Tippet 3) _______ 4) _______ 5) Mittlestadt 6) _______ 7) _______ 8) Vilardi He seems to know that Hischier and Tippet are the top 2 in this category, and Vilardi is at 8th. He also says that we have Yammamoto somewhere ahead of Vilardi, but not sure if that means he could also be above Mittlestadt. 2-Way Forwards: 1) Patrick 2) Necas 3) _______ 4) Rasmussen Patrick is obviously 1st, but he says we are very high on Necas. Rasmussen also comes in at 4th on this list. Offensive Defensemen: 1) Liljegren 2) Makar 3) Joseph He has them in this order. Defensive Defensmen: Hague He didn't include a ranking, but said that they have Hague listed as a defensive defenseman. 2-Way Defensemen: 1) ________ 2) Valimaki 3) Foote He said Foote was #3 and then in a later reply revealed that Valimaki is at #2. Other Notes: He really stressed how picks 4-16 are equal. There is absolutely no difference other than personal preference/team need in that range. Patrick and Hischier should be the first two forwards gone (duh) and Liljegren should be the first defenseman gone. There has been chatter on Tippet and they might be high on him. He says Necas, Rasmussen, Tippet and/or Petterson are likely the preferred players outside the top 3. That's all the information he gave. Take it all with a grain of salt. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Personally, I'm happy that they're considering Petterson. I'm also slightly pleased that we likely won't be taking Vilardi as his skating is a concern. I haven't seen Tippet a lot, but I have heard a lot of mixed reviews. His shot is apparently similar to Boeser's but he has been drawing a lot of Virtanen comparisons as a lower IQ player. -

Obviously if we win the lottery then we have nobody to trade up with... I was saying that if say Colorado won the lottery we could possibly work out a trade involving our 1st, 2nd and Hutton for the 1st overall pick. If Arizona won the lottery a deal could be worked out involving the 1st overall pick and something small for our 1st and Tanev. Obviously if a different team wins the lottery then we would need to offer a different package, but those are the 2 most likely outcomes. As an idea in general though, I think trading up this year could come easier than other years, and we should capitalize if its not outrageous. -

I've talked about this before somewhere, but not in much detail. How do you guys feel about trading up to the top-2 spot this year? It would have been impossible the last couple of years with guys like McDavid, Eichel, Mathews, Laine, etc. on the board, but this year's top end talent is viewed as not being on that same level. Possibly this year a team would be more open to listening to offers for a top-2 pick. Let's go by the most likely scenario; Colorado wins the lottery and we pick say 6th. Would a trade along the lines of 1st + 2nd + Hutton be enough to move up and select Patrick or Hischier? Would you guys want to do that? If Arizona wins the lottery, a deal could likely be reached involving Tanev and our 1st along with something else from them. Would you guys be willing to pay to move up to the top-2 and get one of Patrick or Hischier in this draft? -
It sounds like it was a topic that was different than the usual media run through and one that was important to Jake. I think that's why he looked like he actually cared in that interview and was more articulate. It's probably a bit of both.

The two that I know the most about are Petterson and Foote. Petterson looks like he has a very high ceiling and would compliment our forwards really well. Foote would be a good addition to any team as he has a high probability of being a solid defenseman. Tolvanen looks decent, but I don't see him as anything more than a alright complimentary player. He would be most effective on the power play on the right circle. I'm hoping we can get someone with some more potential though. Glass sounds like he could be someone to look into. -

I would expect that his faceoff ability would not be good being a smaller and younger player. With his lack of strength, I would be expecting a winger as he might not be able to effectively contain bigger players in the defensive zone. If we could land him as a skilled, creative, offensive winger that would be great for us. The only thing that would worry me is that we have Baertschi who already plays he soft, skilled player on the left side. That means unless Petterson becomes a 1st line guy, he and Baertschi will be competing for the same spot. Even if we trade on of them eventually, we haven't added to our forward core. That seems reasonable. His defensive game is deemed good too, however. I just don't want people to see the high skill/weaker player and assume he doesn't play defense. -

He seems like he has a reasonable amount of risk for a very high reward. His awareness and playmaking ability would compliment our forward core very nicely with Horvat and Boeser. He would add some high end skill. I would be curious to hear if you think he's more of a center or a winger at the next level? -

This guy is becoming my favourite player in the draft. His hands an awareness are elite. I'm not too concerned about his size, and I think he should be equally focused on his edgework/explosiveness. He plays kind of like a taller, not as fast/quick Ehlers. -

To expand a little on Petterson, I found this video of him a couple minutes ago: You can really see his hands and skill level in a couple of these clips, working the toe drag and cutting inside. He doesn't look like he's ever gonna pack on an insane amount of muscle, but he should be able to fill out a bit. I think if he can work on his edgework and explosiveness so that he can really accelerate and separate himself from the opposition in tight in combination with those hands, he will be fine. -

This is who I was talking about. He has skill and hockey IQ and would compliment our forward core nicely. His size is obviously a concern at 150-160lbs but he has been putting up great numbers. His ppg is a healthy amount better than Forsberg, Burakovsky, Wennberg and some others. He is playing on the big ice surface, which would make it easier for a smaller player to succeed as they have more room to work with. However, if we give him 12-3 years in the AHL after the draft, he should be able to adapt to the NA ice as well as add some muscle, speed and agility to his game. All he needs to work on are some physical tools, which I would much rather have than a low IQ player. Petterson - Horvat - Boeser Baertschi - ______ - ______ Granlund - Gaudette - Virtanen Gaunce - Cassels - Lockwood -

Does anyone have any stats/numbers on Petterson? He sounds like a really intriguing player and the type of dynamic, skilled playmaker we need. His size is obviously a concern at around 150-160lbs, but at 6'1 he has a pretty decent frame to fill into. He would probably take a longer development path but I don't really mind if he is the best player. Does anyone have any comparables/matches for his numbers? -

Yeah he definitely has fallen. He was the undisputed top D in the draft before although the gap is probably shortening. I would still rank at #3 behind Hischier and Patrick because he still has the ceiling of being a #1 defenseman. He has the best chance of being the best defenseman of the draft I would say. Of course, that doesn't mean he WILL be, but he probably has the best odds. -

He's been dropping as he's been out with mono for a while. He was projected as the clear #2 behind Patrick before Hischier shot up the rankings. -

Colorado and Arizona have the bottom 2 locked up though. I would rather not rely on chance when there are for sure 2 teams and probably a couple more that will have better chances than us. But it if we win, I won't be complaining. -
Because I'm curious to see how the Comets lineup is projected to look next year and who Boeser could potentially be playing with while he's in the AHL. If Boeser comes up say during December to play the rest of the year with the Canucks, I would like to know who he could be playing with during October and November.
-
He'll be told that he will play in the NHL for the majority of the year. He already agreed to go back to UND for an extra year to develop more, so he would likely agree to starting in the AHL and then being brought up later.

I also like Foote. He's a physical beast that still has time to fill out. He doesn't play a flashy or super dynamic game, but a very professional game that could translate well as manroth19 pointed out. He could be a Gudbranson lite and a solid addition to any prospect pool. Obviously I would LOVE to land one of Hischier, Patrick or Liljegren. That doesn't look very realistic though. Petterson on is very interesting for me. He didn't really amaze at the WJC but is putting up very solid numbers in Sweden last I read. His weight/size are a little concerning as he's only something like 150-160lbs, but could be a highly skilled playmaker that we are looking for. I would for sure love to hear more about him and other people's opinions. -
I like the fact that Boeser is getting a short stint at center. It will likely give him more insights into the defensive side of the game and improve his overall understanding of the game as he learns certain responsibilities. I think he should be a winger in the NHL, but this is something that will turn out good for him in the long run I think. Looking ahead to next year, I would try to keep Boeser down in the AHL and re-evaluate at the midway point of the season. He will probably play some big minutes down there and get to taste professional hockey without being in the limelight. I'm not too familiar with Utica's lineup, but he could get to play with some good players as well: Grenier - Gaudette - Boeser ________ - ________ - Virtanen Hopefully someone with some knowledge of the Comets players and lineup can provide some more information, as I am curious to see how they shape up next year. They are supposed to get some good players.

Kostin might be someone who has a chance of falling far. If we got him with our 2nd it would be a steal similar to the Oilers getting Tyler Benson in the 2nd last year. I'm really warming up to Foote. He looks like a beast defensively that is good offensively. He still has room to fill out but is already a monster. He could be a Gudbranson lite. I think this year might be a good year to trade up to the top-3 of its there. The prices might be a bit lower this year as the top end isn't viewed as super elite. If we could trade for 2nd or 3rd overall and land one of Liljegren or Hischier it could be a great move. -
I think he definitely has the IQ and smarts to be able to do that. If you guys are referring specifically to today's game, it looked like any ability to do that was prevented by either his forwards not giving him options or Owen Sound simply relentlessly attacking the puck. In comparison, the Attack's defenseman would strip the London forward at the blue line, make a D to D pass and then quickly get it up to the forwards. But you guys are right. If he can learn to do that consistently and effectively, it will pretty much solidify his position as a #2. He's still young enough to learn that too.

Was able to catch the 1st and most of the 2nd period today. Owen Sound was clearly the better team. In the 1st, Lindon couldn't get anything going at all. Probably 15 of the 20 minutes was in London's end, and the other 5 mostly just play in the neutral zone. The Attack didn't quite dominate the 2nd to the same extent that they did the 1st, but London didn't look much better. Of course, they were missing some key players today, but Owen Sound was missing Sazuki as well. Probably just an off day. Juolevi was getting some good ice time. If I remember correctly, there was a long stretch without a whistle that he was on for and then he was put right back out after the commercial break. His forwards didn't give him many options on the breakout and the Attack were closing off a lot of lanes. They were battling hard and none of the Knights seemed to have an answer. There was a player who's name escapes me that took two solid runs at Juolevi and finished his check hard, but Olli rebounded and and continued playing. Overall as the teams play was not good today, Juolevi's game seemed to suffer as a result a little bit. He didn't play bad by any means, but the whole teams was a overwhelmed. I'll be interested in hearing if the Knights were able to regroup and maybe even tie it up in the 3rd!

This guy sounds like he could be a great 3C if he keeps improving. He seems to have some nice puck skills and vision, but nothing really elite. If he could turn into even a 4C for us, that would be great: _______ - Horvat - Boeser Baertschi - ______ - _______ Granlund - Sutter - Virtanen _______ - Gaudette - Lockwood

As of right now, I'm hoping we sign him at the end of this year. After a full summer of training, give him 9 games in the NHL. Then send him down to Utica for about a month. If he proves that he can stick with the Canucks, then bring him up. If he doesn't, let him stay in Utica and re-evaluate at the 41 game mark.

Your talking about right now. I'm talking about what he could do for us in his prime.
-
The way I see it, team toughness should still be a priority. Now, I don't mean filling our future with a bunch of 200+lbs goons, but more have that pack mentality throughout our team. A prime example would be the Laine hit. It took about 1.5 seconds before Scheiffle, the teams #1 center and arguably best young player, was into it with McCabbe. The whole team went to send a message that you can't mess with their rookie star. That's the kind of team I want to build. Virtanen fits in as the catalyst of this mentality. To me, Virtanen's value can't be measured by goals, assists, PIMs or even hits. It's the difference in mentality that he could provide for us, even in a 3rd line role, that makes him truly valuable. Teams should consider that Virtanen could be after them for the rest of the game before stepping up on one of our better players. He already established himself as a big hitter in his rookie year, which is more than I wanted. Now he just needs to learn how to bring it consistently. I think if we had Ehlers or another top-10 pick from 2014, I would be very happy with that. But picking Virtanen at that spot at that time does make some sense. That was the first year of our general decline as an organization. It made sense to pick the player that was going to take longer to develop (not based on being a power forward, but based on IQ/maturity) as we would realistically have chances in the future to pick high end skill players. Of course we needed to address our defense first. By doing that, in theory, our new core would all hopefully come into their own at around the same time, which would hopefully set us up as a contender.
