He was putting up points in Utica before his last injury. They got him for offense. I too thought he looked a bit vulnerable defensively in the pre-season. We've been told by every coach around that it's usually easier to learn defensive skills than offensive ones. Whether he is at the NHL level can only be known for sure by trying him out a bit. I agree that we don't want a sub-standard defender on the D.

I don't know. He has to know that he'd be on the big team now loving the big life if it weren't for injuries. He and Hughes (along with Myers and Tanev) look fantastic for the next few years. And if Woo keeps progressing, then they have what they need. Fantenberg was good last game, surprisingly good, which suggests that the team is pretty good at getting decent D to add to the D core. What I'm saying is that Juolevi has to be seeing good stuff that he can't wait to be part of. He will also have a pretty realistic sense of how good he is, how much ice time he can expect when he does come up, even whether he is 2nd pp unit material (or even first.)

[GDT] Canucks vs Oilers, 7PM PST December 1, 2019 -- B2B Part 2 Edition

Best game by Eriksson this year and maybe last year too. But those penalties... If he were Goldobin's age and had the same upside it would be easy to look past the penalties and stick with him. But he's not a young guy with upside, just an old guy paid 5 million more a year than he deserves. I'm not sure what they are going to do with LE. I don't understand why he isn't in Utica. On the other hand, if he plays as well as he did tonight... not sure why they haven't played him more up to this point. -

Yes, and if anyone had hit him they'd have gotten a penalty. Not right. -

And I don't think they have missed him in this last little while. Fantenberg skates better and Hughes gets more ice time. My concern is with Benn: he has been pretty bad a lot of these last 10 games. -

The truth is: Horvat is really having a nice run right now. He's carried his line on his back 3 or 4 of the last 5 games. -

Otherwise, pretty similar games, you're right. And a couple more bad penalties -

They don't seem to have the ability to play consistently with the style that wins for them. Either it's a defensive shell or a dump and chase, when they stop playing their best way. Coaching maybe, not sure. -

He's trying. In fact, trying too hard: those penalties. On the other hand, if he hadn't taken those penalties I think there'd be no doubt that he's played well enough to stay in the lineup for a while. -

Saw Eriksson hitting and mucking... thought I'd been wrong about him... had to apologize... then realized I'd mis-read the numbers: it was 71 not 21 I was seeing. -

I haven't heard from him. Trolled him earlier... no response. Scotch... I feel like I should know about that. -

In international soccer they seem to have a way to rid themselves of big players who don't perform. (Eriksson). I think that they have some kind of equivalence to our signing bonuses, which they are incredibly generous with, but their contracts seem to be shorter. I will go check on this. There are no Eriksson equivalents I have seen in soccer. -

Oh, it's on now. A guy with no points, no hits and no effect on the game, except for penalties? I've never seen anything like this, in any sport I can think of. I follow the Bundesliga closely, used to play baseball, and we all watch pro hockey. Never seen a player like Eriksson who is basically a walking dead player. Not in terms of effort, but ability. He just doesn't have it. Can't keep up. Two years ago he kept up. Sometimes last year. But this year? Completely out of his depth. We have a lot of players who need more ice time or opportunity... to me... it's a mystery that he is on this team at all. Alf usually refers me to the owner at this point... I'm beginning to wonder. -

Graovac looks good enough tbh. During the Washington game I heard the Washington announcers say that "Graovac made the team out of training camp: speed and physicality with the ability to shoot." I guess they lost him on the way somewhere. But really I think he is good enough to be on the team regular. -

Horvat is an amazing player though. Very easy to take for granted. Never gets injured. Always seems to get points. Can play both ways well. Not Pettersson, not McDavid or Draisaitl, let alone MacKinnon. I just hope he gets a good long career, a successor to Bergeron in some ways. -

Play well. That's what he did to deserve it. Obviously, not fair. And win a thousand faceoffs, yes, and still finish in the top 3 or 4 in scoring. And not get injured. And make less money than Eriksson. -

I think the core of this team (plus Podkolzin and Woo) is capable of winning a cup. Maybe. But tonight's game makes me wonder if we are not further than we have been in decades... I see your point. Tough game to witness. -

Agreed. But this could be as soon as 2 weeks from now. And our memories of this debacle will still be fresh. I think, I hope, that Green is relieved of his duties in favour of someone who is better suited to coaching a big team. -

Tanev is hit with a lot of pucks. Edler is fading into the zone flailing at attackers. These guys have bad habits from the days the Canucks sucked. They are used to defending in situations where they are under siege; where the team lost a lot of games. No longer is the case. -

I wish they would look at videos of the better teams: they harass, they don't concede the zone. Maybe on a better structured team Edler would shine. I have to say: after this game, this whole way of dealing with a 3 goal lead has to change.
