His offensive abilities have never been a question mark. It's his unwillingness to hustle back to defend that's plagued him. He looked good last night though. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Seeing this draft as the last top lottery draft for us before it starts to come together on the ice. It's only preseason but watching the skill Pettersson and Dahlen in last nights game really gave us a glimpse of a bright future that's not far away. While Jack Hughes would be an incredible piece of good fortune, reality says it's highly unlikely. A more realistic hope and need is one more top four defender, preferably one that is close to being ready and is a right hand shot. I wouldn't be opposed to trading the pick to get a young defenseman with these qualities. Right now I have our top four of the near future as: Hughes. Tanev Juolevi. ? I'd love to pencil in Woo but, much like Tanev, his frequent run in with injury has me a bit worried. JB has gathered a wealth of forward talent. Hughes was a great bit of luck but he needs to gather the same blueline depth that he has in the forward group.

A lot of talk in this thread about players other than Gaudette. Anybody know how Gaudette's looking so far?

Have to disagree on Baertschi assessment. The different playing styles is playing a key part in why that line was so successful up until injuries took it's toll on it. While Boeser was establishing his bar, both Bo and Sven were busy raising theirs. This is directly because their playing styles complimented each other's. I suspect this line will stay together and, once again, see all three eclipse previous stat totals. My only fear is injury, once again, derailing success. I predicted in another thread that, if this line stays together and all three stay healthy, it would achieve the 170 point mark and I stick to it.

I'm seeing this as Hutton's "do or die" season. We all know Hutton is capable of putting up offensive numbers. Unfortunately, last season was a derailment of sorts for him. I really liked the start of his season. His first twenty games, although not offensively productive, showed he could be a solid defensive defender. Unfortunately, as the season went on, he couldn't maintain his reliability (I believe due to conditioning) and earned him a one way trip into Greene's doghouse. I've not seen Ben yet, so can't testify to his shape, but everything I've heard so far, says he's in the shape of his life. For me, a successful season for Ben Hutton is, first, making the team, and then eclipsing the 25 point threshold while being a defensively responsible blueliner. I know the plus/minus stat is weak, but it is one of the few simple measuring aids we have to judge a players performance. There are so many stat categories used to evaluate a players performance that it just becomes too overwhelming and requires too much typing to explain. I use the plus/minus simply to show his positive/negative blueline impact players have on the team. I feel plus ten would be a good result for him.

Can't help think he may get a better chance as a RW.

All I can say about Dahlen is; Wow. He looks fantastic. If he performs during the preseason like he has at the tourney, he's going to make it virtually impossible to turn him away.
-
Sorry, missed that part.

I hope I don't have to mention Quinn Hughes in that conversation.

I think I can safely say that's what we all want. As for Juolevi, it all depends on his physical readiness. If he's 100% and shows well in the pre-season, there's no reason to think he won't earn a spot. If he's not at full readiness, I think he starts in Utica. I don't think he's there for long if he proves himself and our defense falters.
-
I'm dreaming big. 70 + point rookie season. Calder Trophy.
-
If we get anything close to Lumme out of Juolevi, our defense is going to be in great shape.
-
Tryamkin's return would put the finishing touch on, what should be, a revamped blueline. The timing would also be perfect as it would be right about when they're ready to start seeing playoff action again.
-
Thit is what we need in this lineup. Like Beagle, the price tag is a bit steep, but coming to a rebuild situation requires extra incentive. Glad to have him.
-
Yup, the price is steep, but that's to be expected when going from a champion to a build situation. Like the player, we're getting. Adds some much-needed veteran grind and championship experience. That experience will be greatly needed when we start getting back into the playoff picture.

Hughes was a great score but this guy brings much-needed physicality, in addition to some scoring punch, to our blueline. He matches well with any of our LHD. Love this pick.

I think he's been quoted as saying he'd like to be starting next season in Vancouver.

How about Tryamkin, Hughes? Be awesome watching the embrace after a goal. Be like watching a father hugging his son.

While I'm an advocate for the pipeline, I always respect what the people decide and vote for. I find it slimy and disgusting that our cowardly government will now use BC tax dollars to cover losses due to Kinder Morgan's refusal to follow BC's protocols for ensuring environmental safety. As an independent province with it's independent values, using BC money to feed another greedy, tactless American company that is not supported by the majority vote in BC, is simply another example of our government disrespecting our right to choose what happens in our backyard. It's been a long time since the last time I believed in anything the federal government has done, supposedly, for our country ( "our" being used lightly) as these doings, generally benefit other countries or the east side of our own and possess very little value to us. In this pipeline I, finally see something that brings great prosperity to BC. Unfortunatey, the need to cut corners and save money seem to be outweighing the need to satisfy BCer's fair concerns about environmental impact. As an independent person, I do not like foreigners trying to come into our home and telling us how we're going to operate. For this reason I am whole-heartedly against any decision to use our money for anything involving this pipeline until they comply with BC's wishes. Blessed will be the day when we have federal government that actually works for BC instead of finding new ways to take advantage of it. The problem comes in the form of our inability to do anything about it.

Tanev sacrifices himself to finish plays. It's who he is. It's not going to change. There are small players who were known for their toughness. Lest we forget Ty Domi, Brandon Prust, and our own beloved Rick Rypien. He just has to bulk up a bit and he'll be fine.
-
Imo, if that's the style that got him drafted, then he shouldn't change a thing. A good example of a player whose playing style is a direct factor in his injuries is Tanev. Do we want him to change his style? I don't think so, seeing as it's his style of play that makes him a great defender. If not for his willingness to sacrifice his body, Tanev is nowhere near as good as he is. The same thing can be said of Lockwood. If he's not the feisty player that he is; Does he even get drafted? I have to think the sandpaper he brings is part of the reason JB took him in the third round. The fact is, combative players are prone to injuries. It's the way it's always been and it's the way it always will be. It is also a fact that if he gets his chance with the big club, it's a part of his game we will embrace and love.

I still don't think we've seen the best Bo yet. Many forget that, until injury stalled his season, he was on pace to smash previous highs in points, His defensive numbers were vastly improved, and he was showing dominance in the faceoff dot. I think a lot of fans underestimate just how important Bo has become to this team. At no time was that importance more demonstrated than when he went down with that injury in December. It was no coincidence that it coincided with them dropping out of playoff contention. They looked like a different team without him. Both Baertschi and Boeser seemed to lose some of their potency and the life seemed to get sucked out of the team. I'm looking for him to eclipse 60 points next season and for the line of Baertschi, Horvat, and Boeser to rip it up next year. Ladies and gentleman, say hello to our next captain.

That's the difference between a fan and a bandwagoner. A bandwagoner only shows up when things are good. A fan is there, no matter what. I'm in attendance win or lose. I watch games to the end, even when down 7-0 with 10 minutes left in the third. I'm always interested to hear other ideas and opinions for and about the team. I offer my own ideas, some good (most bad) but I always wear the blue and green with pride and support them, always. I don't do it because I have to; I do it because I'm a true fan of the Canucks and that's what a fan does.

I'm hoping not. We would be so far ahead in our rebuild if this guy can put it together. His offensive abilities have never been in question, it's always been his unwillingness to play the defensive zone. It's the thing that made me wonder why JB traded for him. JB's always preached two-way play. This guy had none of it. It was great to see him finally getting it at the end of the season. I hope he continues it into next season.

That was a really good read. I honestly think AG is going to be another fantastic story in the near future. With what he's developed, not just in his skills but in his mind as well, it's hard to see this kid not having a fine NHL career. I've said it before; I believe this kid's going to show a lot better than a third-line depth player. I'm so excited for next season. I get a bit torqued when I hear people from other NHL markets say we're not able to accept a rebuild. I hear and see nothing but excitement for it and a lot saying, "It's about time." I'm excited to see a new core (led by Bo) emerge and come into their own.
