Best money ever spent. Ferland but actually playing lol.

Playoffs... lol, who would have thought 18 months ago. But yes, he'll be great in the playoffs. And he'll play in them: guy hardly ever gets injured. And he is still improving. I'm curious: what do you think he makes for money this upcoming year? 4 million? 3.5?
-
This year is a breakout one for Jake. Nothing like his previous years. He is making plays -- real passes that lead to goals now -- all while doing decent defensive work. He even plays the point in powerplays now. The fact that he can agitate and defend mates as well as play a generally more heavy game than half the team, means that this guy is entering a new rank/status on the team. The team is pretty deep in the top 6 players you have on the ice: Marky in goal, Hughes on D along with who you think is the second best (Tanev for defense, Edler or Myers for offense? Stecher for both?); Pettersson, Horvat and Miller are your best forwards now, with Boeser slightly better on offense than Horvat, maybe, maybe not. This is pretty good forward depth. Which brings us to Jake. He has to be the next best forward after Horvat, Boeser, Miller and Pettersson. And he is improving, defining his game. I see him able to come into Miller's range, in some ways he is almost there now. If his upward swing is maintained, or even slightly improved, he begins to justify being a top 10 pick. A powerforward who (a) can score/set up plays; (b) hit like a truck, usually cleanly; (c) draw penalties and agitate (he is already better than Roussel at this) (d) cause turnovers on his own; and (e) evolve an interesting power play game. He has to be the Canucks 7th best player, all positions included perhaps 6th because we don't have a D to equal Hughes at the moment. He has been slow to develop into this player, but this player is now in the top 7 on the team, maybe 6. Doesn't mean he plays the top power play, doesn't mean he is on the "top" line (whatever that is right now) but he is that good and that important right now and going forward. Huge year for him. Those two assists agains San Jose were an announcement to the league that he is now a genuine top 6 forward and possibly a top 6 player in general at least on this team which has only 1 world class D man. The combination of what he can do solo, together with what he is developing on powerplays and with the better players (Pearson and Miller, Pettersson too) is making him a completely different player on this team than he was last year, let alone 2 years ago.

Is this San Jose? Or did they replace the team before the game with some minor leaguers? Old, slow, confused... cannot possibly be the same team that played the Canucks earlier this year. Pevelkski, Couture... not here, but still. Hertl, Meier, Burns, Karlsson… this guys aren't 40, and they don't look that tired, per se. Amazing. Our team is basically out-skating them everywhere and at almost every position.

Edler… ahh... awful, again? Both goals on him. Bring up Chatfield of Juolevi or whoever is available. (Not Benn, lol) -

Lemaire. He was bad for hockey. Basketball dealt with zone defenses more than once; hockey seems to tolerate this kind of stuff too much. -

You think about how we bottomed out here... always assuming a future star would be drafted. These guys in MN have NO STARS and no picks either. Pettersson and Hughes let us play exciting hockey. Minnesota could have gotten picks like that. Yes, very hard to be a fan there. -

Similar to New Jersey, but sleepier. -
You've reminded me how much the rules really matter. The point about real-time replays is so valuable. If and when they get to review of penalties it will really matter then. In track and field they have started to return to a more realistic sense of measurement. Athletes actually "tie" now in sprints. I think it is a good idea.

I've thought the same about sticks. No telling what kind of high-tech weirdness will be available in the future, and with the tolerance with things that there is now... no way they can stop this. Sticks that can automatically target a net, that can provide the propulsion of a bow, that can change shape slightly when receiving a pass? MLB has kept the same dimensions for the field too, same kind of base bags. The only evolution has been in the gloves and maybe the shoes too. Even the ball is carefully measured and thought about. Other sports are pretty strict too about their equipment. My wife says that hockey is impressive because it requires so many skills: to start with, you have to be able to skate, just to get to the rest of the game! And it is unusual in using a tool (stick) -- unlike Basketball, Soccer, etc. The problem is that it has so many ways it can adapt those tools. Skates, shot blocking aids, body armour, etc. I'm not sure myself where it should be fixed and where it should be allowed to evolve. E.g., hockey would be higher scoring without so much shot blocking -- standardize the equipment so that there is no special equipment to protect players blocking shots and I think there would be less of it lol.

Well put. And those offside video replays... hard to put up with that. Should be a rule: either the NHL deals with offside in 6 seconds or an appealing team has to. Something. A lot of the craziness in officiating is due to crazy rules, half of which are there because they want a visually pleasing game that increases scoring. Wait until China produces a 7 foot 4 inch goalie that literally fills every space in the net. End of scoring. They have to deal with net size and goalie equipment in my opinion. A bigger ice surface should help with scoring if the nets are enlarged -- even 18 inches wider would help. They should also look at much bigger arenas that have the potential to get 50 thousand fans in. Would allow lower ticket prices and higher revenues. Some of the European football clubs sell out at 75,000 fans every game. Lets them sell tickets for 15 bucks lol. And pay players 40 million a year.

Well put. The sticks being knocked out of players' hands was memorable because in fact we call the same stuff in the NHL. You can board a guy to the point of a concussion, but you shouldn't lift his stick when he doesn't have the puck. I think they should deal with the BIG stuff (boarding, reckless play, headshots, players in the crease) before getting to the tiny details like knocking a guy's stick a bit. Re: Canadian players and making the NHL. That Russian team was very good. The Canadian team was very young. Together that suggests there are some very good Canadian players who will play major roles in the NHL. I suspect that at least 7 of them will be household names in 3 years. Probably 10 of them make the NHL, maybe more. A lot of good skaters.
-
No, you're right. We're neither in need of new young talent immediately, nor are we likely to be in a great place to pay for them when their entry level contracts would end... It will be a challenge to pay for EP, Hughes, Markstrom and Virtanen next year. (Time to bribe somebody... lol. I'm think LE and the NHL for Luongo's mess.)
-
We lose 1 first rounder... probably next year? But we still have this year's though? Canada always has a couple of fast forwards and 2 or 3 first class D, wish we could find a way to get one. Hofer was good too, but not necessarily in the market for a goalie right now. We got Woo a while back... that's something I guess.

If LE were 21 and a budding millennial Doug Jarvis, I'd be happy with the guy, and loving his play. A good 13th guy. But when Ferland and Sutter come back or Lind gets a chance to come up here? At his best, he probably still doesn't make the team out of training camp, and he certainly isn't going to be playing in place of a healthy Ferland or Sutter. We're just so used to him looking so bad, that we think he's better than he is when he doesn't look too out of place. He should have had at least one goal this last period, with the way his mates are creating chances. The best he can do for this team is leave the team in May or June and not come back. Virtanen needs 3 million, EP needs 7 to 9, Hughes 5.5 to 7 million. And Markstrom -- wouldn't it be something to be unable to find money for this guy, when LE is eating up Cap space. -

We were all pretty nervous about the previous two games. The team had not been great leading up to those games as we all well remember. Now they are playing better, the pp in particular is starting to look good again. Even the pk was NHL level. So, contrarian logic would suggest they lose this one, probably in OT. But, I think the Oilers goaltending is bad right now, and ours is not, so... We win 5-3 in regular time. Refs don't blow too many calls, Edler plays well. (Assuming he does play.) Jake prompts more shotgun heroics with his fans. (He now has fans lol.) Jake with 2 goals, 1 assist and thumps Nurse.
