Totally agree. It's no coincidence that Marky left here a star and has had a, less than stellar start as a Flame. Demko, on the other hand, has flourished under Clarke's tutelage and has many, at least, mentioning him in Vezina talks. Not re-signing Clarke would be another big mistake chalked up by Benning.

Yet another Canucks prospect I'm excited about. Great chance we're going to be seeing another core piece here.

Anyone know if the Worlds are happening?

What team have you been watching? Pearson's been there for 2 seasons now. Management likes him there, teammates like him there. If he re-signs, I can't see him moving. Obviously you don't know that Lind's been shifted to center in Utica and, according to many sources, the transition's been seamless and he's excelled while there. Hamonic's better with Hughes? Have you seen Miller and Hughes play together somewhere that we haven't? But if it makes you feel a little better: Rathbone Schneider Schmidt Woo Miller Myers Juolevi You know what? That looks even better. A solid, balanced defense that brings a full 200 ft game and brings the edge a defense needs.

Personally, I don't think Edmonton does it.

Time to pass the torch

Elias Pettersson to the Rangers for K'Andre Miller, Braden Schneider, and a 2nd rounder Trading Petey would hurt but to get something good, one has to give up something good. It would also eliminate one big ticket item, giving us some cap relief to add more. NY moved up in the 2017 draft to get Petey. Unfortunately for them, JB scooped him up first. They have superstar caliber wingers, Petey gives them a superstar center to solidify their top-six. Some might say Petey's worth more but getting 2 young defenders from 1 team is a big ask. We get a solid, young defensive blueliner to match up with Hughes,,a gritty defender with good scoring ability to develop, and a high pick that JB can work his magic with. Brandon Sutter 2.5 retained, 2nd rnd pick to Edmonton for Jujhar Khaira With money retained, Sutter becomes a viable, depth center for Edmonton. The fact that Sutter is, more than likely, a rental while we get a player that's still under RFA status makes the 2nd round pick a controllable asset for them. We get some, much needed, real grit in our bottom six and we all know the love we have for hometown boys. Hoagy Miller Flow Pearson Horvat Podz Khaira Lind Virtanen Motte Beagle Macewen Roussel Huggy Miller Rathbone Schneider Schmidt Myers Juolevi Demko Dipietro Overall, a more solid, balanced line up.

5 prospects the Canucks could select in the first round of the 2021 draft

How's bpa judged in any year? Petey wasn't considered bpa when he was picked but, obviously, he was Vancouver Brass' bpa (thankfully). What a cdcer may think is bpa will rarely, if ever, match up with what we think. -
Great signing for both sides. I believe he's going to out perform that deal in a big way.

There is one kid that really intrigues me in this draft. Prokhor Poltapov. C/RW He has the three, on ice, attributes that make for a great player. Compete, skill, and speed. At 5'10, his stature is not very imposing but, common opinion is that he is the most aggressive player in this draft. He is fearless. Most scouts have him going in the second round but some have him in the late first round. This is mostly due to the fact that, although he's aggressive, it's not consistent. He sometimes choses a more conservative, defensive approach when he should be taking a more aggressive stance, attacking the puck. This being said, however, he is the leading scorer on his team. It may take some time (3-4 years) but, with proper, gradual, patient development, Poltapov could be a steal. I really feel this is a kid to keep an eye on.

[Discussion] Offseason changes
komodo0921 replied to Doogie's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Disagree 100% on your assessment of Green. A coach can only explain to his players what he expects out of them and show them in practices how he wants it done. He sets game plans and prepares his team as best he can for that plan. It's up to the players themselves to absorb and learn the information presented to them and to execute it. The coach cannot force them to do what they need to in order to succeed. It is not Green's fault that Virtanen shows up to camp year after year out of shape, It is not Green's fault that Gaudette can't put glorious chances in the net because of lack of shot accuracy. The players themselves have to work 365 days a year at their craft. It's why they get payed millions of dollars to play the sport. If players refuse to put in the work then it is they who have to be gone. I agree 100% on your assessment of JB. The make-up of this team lies squarely on the shoulders of JB. We are where we are because of what JB has drafted and assembled through free agency. There is little doubt that he's drafted well and, yes, he's had great success at the event but, it is also a fact that he's displayed a lack of good judgement when it comes to free agency. Too much money and term has been handed out to veteren players who haven't provided an adequate return. Eriksson, Myers, Roussel, Beagle, Sutter, Ferland, Edler are all performing below their paychecks with Ferland not even playing for the foreseeable future, if ever again. Losing a player like Toffoli due to indecisiveness is inexcusable. This is the very definition of poor management. Not getting value for money being spent and losing good players for stupid reasons. Unfortunately, this has, by association, been put on Green's shoulders too which, I think, is unfair. We need a GM who can make concrete decisions without so much hesitation and knows how to get good value when handing out free agent contracts. Your above lineup questions should serve as further example of JB's lack of effectiveness. Six years at the helm should have better results and less open roster spots one would thin. Bottom line, JB needs to go. Hockey is a game of three attributes. Compete, skill and speed. The team with the best balance of all three is going to win. We have plenty of skill and speed but we sorely lack in the compete category which is where grit, character, sacrifice, playing a complete game, and a will to better one's self lie. Players like Horvat, Petey, Boeser, Miller, Motte, Hoglander, and Juolevi have all worked hard to get themselves to where they are while Virtanen, Gaudette, Macewen, Beagle, Roussel, Edler, Myers, Sutter, Schmidt, and, to some extent, Hughes have become liabilities. That's far too many players on the negative side of the scale. It needs to be addressed and until it is, we will remain a team in limbo. Unfortunately, I have little to no hope that any changes I want to happen in the near future will. These would involve firing JB and using, at least, one of our star players to address our woeful defense and bottom six to better balance our team. -
(Proposal) Blow it up at the deadline
komodo0921 replied to billabong's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
This isn't a blowup move. Here's a blowup move: Elias Patterson, Adam Gaudet, Lukas Jasek to Detroit for Moritz Seider and Tyler Bertuzzi. Re-sign Pearson and Hughes. Bring up Lind and Rathbone (both look very close to ready). Hoary Miller Bowser Pearson Horvat Podkolzin Bert Lind Macedon Hughes Seider Rathbone Woo Tryamkin Myers Juolevi Demo Dipietro -
I'm stoked too. Podz is ready now. It's painful knowing this, yet having to wait.

Yes, we have size but, we have none with the grit and willingness to protect his fellow players that O Rourke provides. It's the main reason I want him. I am far from sold on Hughes being the blueline godsend that most seem to be heralding him as. Yes, he's young and yes, he's been saying all the right things as far as addressing his defensive deficiencies but, these are deficiencies he should've been working on from day one and he will never be a physical force and will always be a target of opposition. I must also express my desire for a more traditional, sizey, meaner defense with greater grit and defensive capabilities. Yes, providing offense is necessary but, it doesn't have to be of superstar quality, unless, such a player also has good defensive instincts as well but, those are called first over all picks and rarely become available unless they are unhappy or age catches up with them. I'm seeing a Tanev type with much more toughness. Hughes O Rourke Rathbone Woo Tryamkin Myers

Gaudette, Juolevi? Gotta remember, this is taking a chance. O Rourke is showing promise but, he's, at least, a couple seasons away, IF, he even develops into an NHLer. They have needs at both positions. This gives them one at each position. We're giving up two NHLers, one of which may, simply, need to be given a more offensive role in Gaudette (which is what I believe). Gaudette is also going to be affordable on his next deal as he's yet to, fully, realize his potential. One must also admit, this has been a strange year for a lot of players. Everyone has had a diffrent reaction to the circumstances under which they've played; Gaudette is no different. Juolevi is NHL ready now. He may not be an offensively gifted defender but, he is proving to be a good (too early to say great) defensive player. In my estimation, this would be an overpayment but shows how badly, I think, we need to address this part of our team game.
-
So add to the deal. What else do you think it would take?
-
I would like that too but, they do seem to be really high on this guy and may not be willing to part with him at all.
-
Minnesota needs centers, we need defensive help. Adam Gaudette for Ryan O Rourke Gaudette needs a reboot and isn't a center I see as a depth center. He's got a lot of skill but needs to refine it and could turn into a pretty good #2 if can improve his game. Ryan O Rourke is a defender in the truest sense. He's not going to be a prolific offensive player. His value is in the defensive zone and in his physical, pugilistic game. At this point he's still a couple seasons away but there's little doubt having a guy like this as Hughes' partner would bring great value, IF, he realizes his potential. Both teams take a chance, both teams get a player at a position they need but, for different reasons.

[Discussion] Realistic Value of Quinn Hughes
komodo0921 replied to Warhippy's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
This is my knock on him too. I'm a fan of a bigger, reliable, physical defense. Of course offensive production has to be there but, if I get a big, physical defender who takes care of his own end and can put up 30 points every season, I'm a pretty happy guy; especially if we had 2 or 3 of them on our blue line. I'm always on the lookout for the old-school throwbacks in drafts. They're becoming rarer and more valuable. It's why I look at guys like Ryan O Rourke in Minnesota's system, Moritz Seider in Detroit (who I really wanted that year), and Braden Schneider last year. I know the majority will disagree with me and will roast me for this but, I wouldn't mind seeing any one of these guys as part of a deal in any Quinn Hughes scenario. How about Quinn Hughes to New York for Braeden Schneider and K'Andre Miller. Yes, they're giving up two defenders for one but, offensively, Hughes outdoes them both and is the type of defender that should be a big attraction in The Big Apple. They get an offensive defender to put with Trouba which should help him the struggling dman, offensively. We get two bigger, more reliable defenders who, I see, topping out at that 30 point plateau and may, one day, be a great pairing. This opens the door for Jack Rathbone (another lefty) to join the team as a smaller defender. He brings small man grit and has a a lot of offensive upside. -
I remember wanting JB to try offer-sheeting this guy. That was before finding out what kind of dirtbag he is. No way in hell JB touches this situation. Just sucks that a situation arises where we could dump a big contract and it has to be an ass like this that comes available. Canuck luck all the way.
