This was the first game where doubt started to creep in as to whether has the determination it takes to go deep in the playoffs. Boeser has 4 assists (all of which were in the first two games) but he needs to start putting pucks in the net himself. Horvat needs to get back to the being machine he was in the first two games. With Boeser covering for Toffoli on Petey's RW, TG really needs to find another combination that works with Pearson and Horvat. The team, as a whole, needs to get back to grinding and punishing the Blues. In the first two games the Canucks were hitting everyone who went near the puck. They were pushing the pace. In the last two games, they've gotten away from that game. I saw many opportunities to lay the body passed on. Too many fly by's and way too much chasing the play. The hole left by Myers is looming large at this point but our defense must find a way to compensate. Someone else has to step up. Who's it going to be? TG needs to find answers to these issues or we'll be discussing next season sooner then we want.

It is definitely of the utmost importance that he comes to life if they want to see the next round.

Really felt like they'd lost some of their edge last night. Did losing Myers have a little to do with that? I must say though, Fantenberg filled in admirably. He was really noticeable. Hoping last night woke them up and they get back to the heavy, relentless, high pressure game that won them the first two contests.. That being said, I doubt anyone thought we were going to sweep them and losing games was going to be inevitable. Lets get back to winning.

Bo looks to be a man on a mission. He's looking every bit the captain we'd hoped he'd be.

This kid is going to be a beast for us. Boeser Podkolzin Virtanen Macewen This is going to be a very potent right side.

First off, I believe, much like Moritz Seider last draft, Schneider will be taken earlier then projected. Many scout sites have him going in the top 15. Gritty, sandpaper players are getting tougher to find. The fact that he's a right hand dman which seems to be getting equally rare, only ups his value. Many think his offensive game has another level yet and he has untapped talents that could make him the steal of the draft. As always, the price tag is going to be high and may be more then we can afford at this time. Any team owning a top 15 pick is going to want a guaranteed winner. Who do we have that fits that category? Petey, Hughes, Boeser, Miller, Horvat. The next tear would be Virtanen, Gaudette, Demko, Stetcher, Macewen, Podkolzin, Hoglander, maybe Tryamkin. A lot of question marks there. We have all of our picks next season available but, after just completing the Miller trade with this years first rounder; Do we want to go down that road again? Another factor that's beginning to emerge is this teams current success. Do we want to upset the chemistry this team is building by taking away a key piece? My answer is,, as much as I want this guy, I'm not willing to pay the price it would take to get a top 15 pick. I'm not willing to deal any of Petey, Hughes, Boeser, Miller, or Horvat, one of which, I believe, would be the price tag. So I have to say no.

OTT & TML ..(Big Proposal)
komodo0921 replied to Nuxfanabroad's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
There's little doubt TO needs to shake things up but, I think moving Marner's a bit of a reach. I think it would more likely be Nylander or Kapinen that get moved. They definitely need to revamp their d a bit. -
I read a post that said Petey didn't have to be protected. Others say he does. The one reason I can see him not requiring protection is because he will be an rfa and, therefore isn't under contract for the following season. He's, technically, not Vancouver property until he re-signs.
-
Thanks. Takes a bit more sting out of the expansion draft.
-
Don't know if I missed a part of this conversation but, Myers has an NMC. He has to be protected.
-
Obviously this thread assumes he's available.
-
Is he tradeable after an offer sheets been signed?
-
And give up a first and third? Can't see that happening. That's why I put the cap hit there. We have a young up and coming team that's not that far away from contention. This core should be together for a long time. These are factors that would look favorable in signing an offer sheet.

WCQF: (4) St. Louis Blues vs. (5) Vancouver Canucks
komodo0921 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Vancouver showed they can beat this team during the regular season. They also showed there's a lot more depth here then most thought. We have the Marky factor St. Louis didn't look unbeatable during their series against Dallas. Picking Vancouver in 7. -
Other moves may be necessary (moving Virtanen, Sutter as a pair?) for this to be more realistic but didn't want to go too far off topic which was acquiring Cernak.

Paying Tanev 4.5 mil per season seems to be proper value to many CDCers.. It would seem 4.2 mil for a more physical defensive specialist that may max out at 15 points, is fair.

This proposal mainly stems from my belief that we now have two premiere defenders who will be providing offense in great amounts in Hughes and Rathbone. With big offense comes big paydays and I have little doubt that Rathbone could be in a high cap bracket. I am also predicting Ferland will be on the LTIR list or will be done for good (unfortunately), saving us his cap space. We have Tanev working well with Hughes and now need a right side match for Rathbone. Enter Erik Cernak. A physical defensive specialist who has really come into his own with the Bolts. The Lightning, like the Canucks, have cap problems coming. Both Sergachev and Cirelli will be needing raises, Vasilevsky's 9.5 million dollar contract kicks in, and they will have a whole host of ufa spots to fill. According to capfriendly, Tampa will have just over 5.3 million in capspace this year leaving them in a dire situation. Many have us in the same boat but I contend that some of our current rfa's may be of less importance then theirs. I am quite confident that his ceiling will be 10-20 points and will be most valued as the physical, defensive, complimentary defender. Him getting 15-20 points would be considered a bonus. 4 x 4.2 Compensation would be our 2021 2nd round pick. I think we get great value here. This contract would be very desirable by Cernak's camp as it takes him to ufa eligibility without eating any of his ufa years. This contract could also be too rich for Tampa to match for a complimentary dman when they have bigger fish to fry in Sergachev and Cirelli. Signing Cernak would create a problem for us in that we also have cap issues but to this I simply say, release Stetcher who many have valued at around the 4 mil mark anyway. I'm replacing a little more speed and offense in Stetcher for more size and physicality in Cernak. I see their defensive play as a wash. Some will criticize walking him into free agency but, that's 4 yrs away. Our situation will look a lot different then. The two big questions are: Is he worth it? Can this offer pry him away from Tampa? Hughes Tanev Rathbone Cernak Juolevi/Tryamkin Myers
-
Is his cap hit relieved if he retires?
-
If both are interested, I simply look at who's willing to take the bigger cap dump. As far as the return is concerned, I'd rather take a mid-round pick as compensation. Demko, Eriksson/Sutter for 4th/5th round pick
-
I firmly believe he will be in training camp next season.

Seriously; Is there anything this kid can't do? Everyone had the feeling he was going to be good but, I didn't think he'd be controlling games like this this early in his career. Mr. Norris, meet Quinn Hughes.

[Proposal] Trading Virtanen
komodo0921 replied to RetroCanuck's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I'd like to start by saying that I love the potential of Jake Virtanen. When he's on point, he's a force. Until the unfortunate end to the season in March, Jake was threatening to eclipse 40 pnts, and his possession metrics were good. He really looked to be emerging into the power forward we all hoped he'd be. The strange circumstances surrounding his absence from the ice are concerning, considering there's been no explanation offered for it. Is it injury? Is it personal? Is it fitness? We simply haven't been given any info on why he's not there but, based on what I saw up to March, I'm very wary of dealing him now. Although I don't want to see him dealt now, I don't mean to imply that he shouldn't be dealt at a later time. We really need som youthful bite in our line up. Enter Vasily Podkolzin who's said to be a "bulldog" type player with a high intensity level. He's more the third line winger we need. I think it more fair Virtanen get another short term deal to see if he is can keep building on his game and look at dealing him at the end of next season. -
Actually don't mind most of this. I do think Ferland really showed he's truly back and can handle more minutes but I'd like to see him on Petey's wing for, at least, a few shifts to start the game. Minnesota really played Petey aggressively (which we all knew was coming). Having the presence of Ferland by his side should provide a bit of a deterrent. If not Ferland needs to set a precedence for taking liberties on Petey and may have to take a penalty or two to back it. It is imperative that Vancouver find ways to buy Petey space to work with. Horvat needs to be unleashed offensively and used much, much less in defensive situations. Sutter does not necessarily have to be moved up but could be used in defensive faceoffs, I like Gaudette's offensive upside more so then Sutter's, so I like Gaud at 3 C better. Using Sutter as a defensive faceoff specialist frees up Bo for full on offense. I thought Motte was really noticeable and proved he could handle defensive assignments so he stays in. Thought OJ looked pretty good in the warm up game. Why not see what he can do under meaningful circumstances. At least to start the game: Ferland Petey Boeser Miller Horvat Toffoli Pearson Gaudette Macewen Motte Beagle Sutter Hughes Myers Edler Stetcher OJ Tanev Fantenberg As said above, if this doesn't provide positive results in the form of more chances and goals then it's not difficult to return the lineup to resemble one a little more familiar to us but, TG needs to find a way to spark this team.
